To feel frustrated with my freezer situation as a renter?

I’ve been renting my place for a while, and for more than a few weeks now, my freezer has been malfunctioning. I turned it off and unplugged it, leaving the door open for 24h+, but it hasn’t defrosted properly, and the ice buildup is still significant.

On top of that, my cooker also packed up, and I haven’t had a working cooker for a week now.

I’ve tried several things:

  • unplugging and leaving the door open for 24h+
  • using warm water
  • clearing the drain hole

Despite my efforts, it hasn’t improved, and I’m now left without a functioning freezer for weeks. I was hoping to sort this out myself before contacting the landlord.

AIBU to be frustrated? What should I do next?

good grief op

contact your LL obviously

I mean it has to defrost eventually if it's not turned on doesn't it? That is the first thing your landlord will say, to defrost it.

For the cooker, tell the landlord. I'm the first to slag off landlords quite honestly but expecting them to be psychic is a bit much.

whoputallofthatthere · 21/09/2024 11:30

Have you really left this for weeks? If the appliances came with the house and are not yours, you need to call the Landlord.

Positivenancy · 21/09/2024 11:31

You contact your landlord surely @Silentfriend ? I would NOT live like that for a week! The toilet seat broke in my house on Sunday (and when I say broke, the hinge broke so it was still usable) I messaged on Monday and a man came round yesterday( arranged that day as I was wfh!) that’s what my extortionate rent pays for imo.

CoastalCalm · 21/09/2024 11:32

It has to defrost unless you are living underground , leave it open and use a hairdryer ? You can get defrosting spray too - you might find the seal hasn’t been fully closing due to ice build up which will fix it

Yes, my landlord is aware of the cooker issue; someone came round yesterday, but nothing will actually be done to replace it until next week… hopefully.

As for the comment about “expecting them to be psychic,” I never implied that in my post. I just wanted to communicate my frustrations clearly, given the circumstances.

Well you contact the landlord?

Brendabigbaps · 21/09/2024 11:34

Boiling water in a large bowl and change it every 15 mins, leave the door open and switch it off at the mains.
i defrosted one a couple of weeks ago that was full of ice, took an hour max.

And what was the suggestion in the mean time? Are you getting a rent reduction? I wouldn’t be able to cook meals. Without a cooker, can you?

BloodyAdultDC · 21/09/2024 11:36

With a significant build up of ice you'd need to unplug and leave open for more than a day before it all melts. Go in hard - bowls of boiling water, plastic spatula and lots of towels.
Mine was so frozen the seal couldn't shut properly and it caused further icing.

Once it's completely melted plug back in and should be much more efficient.

Well I was away for the last couple of weeks and returned at the end of last week. The cooker issue happened on Sunday and I reported this to the landlord yes. I have mentioned this in the comments.

No suggestion in the meantime tbh. None at all.

I have done this already regarding the cooker, as soon as it happened.

That’s not acceptable @Silentfriend you need to call the landlord and come to an arrangement. What other cooking appliances do you have available to use?

ok

So so the same for this

it’s a no brainer

BloodyAdultDC · 21/09/2024 11:39

Your landlord isn't responsible for defrosting your freezer op. The very fact it is freezing so much suggests it's working properly (and overcompensating if there's ice stopping it from closing properly.

Defrosting a freezer is normal domestic task op, not a landlord task. Like hoovering the floor, or de-scaling the showerhead occasionally.

sleepyscientist · 21/09/2024 11:41

@Positivenancy air fryer or hob if it's separate. We own our house even ordering a cooker for immediate delivery I'm looking at Friday plus fitting.

That’s why I haven’t contacted him about the freezer—I’ve been trying to sort this out myself, as I mentioned in my post. It’s actually others in the comments suggesting I should reach out to him regarding the freezer issue.

A normal domestic task? I don't think I've defrosted a freezer since 2005, I didn't even realise they still made ones that need to be defrosted. And we just have a plain old budget fridge freezer, nothing fancy.

Well, it’s not actually a no-brainer for me. I wasn’t sure defrosting the freezer is the landlord's responsibility, or if he would try and charge me for it (they do this if they feel the callout was a tenant fault) which is why I’ve been trying to sort it out myself.

OP posts:
burnoutbabe · 21/09/2024 11:44

Yes I have never defroster freezer(but have the fridge)

But you start it as soon as ice starts forming to avoid issues.

Oven -well you expect same level as of you owned? I'd try to fix and then order a new one, relying on ready meals or boil on hob or takeaway until it arrives.
