To ask why is dh's asthma OK in Corfu?

We're here now and dh hasn't used his inhalers at all. Been here since Thursday. We've been before and dh didn't then either. We thought that must have been a one off?

It's mild asthma but he is a but wheezy at home. It came on very late in life.

Any ideas? It's rained so not been dry every day.

@Fink that interesting. Such shame for you though.

Meh. It's well managed in the UK, and it's likely that I'll move away again once dc have finished school. So it's more of an annoyance than anything serious. Just interesting to know that it wouldn't be a problem elsewhere.

It's the dry air in my experience (pretty severe asthma). I remember going to Egypt and being amazed at how much better my asthma was.

That sounds awful, that frequency. I suffer too. Are you using triptans ?

Yeah, and I have Botox and acupuncture so they used to be a lot worse.

I would like to try botox when I have another bad phase. I can go weeks without one, or just weeks straight of it then it goes away for a while. I think it was about 6 weeks last time, it can be debilitating

I was the same with long covid, so much nerve damage, aches, pains, chest and heart pains, the second I went to Portgual for a week I was a million times better.

I’m glad things improved for you.
It’s amazing how just a change in climate, can give someone a new lease on life!

Bloom15 · 21/09/2024 18:13

I have brittle asthma and the dry, warm/hot weather abroad does wonders for see for my chest. Damp and humid conditions do me no good

Yousay55 · 21/09/2024 18:24

I find my hay fever disappears on holiday to the Mediterranean. I suppose the pollen is different there.

@Gcsunnyside23 I have had asthma most of my life - upwards of average to fairly serious - particularly triggered when I was very little living in humid Hong Kong. I only found out about Montelukast last year and it has been a game changer ! I live in a tropical climate now, humidity def makes it worse, but it is seasonal. Sea air is the best thing...

Off topic, re the IOW TB sanitorium, I had relatives in the area, they spoke about it being demolished in the '60's..becoming part of the grounds of the gorgoreus Botanical Gardens (quite a stunning building judging by old pics) Apparently lots of builders downed tools and offed, it was quite woo by all accounts......(off topic)

Same happens to my DS (not Corfu): there will be an airborne tree or grass allergen that your DH is allergic to that doesn’t exist where you are right now in Corfu. Rain always helps.

This, plus the air will be cleaner. Industry in the U.K. affects asthma a lot. Also my DD has always been better by the sea even in the U.K.

I know someone who moved from UK to Canada and never needed to use their inhaler again!

This happened to me when I moved to the canaries.

But I also never needed it again when I returned to the uk 🤷‍♀️

How do you get on with montelekust? I had a very bad reaction to it, but have very 'sticky' saliva which is what it was prescribed for. I can't get a GP appointment to change the prescription to something else as yet.

It's been a gamechanger for me. I have less migraines, less congestion, less wheezing and I even sleep better. I have very extreme allergies where I had to get monthly injections over a 6 month period although it didn't fully settle but this helps deal with the tail end

It's great to find something that works isn't it. I am terrible in hot humidity and very cold weather but cope much better now. Although everything triggers me but between omizilub injections and this it's been life changing for me. Not all my issues are asthma but they trigger it so badly and it helps me live better

Are you sure he has asthma and not wheezing caused by an allergy such as dust mites or pollen? Get a skin prick allergen test.

Was going to say this.

My DC have allergy induced asthma which is non existent when we holiday in Greece. I put it down to the lack of carpets and different pollen. Skin prick test can tell.

A good air purifier and very frequent vacuuming and damp dusting if so.

DrCoconut · 21/09/2024 22:35

My DC have much more trouble with their chests during autumn and winter. It's just a nasty unhealthy time of the year for them and we look forward to better weather each year as it brings a sustained break from having someone ill. So I'd say its possibly climate related.

Pyjamatimenow · 21/09/2024 22:39

The fecking mosquitos have probably devoured whatever your dh is allergic to

Sepoctnov · 21/09/2024 22:41

Cleaner and fresher air.

Warmer weather.

Possibly fresher soft furnishings and no carpet where you are staying versus your home?
