To wonder why everyone raves about cruises?

It has never appealed until recently. I thought it sounded like you are trapped to an itinery, on a long , boring journey woth only a day in each place and no space from fellow passengers but everyone I know seems to love them...i am seriously tempted.
So what is so good about a cruise and has anyone actually hated them?
Is the food as good as everyone says and is it relaxing? Apparently you don't get sea sick...is this true?

Interesting to read this thread from the PoV of the guests. DS and his gf are entertainers on cruise ships and we only get to hear his side of things...low pay and shitty shared cabins mostly!

We did - twice, sane cruise line.

Both tines norovirus was a thing, luckily we avoided it.

I liked that they remembered us the 2nd time (good hospitality/note taking!)- and they did take care of us.

We paid a surplus so we're able to dine and eat breakfast away from the criwds, had an amazing cabin and well worth the money in that regard.

Whilst the port stops sounded great, really they weren't- outside of town, to little time to really explore.

I'm not a pool person/sunbather - it was so overcrowded in those areas anyway.

Entertainment was top notch.

I have mixed feelings on cruises - won't rush back.

Yes, I saw the cabins in a documentary about cruise ship workers — it was like a cupboard with bunks!

I can’t imagine anything more dismal. Marooned on a giant prison hulk with a bunch of braying Tories, waiting to catch Norovirus from a sweaty prawn ring. No thanks.

Braying tories?
At first glance the most sizeable demographic on a ship would be northerners and the Scottish. Maybe they vote Tory but it’s hard to bray in a Yorkshire burr.

I think you are saying that middle class lefties don’t cruise. But actually a fair few have tried it. I always find someone who doesn’t fit the stereotype cruise passenger.

On the plus side they get to see loads of different places.

Ooh! We are booked to go on an Eastern Med cruise with Azura in the summer! It will be our second P&O cruise, but I have also done a Nile cruise before too.

Any tips for Azura please? Am worried we wont be able to get sun loungers on the 2 sea days. Can I ask what type of cabin you had?

@Meredusoleil We had a balcony on deck 11,B deck. Not overlooked from above, you do overlook the 2 levels of balconies below.
We didn't use the sun loungers, but there were messages about hogging sun loungers, anything left on there more than 30 minutes was removed to the" left sun lounger" table. Lots of people sunbathed on their balcony, depending which way the sun and ship were.
We had fixed dining in the Oriental, but we used the buffet for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, snacks; in fact any time we liked! Trick is to get a table first, then take it in turns to go and get food from the buffet. Believe me, I ate my way round the Med! The tables by the windows are the most popular, but there's plenty there, but obviously busy times are difficult. You can take buffet food out to deck 15, by the swimming pool, as there's tables there too. There's also a pizza place out there that opens at 10 I think, once when we got up too late for breakfast we had pizza fit breakfast (buffet closes at certain times to get ready for the next type of meal). There's a burger bar the other side of the pool but we didn't get chance to use that.

They do get to see lots of places which is lovely for a youngster from a small rural village. As an entertainer though he has afternoon rehearsals so has to be back at the ship early. He shares a tiny cabin allocated at random, and at 6 foot 3 it can be a bit of a squeeze. But it's a great life experience and one he has enjoyed on the whole.
