To think a partial refund should be offered under these circumstances?

I booked tickets for an event. They weren’t cheap and being totally honest here I did so because it’s literally taking place next to my house and a bouncy castle was involved. I knew DS(3) would be desperate to go on so booked it.

Of course the weather is now … interesting and the bouncy castle is cancelled. A chirpy email says not to worry, there are lots of other things to do but honestly none of them will interest DS much.

AIBU to think partially refunding would be fair in this situation?

@TimeForTeaAndG it’s just practical. It’s a fairly ummmm specific sort event and I don’t know if I can get the pushchair across the field even, it’s like a lake 😂

Yes fair enough @pinkdelight .

I'm trying to imagine what sort of event sells expensive tickets and only offers 4 things?

A special one Smile

So go and try to make the most of it.

It'll only be a 'bit of a flop' if people let the weather put them off, and that would be such a shame for the organisers.

If the locals don't support these things, they'll stop organising them eventually.

Either way, you might as well go along as it's so near to your home and you've got a ticket.

Who knows, your child might enjoy it afterall.

I was also thinking this.
Why would you spend £££££ on something that’s only offering 4 things, only one of which you are really interested in. Bit odd.
Definitely still go and make the most of it for an hour or 2.

agiftfromwinklesea · 22/09/2024 10:57

I’ve explained @Smartiepants79 . I spent £££ on it because it was right next to our house and I knew DS would want to join in. So i spent ££ on it because sometimes I do, I just like doing things that make my child happy.

I think you're being unreasonable here. You booked tickets for an outdoor event, it will always be weather dependent.

It's fair to say you're disappointed and annoyed, but the weather can't be changed.

The organisers will probably be losing a lot of their expected income due to the weather. I'm sure loads of people will have purchased tickets and now won't turn up and spend as anticipated. Why stick it to them even more and ask for some money off?

They are not responsible for the fact your 3yo will only want to do the bouncy castle. You made that booking with the knowledge you were only going for one aspect.

I'd still go and see if dc will get involved in the other activities. Dc may surprise you. Try to spin this into a positive rather than a negative. Your mindset and excitement may help get dc more involved and wanting to join in. Wellies and rain proofs on and have a great day.

agiftfromwinklesea · 22/09/2024 10:58

Oh I know I’m not annoyed or anything. I feel bad for the organisers! But it was a fair amount of money and it is a shame.

Still, it happens. A bit of rain would be fine but it’s been chucking down here all yesterday evening and night. So the field is like a bog!

OP posts:
YaCannyKickYaGrannyInTheShin · 22/09/2024 11:02

Well don't feel bad for the organisers.

Get your wellies on and go and support them!

agiftfromwinklesea · 22/09/2024 11:04

Like I have said, I am not sure I can. They’ve got my money either way, I don’t think we all need to get soaked and stuck in mud to make a point!

An expensive event with 4 things on offer? That's not special that's idiotic.

I think you’re wrong, the company they’ve hired the bouncy castle from most likely asked for payment up front and had a clause about unsuitable weather find being beyond their control.

That's unlikely, there is normally a 24 clause for bad weather (there has been all the times I've hired one for an event or at home, with multiple companies). They don't want a soaking wet castle and if it's too windy the bouncy castle won't be permitted be inflated.

This is from a website of a company I use regularly
What about the weather?
Most of our bouncy castles have built-in shower covers (not slides or some other inflatables), so even if a light shower is forecast, as soon as it stops raining, give the inflatable a quick dry with a towel and carry on bouncing! We also offer a free of charge cancellation option in the event of bad weather. If it is very wet or windy and you no longer want the inflatable that you have booked, you can cancel the booking by telephoning us by 6:00pm the day before the date of hire and you won’t have to pay a penny! For safety reasons, we cannot allow a hire to proceed if there are high winds or heavy rain on the day of hire.

Under consumer law, goods and services must be "as described", so say they advertised as a bouncy castle, mini farm, crafts and a punch and judy show for example. You could reasonably ask for a quarter of the entrance fee back.

JennyfromtheBlok · 22/09/2024 11:08

Im Intrigued as to this event!

I say definitely go. If it’s next to your house you don’t need a pushchair with a 3 yr old.

You may as well make the best of it

agiftfromwinklesea · 22/09/2024 11:15

I have a younger child sorry … I do need a pushchair for her.

I don't really understand an expensive event with only 4 things on offer? Perhaps if you were less vague about this event it might make it easier?

On the face of it, no you can't get a refund. If there are other things to do then it's not really the organisers fault you booked tickets for something you wouldn't enjoy the majority of

agiftfromwinklesea · 22/09/2024 11:23

Since I’ve said it’s right next to my house, surely you get why I might not want to be too precise?

OP posts:
Anewuser · 22/09/2024 11:26

If it’s ’right next to your house’, then either get little ones to walk or if the smaller one is a baby, then stick them in your sling or carry them.

Seems silly not to go because of a little rain. We’re about to go into autumn so surely you’re not planning on staying in for the next 6 months?

agiftfromwinklesea · 22/09/2024 11:28

Somewhere between the two. Too old to be stuck in a sling, too young to walk. (Well, not too young to walk but not able to yet.) I am playing it by ear. Out at the moment so will see how things look when we get back. It’s a shame to miss it but if no one’s going to enjoy themselves then there’s no point. I’m a big fan of getting out whatever the weather but full on thunderstorms and torrential rain is an exception I’ll make!

OP posts:
agiftfromwinklesea · 22/09/2024 11:29

We’ve got a yellow weather warning … there won’t be a yellow weather warning for six months!

I hate it when MN do this. A bit of damp and drizzle, absolutely, get your waterproofs on. Thunder and lightning and lashing rain and flooded fields - fuck that!

There are only 4 things (well, 3 now), so how long could you possibly be out in the bad weather anyway?

agiftfromwinklesea · 22/09/2024 11:32

One of them is live music, to give an idea; people do obviously tend to listen to that for a while. In the mellow September sunshine it would be glorious: I’m not sure it will be today.

OP posts:
YaCannyKickYaGrannyInTheShin · 22/09/2024 11:33

There's a yellow weather warning every five minutes with the Met Office lately!

It's one of my bugbears. They're so frequent, people seem to have stopped taking notice of them.

But all this is irrelevant anyway, as if the weather turns out to be as bad as predicted, it'll have to be cancelled.

agiftfromwinklesea · 22/09/2024 11:36

That may be true but it is still no less true that there is a difference between a damp, drizzly day and a thunderstorm!

It's a bit hard to advise when we know nothing about the event. What is the point of the event?
