People have no patience about long queues

longlocks · 19/09/2024 12:07

I’m at a tourist attraction for an exhibition,On website, notices and staff say that queuing would be at least an hour outside and an hour inside. Plus walking around the exhibition takes an hour.

So I am queuing around people who are moaning about the waiting. No booking available before.

Then people are saying “I’m meeting up with so and so for lunch at 1pm.’ Well if you listened or read notices you shouldn’t have queued!

I know in general life moves faster than in the past so people do appear more impatient.

But in this case less so. Hour long queues for theme parks and attractions are a modern phenomenon - never happened in the 80s or 90s. It may be more people in general or higher expectations for leisure activities.

Any way - it sucks. Can't think of anything I'd queue 2 hours for.

WhatNoRaisins · 19/09/2024 13:32

That would have to be an absolutely awe inspiring attraction for it to be worth 2 hours of queuing.

Not entirely a modern phenomenon...

How 1.6million queued to see Tutankhamun's treasures at British Museum

Opened by the Queen in March 1972, the 'Treasures of Tutankhamun' exhibition beautifully displayed just a small fraction of the more than 5,000 artefacts found by Howard Carter.

Fuck that, I'm surprised there hasn't been a bloodbath stampede yet. Moaning sounds positively tame.

Only thing I'd even consider queuing 2 hours for would be a Henry Cavill kiss-a-thon.

TheSeagullsSquawk · 19/09/2024 13:41

Wow on Tutankhamen exhibition! and you are right people have always queued a long time to be the 'first' to see something on a limited tour.

I think it's the everydayness which is different.

2 hours to queue for an exhibition that takes an hour to get around? That would piss me off too. Organisers should organise - and that means not making people queue for hours, there are plenty of ways around it.

Totally agree. Why would anyone choose to spend an hour outside in a line of people and then spend another hour outside in a line of people? I just would not do that. There is nothing I would wait for an hour in a line of people for, nothing

timeforanewmoniker · 19/09/2024 13:49

If you don't complain about queues then you maybe need more going on in your life, because even reading an ebook it's boring. You should value your time more.

Fizbosshoes · 19/09/2024 13:50

The worst thing is queuing on the phone with intermittent automated message saying "do you know you can do xy or z online, just visit www.our company..."
Well duh if what I wanted was available easily online why would i be spending 50 min in a queue listening to horrific lift music...??

TickingAlongNicely · 19/09/2024 13:52

People complain when they have to book a slot.
They complain if they can't book a slot and have to queue instead.

They will never please everyone. Popular venue = having to deal with other people.

Sums it up perfectly.

I've got better things to do with my life than spending two hours in a queue.
As previous posters have said, timed entry is the obvious solution. But they won't do that as they can charge more for "fast track" passes.
It's just another scam to get more money out of people, and I refuse to get drawn into that scenario.

Colosseum in Rome. Got there 8:15am in 28c heat (September!) and queued for 2 hours outside then another 45 mins through airport type security- bags scanned, body wand etc

Yet people moaning about queues at TS gigs.

If you're in that queue to see the Queen, you're too late.

I remember having problems accessing my internet and every five minutes “please visit our website at www. for our FAQs.”

Yes I am the phone because I can’t go onto your website.

That's poor management on the part of the gallery. It's relatively straightforward to allocate time slots and save everyone the inconvenience.

I'd rather not attend.

wordler · 19/09/2024 14:22

I queued for what felt like hours for the Terracotta warriors exhibition in London. I think it was less than 2 hours though.

DickEmery · 19/09/2024 14:23

Sorry, X post. Queues for attractions in Italy are bloody awful because touts buy up a lot of the official timed tickets and resell them as 'skip the line' on getyourguide and suchlike.

So you end up either getting scalped by resellers or spending half your holiday in queues.

If you're going to other places have a look at the official websites (you can do it while you're standing in this queue!) and see if you can get timed entry tickets yourself from them. It will save you a lot of hassle.

If you go across to the forum first and get the all in one ticket you get to skip the first line outside

Edit: or at least you could 10 years ago.

It’s different people who complain if they have to book a slot.

And these people should not be pandered to as they simply can’t be bothered to organise themselves.

People who can be bothered to think in advance shouldn’t be stuck with having to queue because others moan about not being able to “just turn up”. In fact the very words “just turn up” have become rage inducing due to these type of people.

I’d be betting that Italians have a system that means if you understand the system you can skip an awful queue.

Edit - this is said with approval
