To make a fuss - landlord one

So I am wfh today and had the front door open as the dog likes looking out at the parents collecting their children from the school next door. I'm sat in room at front just next to front door. Next thing a huge black van reverses onto my driveway. And the driver runs up to the front door and calls out. I dash out to hold the dog (he's on a long lead) and he says he's a friend of the landlord and they said he can park in the driveway to collect his kid from school. So I said well I don't know who you are. I didn't even recognize the name of the landlord as everything is done through an agency . He kept saying landlords name and I said I don't know who that is. So he insisted it was the landlord but she is away at the moment. Then he said he was her fella. So I say well I don't know you. And say I'm going to ring the agency. I locked the front door. I felt scared. He started shouting into the house who are you phoning . What's the problem . He was large and tall and quite aggressive. So I rang them but they were no help just said nobody was due to visit today and if I was worried I should phone the police.

He's gone now. I took a photo .

Not sure whether to just leave it. Or to send email to agency asking them to clarify with the landlord. Or will that just annoy her. I think it's a bit much ???

He might have parked there before as I work in the office some days so am not wfh every day.

Some parents collecting their children from school take liberties by inconsiderate parking. They’ll just park wherever they see a space no matter how inconvenient it is for others.
How does he know you’re renting the property?
Surely as you don’t have a dropped kerb he could just as easily park on the road outside your property.

vivainsomnia · 22/09/2024 08:44

Outrageous behaviour. Write a polite letter of complaint to the agency asking them to remind the landlord of what they are not allowed to do, including offering any space of the property to others.

Also. No landlord in their right mind evicts a tenant who pays their rent and doesn't trash their property.

Sadly that's not true

Northerngirl89 · 22/09/2024 08:49

I'm a landlord and I'd be furious if anyone I knew did this to one of my tenants. I would be grateful to be told and my temper would be at the van driver, not you the tenant!

Fwiw the landlord would be mad to evict you so I'm sure you'll be fine :)

RachTheAlpaca · 22/09/2024 08:49

Also another issue here is that the landlord needs to sort out a dropped kerb so you can use your driveway!

SometimesCalmPerson · 22/09/2024 09:01

I’m a landlord and wouldn’t be at all annoyed at a tenant raising this. At this point you have no idea if the landlord has done something wrong by telling people they can use his tenants driveway, or if this bloke is just a chancer who knows that your home is rented.

Mandoidi · 22/09/2024 09:07

Sorry this happened to you, it is very invasive, not to mention rude and the guy should not be parking there.

Why did he shout out towards your door? What did he shout?
And did he give a reason for parking there (did he pick up a child from the school)?

I agree with PP that this is probably a chancer

ivykaty44 · 22/09/2024 09:16

you rent the drive along with the property, you pay for it. The owner won’t be wanting to give a refund for the drive being used by a friend

Welshmonster · 22/09/2024 10:26

Just park in front of the driveway

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 22/09/2024 12:30

What a horrible incident. Tenants are so vulnerable to landlords getting the hump and evicting them, it's scandalous. Hopefully your landlord will not be one of these. As others have said, the landlord has no right to use or lend your driveway which you are renting with the rest of the house. The agent should have made this clear to her and asked to deal with this man if she did give permission. If she didn't agree and he's trying it on, and he tries to use the drive or behaves in an aggressive way again, you need to tell the police.

Yeh made me feel vulnerable. Like the house isn't mine. Well I know it isn't but ...!

It is your house though for now. You’re probably paying a lot of money to essentially make it your house for the duration of that time. Landlords need to understand that otherwise what is their function at all?! Because of the way the system is set up I can understand being nervous about making a fuss, but the landlord def can’t give permission for someone to use your driveway- that’s ludicrous. I’d ring the agency and make a complaint. Shelter are a good charity to contact if you wanted more advice. X

Has the landlord come back to you at all?

Sage71 · 23/09/2024 16:53

I don't park in the driveway as it doesn't have a ramped curb like the curb is pretty high to get onto it and it bumps the underneath of my car so I don't bother. But big vans can get up there more easily

If there is no dropped kerb it is actually a traffic offence. You may only cross the pavement where there is a dropped kerb.
