To be so upset that my DDs bunny is gone

Excuse the overly sentimental post. My mum bought my now two year old a bunny when I was pregnant and it’s been her favourite bunny, she goes everywhere with it and sleeps with it. It’s her ultimate comfort. Yesterday on holiday I don’t even know how but we’ve lost it. I can’t find it anywhere. I bought her a new one and she knows it’s not “bunny” and is sad and I feel so incredibly guilty/ I’m also upset as it was a lovely gift from my mum. How do I get over the guilt?! And will my two year old remember this forever?! I feel terrible.

I don't think your 2 year old will remember forever but I can see why you're sad. It sounds a bit more sad for you than DD though from what you've written. We have given DD multiple "snuggies" from birth and regularly swap them out and wash them so that she can't get attached to a particular one, is it worth starting this now with DD just in case a new teddy gets lost?

Also, it took me longer than I'm proud of to realise you didn't mean a real rabbit 😂

ThirstyThursday · 21/09/2024 14:42

I'm very very sentimental, soft... blah blah.

id turn the accommodation upside down, inside out.

remembering when she last had bunny

retracing steps

putting up posters

posting on local sites

asking people

bunny would be found. then put on house arrest! 'At home bunny sits waiting for you to come home' 'travel bunny goes out with her'

Grmumpy · 21/09/2024 14:44

I would tell her that bunny had gone to live in the fields with other bunnies but the new bunny wants to stay with her.

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 21/09/2024 14:45

Look online for a replacement ASAP in case you can't find it and as a future back up if you do. Mousey 2 came from Ebay. It was forever known as this name, I still occasionally wonder what on earth happened to original mousey.

BlueMum16 · 21/09/2024 14:46

I'd also search everywhere and contact wherever you have visited and post online. Bunny may turn up.

My DC (14) left a much loved teddy in Spain last summer. Teddy had travelled everywhere with us and several hospital stays. Teddy decided they wanted to stay in Spain when we came home. I contacted the hotel who found Teddy and arranged a courier to get teddy home to us in the UK. £80 later and teddy now doesn't travel.

LoquaciousPineapple · 21/09/2024 14:47

For future, when DS shows attachment to a toy we get a spare. And then we rotate them on a regular basis so they're equally worn and smell similar (and have been through the wash an equal number of times if necessary).

We only do this for the special ones, I wouldn't duplicate every toy in the house!

ImNunTheWiser · 21/09/2024 14:47

Not unreasonable at all to be sad. 😔

And although it doesn’t help you now, I agree - house arrest in future - if you find bunny or if DD accepts the new bunny. DD1’s Pooh and DD2’s Duckie NEVER left the house. For trips away we bought Substitute Pooh and Duckie and got them used to the idea that the originals couldn’t come with us but their Subs would do their best to fill the gap. We weren’t away often enough for the Subs to become imperative so it worked well.

Get posting on Facebook sites linked to where you are on holiday. Are you on holiday in a hotel? Bear had a lovely trip to the hotel laundry when we were on holiday but after speaking to housekeeping he came back safe and sound a few days later.

CheeseWisely · 21/09/2024 14:48

As you've said you're on holiday; if you have a housekeeping service do ask them to check it hasn't got bundled up in sheets or towels and gone off to the laundry! I used to work in hotels and it happened all the time!

msmatcha · 21/09/2024 15:00

When you find bunny (I think you will by PP methods) buy five more bunnies. You need team bunny.

Thudercatsrule · 21/09/2024 15:06

Is the new bunny the same as the old bunny?

I had this when my DS was little, i was heartbroken and sick with guilt and ended up ordering a replacement and getting it flown over from NY.

I told my DS that monkey went home early because he was dirty and when new monkey arrived we both put him in the washing machine, so when he came out he smelt and looked a little different, but he was clean and happy!

doodleschnoodle · 21/09/2024 15:09

Where are you? A found bunny popped up on my FB this morning!

Have you found a local FB page for where you are on holiday and tried posting to it?

This happened to us too.

We somehow lost original teddy. Still have no idea what happened to it. It was a Jellycat one and the only one we could find on ebay which looked exactly the same was substantially bigger - probably at least two sizes bigger. Dd was 4 at the time and was a little suspicious but generally accepted it. It is still the most prized soft toy and as such has been left at home while others go on the great uni adventure.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 21/09/2024 15:14

Can you post a picture of the original bunny? I am sure you can get a replacement one somewhere.

blossombb · 21/09/2024 15:42

I have posted on the fb page so fingers crossed! I bought her a different bunny which she liked for about 15 minutes then said she didn’t like it…
I have found another bunny on Vinted so have bought it! It’s an Jellycat one but they’re out of stock online.
I can’t believe how much emotion is behind a cuddly toy but she never goes anywhere without it!

Any update on bunny?

SeaWitchly · 27/09/2024 04:44

We lost my then 4yo DS's beloved 'Sharkey' soft toy whilst on holiday - it turned up in the hotel laundry and was posted back to us. He is now 15yo and still likes taking Sharkey on holiday :)

Any update on bunny?

It wasn’t found :(
I even had a name tag on the label for her on it.

i found a duplicate one on Vinted and luckily my DD believes that bunny went for a “wash” and is absolutely ecstatic that bunny is back. I still very sad though lol it was a gift from my mum when I was pregnant and it was the last one in the store, so it’s sentimental to me. Glad DD is happy now

I'm glad she at least thinks bunny is home, bless her

BogRollBOGOF · 30/09/2024 07:11

DS bought a little kitten at Cub camp which disappeared in the hotel room on holiday. Being small.and white, I suspect that it was bundled unnoticed in a bedding change.

He was gutted having to leave the accommodation without kitten and upset for weeks after so I ended up secretly contacting the camp site and getting a new one with companion of a different colour. They were waiting on the doorstep outside for him to walk himself home from school and he says he cried with happiness. I left them there like that so he was free to create his own story about them. He's old enough to know what literally happened but it's creating that new emotional attachment.

He now can't take white cuddly toys away and has to choose something that stands out more.

Oblomov24 · 30/09/2024 07:36

I had this with a Jellycat Rabbit that my mum bought ds1. Hope you find it.

FaiIureToLunch · 30/09/2024 07:39

I had this and found another one on eBay. Then told my child a pack of lies about how the teddy wanted a longer holiday and came home in a taxi.
