To ask if anyone has had a gastric sleeve?

So I’m due an inheritance in a few months and was debating getting a new car. I’ve just been chatting to a friend who had a gastric sleeve and it’s got me thinking. We’ve both struggled with our weight for years and she bit the bullet 12 months ago. She looks fantastic and had a really positive experience. She doesn’t regret it at all and would do it all over again.
Has anyone had one? Was your experience positive? Do you regret it?
It’s a huge commitment and I don’t want to (potentially) go into it having only heard one persons experience.

Thanks, I think that’s what I’m going to do. 😊

Have a look at the injectable weight loss board and read around about it. Lots of info there to help you decide.

i cannot believe this is still an option given the weightloss injections are now available. Why do a risky op when theres a safer and less costly option?

Because some people do need to feel it’s a permanent change to have the will power to lose weight. An injection can be stopped at anytime. I know I physically can not eat a large meal no matter how tasty it is. I know I could stop injections and my appetite will return to normal.

Plus Who said it’s safer and less risky? We do not know the long term effects of the injection for weightloss purposes as there are no longitudinal studies to support this. Bariatric surgery is risky but we have more of an idea of how it effects long term health than injections

Both options carry risks. Especially if a person has more weight to lose. Neither option should be taken without proper research

You could re stretch your stomach after these surgeries over time so you can eat more. I dont think in all cases bariatric surgery is permanent change either

Daschund · 18/09/2024 11:24

I found many WLS pages disingenuous at best over the risks involved. I had a similar op (not for weight loss) and suffered awful complications. When I asked questions about these I'd get banned or aggressive answers. In theory i should have had less risk because i wasn't overweight, in my thirties and no co-morbidities.
It was like they live in a bubbl, that nothing could go wrong.
Due to a blown duodenum stump (a known risk from WLS) I very nearly died and required a total gastrectomy. A lot of people on support pages on FB for subtotal and total gastrectomies are there due to complications of WLS. If you're considering it I'd recommend you go and ask some questions on those pages about the negatives, as well as the positive experiences you'll get here and other WLS forums.

This is certainly true although very difficult compared to stopping an injection. As I say I’m not against injections or surgery. As a nutritionist who’s had a gastric sleeve I know obesity is very complex and both options are better than doing nothing. Just like I know not everyone is the same and what works for one person might not work for another. That’s why both options should be researched

Thanks all, for your advice and opinions. I have about 8 stone to lose. I do have issues around food, I’m an emotional eater.
I’m starting to think that the sleeve may be too “permanent” for me.
I think I’ll go and speak to my GP and see if there is any help I can get with my issues around food and I’m going to look into the injections.

I would really suggest anyone wanting to lose weight try the injections. I put on a LOT of weight when I became chronically ill 15 years ago due to the meds and being inactive, it was a combo of things. I have dieted and tried everything and struggled so much. I am 4 weeks into injections and genuinely this is the first time where I feel im actually going to be able to lose the weight. Its amazing the change its made.

I had a doctor advocate for me to have injections but our county no longer does tier 3 weight management, its literally impossible to get that, so she was pushing for me to go to a different county but I decided to fund it myself and im so glad I did. I am changing my eating habits and already have had enough weight loss that im starting to see positives with my health. Yes there are potential side effects but there are bigger ones for me staying this size.

ObsidianTree · 18/09/2024 11:09

Nope. Go with Mounjaro. A less risky method.

With a gastric sleeve I have heard that it's difficult to get all the nutrients that you need so I wouldn't go with that without trying the non invasive method first.

Is it riskier? We don't have the long term effects of injections known.

I get all the nutrients I need. Perfect bloods after weight loss surgery.

anothermnuser123 · 18/09/2024 12:45

Wondered how long it would be before someone mentioned a code. I do hate that people start spamming the boards and PMing people as soon as injections are mentioned but MN have said if this happens and its reported, they do stop it, I just hope people report it as its just not necessary.

If you do want codes there is a whole thread for them and there is also a poster who has a great spreadsheet with the best prices for each level.

Sorry I was trying to be helpful x

TandyhatesAmanda · 18/09/2024 12:53

I do. I had it in Turkey as well, I am MN most hated. I was back at work after 5 days and the last 5 years have honestly been the best of my life. Everything is the same except I eat smaller portions and I am thin. Also I don't fancy alcohol any.more so it's been a huge win for me. It really want a huge drama for me as an experience but to be fair I was 100 kg down to 55 which I appreciate is very different to a lot of the people I met when I was in hospital who were already suffering from diabetes and other weight related issues, I had a quick recovery compared to some. I thank every day I have had it, i am about 100 years younger in my heart. I don't know why the NHS make such a huge issue about it, I had a breast lift a few years ago and that was way more painful and debilitating.

Crysti · 18/09/2024 14:04

@TandyhatesAmanda thats amazing! I’ve seriously considered it tbh but am giving the weight loss injections a go first. Surgery would be my absolute last resort as I hate even going to the dentist

Did you make a lot of lifestyle changes too?

TandyhatesAmanda · 18/09/2024 14:29

I stopped.drinking alcohol and eating crisps but generally eat less of whatever I want. Since I lost 50kg, u go to the gym, own a horse and am generally a busier more sociable person but only because I am not tired and embarrassed so much if you see what I mean. It's the best thing I ever did. I didn't have any.loose skin, I was really careful to.lose slowly with lots of protein and milk in the early days. I used to have PCOS and horrendous hormonal acne, now been discharged from consultants as I don't have either any more. I appreciate I am quite hung ho about surgery and not everyone is the same but for me, it's the single most important thing I ever did
