Women dying their hair grey

Or ‘silver’

What’s this about? Most probably didn’t get the look they wanted. Why dye hair to colour which would be your natural colour in your 40s and above?

OP posts:

You don’t just wake up one day and your hair is grey/silver though do you? If it’s anything like mine you’ve got years of white/silvery bits poking through at random. I can see the appeal of just getting it to be grey all at once.

FairlyAntisocial · 19/09/2024 12:53

What is wrong with the hair colour of people over 40?

MorrisZapp · 19/09/2024 12:53

Because if you don't bite the bullet and go grey in one go, you'll have to either dye it forever or grow out a harsh line where previous dye has been.

MorrisZapp · 19/09/2024 12:54

I'm going 'bronde' from bleached blonde, feels brilliant to move closer to my own colour.

AlexandraJJ · 19/09/2024 12:54

With the right skin tone it’s very striking and quite hard to achieve.

Onlyonekenobe · 19/09/2024 12:55

It looks amazing on young skin! I did it. Not grey: white. It was super high maintenance and very expensive. But I loved it.

DillDanding · 19/09/2024 12:55

I can understand people doing it when their hair is going grey and they don’t want to dye it and don’t want the badger look.

I really don’t understand the trend that was around a year or so ago where some young women were dyeing their hair grey. Why would anyone want to be grey when young?

Elderberrier · 19/09/2024 12:57

I think it looks good - it’s obvious it’s not grey like natural grey. Never done it but think it’s a valid colour like any other!

Titsywoo · 19/09/2024 12:57

You mean young people who have no grey? I guess it's in fashion. I am 45 and parts of my hair are grey, parts are mousy and parts are dark brown after I got sick of highlights and grew my hair out. Since I'm not keen on the mesh of different colours in layers that I have right now I am hoping to get the whole thing dyed a mix of steel grey, silver and purple so it looks fab and I don't get bad roots as the rest of the grey starts to come through. Grey can look great - it's just a colour like any other!

TheRestIsEntertainment · 19/09/2024 12:57

Some people (particularly olive/tanned skin tone) look absolutely stunning with silver hair.

WhereIsMyLight · 19/09/2024 12:59

Grey has been trendy for a few years now. It’s not that they didn’t get the colour they wanted as this colour will need to be achieved over multiple visits to the hairdresser. Most people don’t go grey all at once though, it’s peppered through their hair and they may not be completely grey until much later than their 40s. I’d consider going grey if I thought I could pull it off but my hair is dark so regrowth will show quickly. I’m in limbo of too much grey sprinkled through my hair that it’s noticeable but still not grey enough to make it easier to go fully grey.

MartinCrieffsLemon · 19/09/2024 13:01

Because they want to?

Because some of us have been greying since we were early 20s?

Because it's their hair and they can do what they want?

Because a good deal of hair dying is dying it something that's not your natural colour?

YellowComb · 19/09/2024 13:03

Are we only allowed to colour our hair green or purple?

DoYouReally · 19/09/2024 13:15

I think it looks fantastic on some people depending on their complexion.

I think the man term is silver fox.

Didimum · 19/09/2024 13:18

This is such a weird post – what's the issue?

I think it looks great, as do many hair colours on many people.

Dahlietta · 19/09/2024 13:30

This is slightly besides the point, but you reminded me of a (male) friend I had once whose mother had assured him that any woman over the age of 40 who didn't have grey hair had definitely dyed it. Just wanted to clear up for anyone who needs it that this is not true!

EnterFunnyNameHere · 19/09/2024 13:38

Most probably didn’t get the look they wanted

How on earth can you claim this?! Maybe they bloody love it! Presumably they do it because they like the look, I'm not sure there's some deep philosophical reason...

Yeah I agree with this.

I'm over 40 with only a couple of greys so far, but I'll be going grey with grace when the time comes. I don't like the look of dyed grey hair at all. But - as per your question OP - it's just a fashion trend like any other.

midgetastic · 19/09/2024 13:43

Women and men can dye their own hair as they see fit

It's not something that materially impacts others

You might ask why women do it more than men, what pressures exist that push women to spending time and effort in that way but you can't winge about people doing what they want

Conkersinautumn · 19/09/2024 13:44

It's not your hair, it's really not important.

RonnieOmelettes · 19/09/2024 13:50

The more the better! Anything to promote being grey being seen as positive rather than negative is a good thing in my book.

henlake7 · 19/09/2024 13:53

I can see why. Even if you dont spend years with a salt and pepper look that rarely looks good then there is the fact that not all grey hair is the same.
I know somebody who dyed their totally grey hair because it was a weird yellowy grey in its natural state (not nice, kinda vaguely pee stained looking!).

OldTinHat · 19/09/2024 14:01

I'm contemplating this. Although I'm 53!

I have long hair, currently stuck out of the way in a pony tail. All natural colour but the ends are sandy blonde, underneath is dark mousy, around my face and roots are silvery grey. It looks like I've fallen into several pots of hair dye but it's all natural. And looks ridiculous. So I'm thinking about dying it grey to match the roots.

Benshawsberries · 19/09/2024 14:08

Not a follower of the going natural route as I think grey hair really ages you

My SIL has been growing her grey out for years, it looks awful. I’ve always been jealous of her looks, beautiful olive skin, never needed makeup, always looked younger than her age, but she has the crazy wanting to go grey naturally thing going on. She would absolutely have been better dying her hair. But now she’s almost done she’s gone from someone who was always mistaken for someone a lot younger to looking 10 years older than her age.

My niece also died her hair grey at 24, thankfully she’s back to her natural colour as it looked like they grey sapped what little colour she had in her pale skin out.

I like grey on older woman, but don’t understand why anyone would force it until they have to.
