Noisy ward

Aibu to be grumpy as on the childrens ward with my daughter and machines are beeping non stop, nurses talking loudly in bay and kid talking loudly (for no reason!!).
My wee girl has surgery tomorrow and we were asked to stay in the night before as the hospital is far away from where we live.
Being kept awake by all of the above. I know machines beep that cant be helped but the talking is ridiculous in a shared bay!! The parents get chucked out their camp beds at half 7 in the morning, not looking forward to this is i do manage to sleep! My Daughter is also wide awake with the noise. We both have headphones but unfortunately dont drown out all the beeping and noise. Aibu to be grumpy? Should i say to the nurse we cant sleep for all the noise or is this pointless?

Brace yourself for a tough nights sleep. Unless the staff start a Congo and then let rip.
Wards are not restful

hellacool · 19/09/2024 00:35

Some people don't realise that the blue curtains only prevent people from seeing them, and that their voices carry across the ward.

First of all, you should ask them if they wouldn't mind keeping the noise down as it's keeping you awake. Most people will be apologetic and keep it down.

TwitchyJerk · 19/09/2024 00:36

Hospitals are so noisy, it was hell when I had to do an overnight stay (especially as I was twitching in response to noise as one of my symptoms)

I would have hoped the children's ward would be better but all wards are full of sick people and rest is so important for recovery So all should be quiet at night.

But, probably not much that can/will be done if you tell the nurses it's too noisy.

Best wishes for dd surgery!

I'm often in the hospital due to my daughters asthma and it's awful yes. It's the worst thing about hospitals. I don't know how anyone recovers from anything in there.
Was in 6 nights once with my daughter abd I was honestly this close to a breakdown from lack of sleep. And i always bring wax earplugs but it's still impossible to get more than a couple of hours sleep.
The food as well.. who ears dinner at 5pm?? And then that's it till like 8am.
So if you've gone in there from A&E and you haven't got a partner to bring you anything you are screwed.

I had to stay overnight in hospital for a few days with my son. I wa so tired through lack of sleep by the 4th day, at 4am ish I just blurted out “shut up will you!” I was almost hallucinating with tiredness. The moment it came out I was shocked at myself and went to apologise. Nurses were lovely and said I should’ve said earlier as they could have moved us to a side room. After than we were moved and it was much better.

Floralnomad · 19/09/2024 01:00

You can certainly ask the actual staff members to keep the noise down , less easy wrt other patients .

BoreOffAboutYerChickensEmma · 19/09/2024 01:03

Remembered another time I was in hositpal after a csection. The woman in the next bed was nocturnal, she would sleep loads in the day, then at night, even if her baby wasn’t crying, she would make a sound like,

“Pst pst pst pst pst” as if calling a cat over! Hour on end of pst pst pst. She did not take any notice, if she even heard, the loud tut I gave her.

DecafGreen · 19/09/2024 05:36

Try doing it for two weeks with a seriously sick baby. I was hallucinating by night three. It's one night. You and your child will get over it.

jd88123 · 19/09/2024 09:03

@DecafGreen not helpful. We are in for more than 1 night actually!
Thanks for the helpful responses. Got to sleep about half 2 and woken up at 7am saying the parent beds go away now!

I get it, OP. HCPs become desensitised to, or learn to tune out noise. They also forget how loud they can be on night duty!

I really think you should have a word with the nurse in charge or ward manager so they can handover to night staff about the talking noise at night.

PuppiesLove · 19/09/2024 10:00

Hospitals are just noisy places, especially the children's ward. Just how it is. Most of us have to deal with it at some stage.

kenidorm · 19/09/2024 10:13

kid talking loudly (for no reason!!).

I mean, they are in hospital. Just a kid. It's likely that they are worried about something and have stuff going on. I wouldn't get worked up about a kid being loud on a children's ward. I think that's the place you need to give them a bit of a break tbh.

Krumblina · 19/09/2024 10:25

Can you get ear plugs?

Potentialmadcatlady · 19/09/2024 10:33

The longest I was in in one stretch was 8weeks with my DS. Totally knackered the whole time. Very little sleep and a seriously ill child. One night a child was brought in as no beds on admission ward ( happened v often). Q moving furniture around in middle of night. Doctors etc appearing to do admission so child with asthma. Then Neb running overnight until about 4am. Mother and child giving off loudly as Mother wasnt given her own bed ( none of us had on this ward due to type of ward)
At 4am ish I finally managed to fall asleep with my DS. 7am everyone was woken. The parent turned to me and said ‘you snored, please stop it’
I thought about it for a second and decided it was best to say nothing because if I had opened my mouth I was worried the Kracken would appear out of my throat and destroy her 😂😂😂

Krumblina · 19/09/2024 16:47

Why do they make everyone get up early?

Planits · 19/09/2024 17:02

@Krumblina because there are routines in hospital which can’t be conducted with camp beds across the floors.

Saz12 · 19/09/2024 17:46

Children's wards are awful! The constant noise, the stress... dc was in hospital from a&e very frequently as a pre-schooler, for days at a time (fortunately not weeks!).
Hope everything goes well and you get back home SOON!!

Katemax82 · 19/09/2024 18:26

I remember spending 5 days in hospital at age 8 (1992) with septicemia from our puppy scratching my ankle. Back then it was quite pleasant. I actually liked the food and it wasn't ridiculously noisy. Also no parents stayed. I'm sorry your having a terrible time it seems the norm nowadays
