To think dry cleaners could manage Monday morning?

rottingparsnip · 16/09/2024 08:06

DP and I both need to wear smart shirts/blouses to work. To cut time from ironing, we take them to a dry cleaners/laundry place to be washed and ironed. £2.50 a shirt. We are in the office 5 days a week.

Dry Cleaners are open 7am-8pm,
Monday-Saturday

Friday Morning at 7am, I drop off our 10 shirts for the week, and ask to pick up the shirts at 8:00am on Monday morning.

Dry cleaners says this is not enough time. He can do Monday evening. I say sorry that’s no good for me as we need to wear two of them on Monday. He tells me it’s because he won’t have time to quality check because he sends them somewhere else to be done.

Am I being unreasonable? Usually dry cleaners manage this no problem whatsoever.

Buy a hand steamer , you can have them ready in no time yourself

Changeiscomingthisyear · 16/09/2024 08:08

Yes. Go to some where who can give you what you want or have 6 outfits instead if 5.

LaLaLouella · 16/09/2024 08:09

Well it's his business and this is the service he provides, nobody is being particularly unreasonable ....

Your choices are to either accept what he can do, go somewhere else or buy another couple of shirts so picking them up on Monday night isn't a problem

knittingdad · 16/09/2024 08:10

So he isn't doing any dry cleaning and is just a middleman?

I'd think a dry cleaner who was doing the work on site would be able to accommodate something like this, though I suppose they might charge extra.

Definitely worth finding a different dry cleaner who can provide the service you're looking for.

peachgreen · 16/09/2024 08:11

I mean, obviously you’re being unreasonable. You don’t know what else they might have had on, whether they had people working over the weekend etc etc. You don’t get to dictate how a business is run. They told you what they could do. If that doesn’t work for you, you’re free to take your business elsewhere.

MartinCrieffsLemon · 16/09/2024 08:11

If he's not doing them in house then obviously it will take longer

And even if he's wasn't, you don't know how much else has been dropped off with similar, or tighter, timescales.

Just take them somewhere else. Or buy a few extra shirts to keep in rotation so you have spare. Or leave with him and take 2 home and just wash and iron them for once...

dudsville · 16/09/2024 08:14

Whilst I agree there must be somewhere that provides this service, he's telling you he can't. He's being up front with expectation management.

No he cleans them and sends them out to be ironed which is fairly common.
@rottingparsnip you really need an extra shirt each as you haven't left enough time or use the service that you used previously that can do them in the timescale that you require

skilpadde · 16/09/2024 08:15

It sounds like you both need a 6th shirt.

skilpadde · 16/09/2024 08:17

Just realised you must both already have 6 shirts, given you're wearing it on Friday when 5 shirts are dropped off.

Get a 7th shirt!

TomatoSandwiches · 16/09/2024 08:21

Our laundry service does this but they are onsite and we also have 7 shirts per person incase there's an unexpected delay or incident.

FinallyHere · 16/09/2024 08:31

Find a better service, one whose operating model better matches your requirements.

We have a regular (albeit fortnightly) laundry service. We fill the laundry bag they provide, which is collected from our garage next to the front door by 07:00 Mondays. Washed and ironed or just ironed and returned before noon.

We put up a rail for the shirts on hangers to be hung up in on return

I have no idea how they manage this but it's quite wonderful. Originally Had to wait a while for a slot to become available and now would give up a lot before this service.

Edingril · 16/09/2024 08:38

It's not up to you decided, I could decide my butcher should really stock newspapers doesn't mean they will

pasturesgreen · 16/09/2024 08:43

This particular dry cleaner is telling you he can't do it in that time. It's inconsequential whether other dry cleaners can, he can't.

You either take your business elsewhere, or you buy a couple more shirts to add to the rotation (probably a smart move anyway).

nicknot · 16/09/2024 08:45

Am I being unreasonable?

Of course you are, you have that entitled attitude where you think a business model should change for you. If you don't like the service offered your options are to go elsewhere, do it yourself or pay someone to come round and do it.

PuppyMonkey · 16/09/2024 08:47

He was upfront with you. He might have numerous others ahead in the queue. If the service isn’t good enough, you take your business elsewhere.

xILikeJamx · 16/09/2024 08:48

Yes YABU

The concept that potentially hundreds of other people are also probably dropping things off and asking for them back first thing on Monday seems lost on you

Octopies · 16/09/2024 08:49

Surely it would be more unreasonable of him to tell you he can do it, then not deliver on time? It sounds like you need to find a different dry cleaner.

HamSad · 16/09/2024 08:53

YABU.

SleepGoalsJumped · 16/09/2024 09:00

Your problem is that you aren't taking them to a dry cleaner - you are taking them to a middle-man who will take them to a cleaner for you.
Find a different cleaning service that will do them on-site. Better still, given that shirts & blouses can be water-cleaned and don't need dry cleaning, you could book a local ironing service for every Saturday, set them off in your own washer on friday night with a timer set so that they finish at 8:00am and arrange for the ironing person to arrive at 8:00 and iron the shirts.

OR simply buy two more shirts so that you have a spare ready for Monday.

Maverickess · 16/09/2024 09:03

He can't offer you the service you want, so you find a solution yourself, doesn't matter if you think he should be able to do it or not, he's allowed to tell you a realistic timescale and you're allowed to go elsewhere if it doesn't suit you.
Doesn't matter why he can't do it, he can't. Getting bent out of shape because you can't have what you want doesn't change that. Not everything can go your way every time.

SoupDragon · 16/09/2024 09:04

Usually dry cleaners manage this no problem whatsoever.

so take them to the place that offers the service you want.

Wwyd2025 · 16/09/2024 09:08

Just buy more shirts surely?

permanently · 16/09/2024 09:10

He's not your Mum!
Can you launder two more shirts over the weekend?

Blackberriesandcobwebs · 16/09/2024 09:14

With all those carcinogenic chemicals in dry cleaning fluid I'd only use for a lined suit that's not directly touching my skin. Wash the shirts!
