to hate H&M self service

Omnium · 22/09/2024 09:53

Bought 3 things in H&M, and as there was only one till open and a queue, I used the self service machine.

Just went to wear the jumper now- and it's still got the fucking magnetic anti-theft thing clamped on it.

How can I get it off? I really don't want to traipse all the way back into the city centre (2 buses) for them to remove it.

I don't mind straightforward self service but this has pissed me off. Just annoyance, inconvenience and extra expense for the customer- all so the business can make more money.

Any practical ideas on how to remove the device welcome.

I think its fun. You get to see if a job in retail is for you by practicing your till skills on yourself.

Except hardly any shops have lots of staff on tills anymore

Nelliemellie · 22/09/2024 18:01

The only thing self service is good for is saving time and checking the price, so you’re not overcharged which has happened to me many times on manned checkouts.

Chaiilatte · 22/09/2024 18:03

Can you smash it with a hammer or get a pair of pliers on it?

Atishooo · 22/09/2024 19:50

easylikeasundaymorn · 22/09/2024 13:22

well how would she know? presumably if she'd noticed a tag remover by the checkout she would have used it, so either there wasn't one or she missed it. In either case she can't go back in time and check now,

And, tbh, in either case it's still partly the store's fault, as if they are expecting customers to do all the work they at least need to make it very obvious how to do so! i.e. a prompt on the till when checking out, large signs saying, 'have you checked your item for security tags?' and a scanner that should have gone off when she walked out without having removed it!

There is a prompt on the screen and a tag remover on H&M tills.

There must be a method of removing them as I found one in a changing room. It’s a very big pin(almost stood on it).

Very strong magnet

LaineyCee · 22/09/2024 19:59

safariled · 22/09/2024 09:57

so is self service only for items with no security tag?
or do you need to call someone over to remove it?

H&M have tag removal devices at each self-service machine. There are prompts to check for and remove them. Really there’s no more risk of a security tag being left on at an unstaffed, than a staffed checkout. It’s just that in this case it’s the OP’s mistake not the staff member’s.

Omnium · 22/09/2024 20:38

Success! Thanks all for your helpful suggestions... but in the end I had to cut the seam to remove the tag, and re-sew.

Bloody hell, they'll be asking us to print our own receipts next!

🤣

The clue is in the name...SELF SERVICE

If you want to be waited on then learn to queue patiently

Edited

There's no option to in the H&M in Liverpool One. They've replaced the only till with self service tills. DD2 came home with a jacket she'd bought last week and when she got home discovered it had one of those bloody security tags on it. DH managed to remove it with pliers without damaging the jacket.

Lostinbrum · 22/09/2024 21:05

You can Google it n there's a few ways. I have melted them off wih a lighter before

I love it, quick and efficient and there were prompts for the security tag when I used them.
Annoying re the tag. We’ve previously removed with a strong magnet.

weirdstoriesdontaddup · 22/09/2024 21:09

The problem is that OP doesn’t actually work for H&M and therefore didn’t get any training on how to use their machines.

Likewise any other shop that requires paying customers to work there for free with zero training.

there would have been

you just didn’t “realise”
or you were only “vaguely aware” of it!

Think you have made your point now, the OP is now aware!

You've definitely hammered home your point.

Seems it's easy done👀

Ourshoddyhouse · 22/09/2024 21:14

if you've got a supermarket nearby that sells clothes that have the tags on could you take it there with the receipt and ask if they'd remove it for you?

You said this ..

Waited on?

As if expecting to be served in a shop is somehow an entitled thing to expect or that wanting a human being to serve you makes you some kind of princess.

This. Exactly this. I expect the Op was also paying over the odds and that the jumper was 50% polyester that'll bobble in the 1st wear (no offence to the Ops choice just that jumpers these days have never even seen wool). But, yes, she's a princess for wanting an actual human being to serve her, remove the tag and fold her jumper nicely and put it into a bag.

Yep I hate it too exact same thing happened to me and I only noticed the day before I was going on holiday. Had to do a last minute dash to nearest h and m. What a pain. They only seem to have literally one person on tills and one on changing rooms.

Yes, I used to work in a clothes shop, and we'd remove other stores tags if there was a valid receipt.

Auburngal · 23/09/2024 07:15

Matalan also do self scan. If you want to pay with cash, collecting a C&C, got a refund (including online refunds), you queue at the only one or sometimes two manned tills.

Try this:

Excellent! Thank you for posting @WhiskerPatrol . I wish I'd seen this before I cut the seam of my jumper. I'll definitely try this fork method if it ever happens again.

I think I’ve seen someone on tv recently who turned up to be interviewed with new trousers to change into and only realised in the studio they had the tag on. Can’t for the life of me think who it was
