Pregnancy vaccines

Hi all,
I've just been for a 27 week scan and was recommended to have the whooping cough vaccine. I'd like to hear others' stories, recommendations etc as to whether or not this is necessary.
It's been many, many years since I've had any type of vaccine and have been living a very happy, healthy life so yes, I am a little sceptical of injecting something into my body. I do realise this is more for the baby than for my benefit.

This is for the baby. There has been a massive increase in whooping cough and infants have died in the UK recently. It's very, very dangerous for babies.Take the vaccine.

I had it recently, I was slightly fever-ish for an afternoon, that was all.

Itsthecatsfault · 19/09/2024 14:31

Yes they clearly recommend them just for giggles. Whooping cough is awful for adults and downright dangerous for tiny babies.

I know of other healthy, happy adults who have recently had whooping cough and it’s miserable and takes months to get over properly.

Have the vaccine

Cuwins · 19/09/2024 14:32

Absolutely do it. My partner had whooping cough as an adult about 10 years ago and it was horrific- coughing till he couldn't breath and vomiting, very scary plus it was 3 months before he slept through the night. I can't imagine what it would have been like for a tiny baby.
I believe the figures show a big increase in cases lately.

Starshapeddreams · 19/09/2024 14:32

This is for the baby, the UK has issues with quite high whooping cough rates.
Friends baby spent weeks in hospital with whooping cough, she saw other babies die.
It's a tried and tested vaccine and could save your babies life.
I've had it 3 times, no issues and none of my kids have got it.

Wobblyheart · 19/09/2024 14:34

I would 100% do it. I did it in my pregnancy and no problems at all. As others said it is protect the baby from the whooping cough after they are born but not ready for their immunisations yet. My parents in law almost law their daughter to the whooping cough when she was an infant. Protect your child.

I had absolutely no side effects whatsover.

CaptainCabinets · 19/09/2024 14:34

Lots of babies have died from whooping cough recently. When I had my jab at 16 weeks pregnant, all I had was a sore arm for a few days. Much rather that than a dead child.

Begaydocrime94 · 19/09/2024 14:34

Vaccine was painless for me, no after effects at all just a slightly sore arm. You won't even be able to tell anything's different. Would highly recommend the vaccine.

Wobblyheart · 19/09/2024 14:36

Also, I'd say i would understand people being sceptical of the new vaccines but this vaccine has been around for ages. No need to worry. Vaccines save lives.

meganna · 19/09/2024 14:36

It's for the baby, take it!

I've known a couple of normally extremely healthy adults be totally taken down by whooping cough in the past couple of months. It's horrific, and can be fatal for young babies.

Sugarplummama · 19/09/2024 14:37

Friend of mine had the same mindset as you did with the vaccines, guess what her child was in hospital just 8 days old because she didn’t get the vaccine. I felt awful for the baby and she did recover, but friend wanted lots of sympathy for her unwell baby but imo she caused it in a way by deciding not to bother with the jab because “it’s unnecessary to put in my body”

she was anti vax now she’s made sure her babies had all the jabs

Peonies12 · 19/09/2024 14:37

You can be as happy and healthy as you want, but it won’t protect your baby. Whopping coughs vaccine isn’t for you, it’s to protect babies who are very vulnerable to it until they have their own vaccines. Many babies die each year from whooping cough, there’s an increased outbreak at the moment. I had zero side effects from mine. Same with RSV which you should also get T protect the baby. Please speak to your midwife or nurse if you have worries, they can reassure you.

I feel a bit harsh saying she caused it, obviously having the jab doesn’t 100% stop your baby from getting unwell, but I do believe she would of prevented baby getting so sick / sick at all

mindutopia · 19/09/2024 14:40

Absolutely have it. Whooping cough is deadly for small babies and it’s made a resurgence in recent years. Also protective for you against everything included in the vaccine including tetanus, which is good to get every 10 years anyway.

mitogoshigg · 19/09/2024 14:40

Please take it for all the reasons above, I was offered a booster by my gp (not pregnant) as there are lots of cases locally

LongLiveTheLego · 19/09/2024 14:40

Whooping cough kills babies it's that simple, they have zero immunity.

LeiaOrganaBananaHamock · 19/09/2024 14:41

Have you ever considered that your happy, healthy life is down to your previous vaccines?

Get the jab, protect your baby.

curiouscat1987 · 19/09/2024 14:43

Your baby has a better chance of having a happy, healthy life like you if you have the vaccine. Its literally to protect them, i really dont understand why people wouldnt. Everything in life comes with risks, surely on the balance of probabilities the risks are clearly outweighed by the benefits here??

Gertrudetheadelie · 19/09/2024 14:46

My aunt and uncle had it recently. Said it was incredibly scary because they woke in the night unable to breathe through coughing. I can't imagine how scary that must be as a parent to see your baby go through that.

doodleschnoodle · 19/09/2024 14:46

Whooping cough kills tiny babies. The NHS don't spend money on pointless vaccines. Have the jab.

emziteg · 19/09/2024 14:46

Thank you all for answers and feedback while also managing not to jump down my throat too much doing the whole provax/antivax thing.
Reason I ask the question here is, while I am British, I currently live in Spain. Things are done differently here in the pregnancy journey. Unlike in the UK where you have a midwife throughout most of the pregnancy journey, we don't have that here. So I feel completely and utterly lost and alone most of the time. I still don't even know where I will be giving birth, meeting the hospital teams here doesn't seem to be as common practise here - you just arrive in A&E and be handed off to whoever.
I'm feeling totally overwhelmed by the whole experience and thus, most of the time, really disliking being pregnant.

The NHS is not vaccinating people for fun. It costs money and they don't have enough to waste.

Whooping cough kills babies. As does measles, in case you were thinking about not getting the MMR.

Hayley1256 · 19/09/2024 14:49

I would and did have the vaccine, it's heartbreaking how many babies have died of whooping cough recently (mainly due to people not getting the vaccine). These deaths were mostly avoidable! It's been on the rise due to this

Crunchymum · 19/09/2024 14:50

All 3 of mine were winter born and I had my flu jab in each pregnancy. Didn't have them before (nor since)

I'd have also had the whooping cough had it been on the vaccine schedule when I was pregnant.

MagAmberson · 19/09/2024 14:55

I had whooping cough as a baby and over 40 years later my mother would still remark about how terrifying it was for her as she thoughti was going to die. I received the vaccine during each of my pregnancies.

I remember sharing a ward with a new mother who hadn't received the vaccine but a day after giving birth she was told there was an outbreak in their older child's preschool. She was demanding the vaccine for her newborn and she didn't want to be discharged in case the baby was exposed! The nurses were like "why didn't you get the vaccine when it was offered?"
