To bring my kids to my hairdresser appointment

cadburyegg · 22/09/2024 16:35

I really need my hair cut, but the only spot my hairdresser had was a cancellation on a Saturday in a couple of weeks time. Usually I schedule appointments for when my kids are at their dad's, but this appointment falls on my weekend. My mum would usually babysit but can't on this occasion.

I'd be in there for about an hour for a wash, cut and blow dry. Do you think it's acceptable to bring my kids - age 9 and 6 - along? They would bring either tablets (with headphones) and books etc to keep them occupied, no noisy toys. They are perfectly capable of sitting still for that long and wouldn't be running around.

Were the stylists happy to chat to a child? Perhaps thet wanted to concentrate on their work?.

Yes they all knew my daughter - she didn’t chat while they were with clients. I would have told her not to if she did.

I think it's fine at those ages. Mine would just sit & play on the tablet. I was at the dentist yesterday & because we were all being seen 1 after the other, we were there for about 4 hrs, so a lot of waiting around. The kids were fine & didn't disturb anyone. It's Saturday so there will probably be kids in the salon anyway getting haircuts.

The children were there for dental appointments, not waiting for mum to get her hair done. It's different.
Although I do wonder why it took 4 hours, half the dentist's day? Were they all getting work done?

Starlightstarbright3 · 22/09/2024 18:44

I have done it with D’s .. he was around 6 . I was working 5 days a week . He sat there with his Ds game console .. I checked first - they were fine with it .

Viviennemary · 22/09/2024 18:46

Not really. Some hairdressers do not allow this because of Health and Safety

Cowboycorgi · 22/09/2024 18:58

@LochKatrine I get that it's different, but my point was they were waiting around a fair while unattended, similar ages, and they were fine. Yeah, we all got some work done, a crown, a couple fillings, some cleaning, and x rays between us. Twas a fun day out!

Rather you than me!

Not unless you've asked and been given the ok. Who's going to watch them when your head is in the sink or something?

Summertimer · 22/09/2024 19:17

I think it’s fine if there are enough seats for them?

You are in the US though and I’m in the UK so the social conventions might be different

Just ask the hairdresser. Mine has a small lounge area with about 4 seats. I have sat there while colour takes in the past. It wouldn’t bother me if your children were quietly sitting there.

If hairdresser agrees , make sure they have a drink and snack and a screen and show them where the wc is before you get started. Do not expect staff to manage them.

Can children not last without a drink and snack for just one hour?

Is the OP in the US?

I assumed because it says ‘bring’ not ‘take’ kids to the hairdresser, but I’m not sure now

Oh, right. Don't they call it "a beauty salon"?

Mountainpika · 22/09/2024 19:41

Back in the early 50s, hairdressers had individual cubicles. I'd go with Mum while she had her hair done - a longish session - and would sit quite happily on the floor in the corner with books, crayons etc.. Sometimes Dad would come and pick me up (his work was flexible) so we'd do something till Mum was ready.
When my boys were babies, I took them and they sat on my lap while I had a trim. Got them used to the idea of having haircuts.

No, not in NYC where we lived

DuskandDawn · 22/09/2024 19:43

Of course you can!!!! Single parent, my kids always came with me.

Oh, right.
Not that it matters much!

Beezknees · 22/09/2024 19:54

I think it's fine at those ages, they're not toddlers who are going to be running around causing a nuisance. I wouldn't care at all, I don't expect a hairdressers to necessarily be a child free space, it's not a nightclub!

Beautiful3 · 22/09/2024 20:04

No I.wouldnt. you'd have to call.up the salon and ask if it's okay. They might not have the space for them,.or not want the receptionist to be responsible for them,.while you're getting your hair done. I would.personally change your appointment to.when they're in school.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 22/09/2024 20:35

Could you get their hair done at the same time?

TeaOrCoffeeOrHotChocolate · 22/09/2024 22:40

It wouldn't be a problem at my hairdressers. My kids are well behaved (when out in public & occupied with devices) so no one would need to look after them (similar ages to yours).

joolsella · 23/09/2024 05:03

You're asking the wrong people

Call the salon

cuckooooooo · 23/09/2024 05:11

Ask the salon?

Edingril · 23/09/2024 05:17

No and no do not leave children in a car I can't believe that was even a suggestion

caringcarer · 23/09/2024 05:21

A 9 year old possibly if there is room which is unlikely on a Saturday morning but a 6 years old most definitely not.
