To return this audible book because of the narrator?

I downloaded a Cathy Glass book but whoever is narrating it makes the little boy sound like Horrid Henry. She does his voice in such a whiny and annoying way that I'm struggling to take it seriously.

I'm thinking of returning it for a different book and then buying a hard copy of this one.

I'm sure that's allowed isn't it?

Just to add that I am fully functioning grown up who also didn't realise you could return-poor audible is probably reeling with the surge of monday am returns!

Is it on audible? You can return them easily and for any reason, just pick one of the options. I think one of them is actually that you have an issue with the narrations. Really not sure why you’ve started a thread on this. Do you often need help with such insignificant total non events?

You don’t want it audiobook so return the audiobook. Very strange.

Wrong side of the bed this morning?

You can return 2 a year I think. I had to return the Thursday Murder Club as to me, it was dire. I appreciate that others move it though! 😊

Rude.
OP didn't know.
Do you believe you know everything?

Sdpbody · 16/09/2024 10:34

I always return books if I can't listen to the narrator. Particularly American books as they sometimes do really robotic voices.

Jagley · 16/09/2024 10:55

I've had to return a couple of audible books because of a narrator. I'd listened to the sample and thought I liked them but listening to the book was different. Easy to return.

Side rant.
Audible books is not reading a book its listening to a book.
I understand that they are great for people that cant read or have problems with reading.
But listening to a book is not reading a book.

I`ll just wait now to be quoted and torn to shreds.

MrsMitford3 · 16/09/2024 11:16

@Mintgum

I too used to be a bit judgy about audiobooks.

I walk for about an hour every afternoon and it is a perfect way to listen to a book.
I don't usually have time during the day to read and generally if I start to read in the evening I fall asleep.

Why does it matter to you how someone enjoys a book?

I have read Rebecca several times but recently listened to it and def took different things away from it.
I think sometimes a good narrator enhances the story.

Maggie Gyllenhal narrating The Bell Jar was fantastic.

Sometimes speeding a book up really improves a narrator, particularly some of the America narrators...it does mean the book is finished more quickly though!
Yes easy enough to return for cash or credit, the only issue I had was not being able to return a 'free' book bought as a BOGOF deal. I don't know if audible still do, but they used to send you a link, to return a book If you left a pissy review, a long the lines of 'it looks like you didn't enjoy 'hunting trolls' by Herr. Y. Hands, would you like to return?'

Well since I got fed up with Radio 4, and when I'm doing boring tasks I like to listen to something, audiobooks and sometimes podcasts have filled the gap.
It's still good for my brain as I'm still processing language, just via the auditory rather than visual process. Sometimes I listen to a history or economic book and sometimes a story in a different language...go me!!
Sometimes I listen to music....
Unless you mean people should say listen instead of read? So semantics? In which case I kind of agree, technically it's listening, as you engage the ears not the eyes, but I think most folk would understand the meaning behind the sentence.

I agree that listening to an audio book is not reading a book, but I enjoy both.
With an audio book I can get so many mundane jobs done. I actually look forward to cleaning the house if I have a good audio book to listen to.
If I'm sat down however, I prefer to be reading a book as opposed to listening to one.

I don't have time to stop and read a book, but I do drive a lot of miles, so listening to books means I'm still engaging with literature.

I'm not sure it requires a rant
!

Yes I’ve returned a couple for that reason.

Jeez, give the woman a break. Perfectly reasonable question.

indurently · 16/09/2024 19:13

Which one is it? I was a bit Hmm when they decided to present a British born woman with a (bad) Jamaican accent - there was a tenuous link but it was a bit weird.

Cathy Glass has totally jumped the shark though.

PresidentBarklett · 16/09/2024 19:21

Just another one jumping on to give some side eye to @Ivehearditbothways . Just really fucking needlessly nasty.

Sunshineboo · 16/09/2024 19:24

I have returned a few books on audible because of the narrator. I am convinced these books have been narrated by AI

They tend to not want to have to have listened to it too much but if you haven't I found them to be very flexible.

Actually I listen to book if I want to enjoy it more. I read and listen to dozens of books a year. If I'm looking forward to a book I prefer to listen to it and savour it
