In 24 hours my 15 month old has just randomly started urging at everything, food on a spoon, things she's touching, I just kissed her goodnight and she gagged. Any experience with this???

Urging?

Gagging, like when you feel sick

Oh I see, I get what gagging is, never heard of urging before though. Have they been unwell recently? Could it be a build up of flem on their chest making them sensitive?

ru53 · 19/09/2024 19:07

Is it genuine gagging or is she just acting it out? I think sometimes they’ve just seen something and they are copying it to understand it. My dd went through a phase of hitting herself on the head - turned out MIL was doing it as an exaggerated ‘oh no’ type gesture and she’d just picked it up from her! If she seems otherwise fine I wouldn’t worry too much. Does she go to nursery? Maybe she saw another child doing it?

It's probably the Cornish in me😂 and no she hasn't been unwell 🤔

Is she particularly dribbly? Tooth coming through?

I think it's genuine, she's super delayed and has no understanding of anything, doesn't do eye contact, doesn't talk, doesn't respond and doesn't go to nursery so I don't think she's picking it up for somewhere. It's really odd her face goes all sour and she just full on gags🤔

Never really been a dribbler, but definitely could be a tooth as she only has 3!

Hi OP, sometimes it can be a bit of a sensory overload especially when you are saying it's touching things or being touched. Some textures just totally gross children out and can be common for children who may potentially be on the ASD pathway.

NorthantsNewbie · 19/09/2024 20:28

You say she doesn’t talk - does she make sounds/noises? I ended up taking DD to the GP because shortly after we started weaning she used to make this horrendous choking noise - I got it on video a few times. He laughed (nicely) and said it was just her learning how to use her throat muscles and explore her gag reflex.

Can you film it and run it past the GP or a health visitor? Presumably they are already involved if you say she is delayed. My money is on teeth though (it always seems to be teeth…).

Makingchocolatecake · 19/09/2024 22:51

Maybe she just likes how it feels in her throat.
