To ask what to do with the cake?

Just had a birthday recently and went to see family. Someone brought a massive cake, brought from supermarket, serves 20. The cake wasn't opened as lots of other food. They asked me to take it home (I tried to refuse as I have so much food already) but they wouldn't have it.

So now I have a huge chocolate cake. I'm not even keen on chocolate cake, but I have so much other cake from my birthday and it's stressing me out as I don't know how I can eat all this! I do have some issues with eating which doesn't help.

If I was going in to the office I could take it there but I'm not planning to this week. I don't have friends nearby to share it with/give it to.

I don't want to waste it either. What do I do with the cake.

If your in Northern Ireland I'll gladly take it off your hands Grin

FuzzyDiva · 15/09/2024 21:47

Do you have a nearby office or somewhere like a vet or GP surgery that you could drop it off for people there to enjoy?

Procrastinates · 15/09/2024 21:48

If it's not been opened then either donate it to a local care home or put an ad on your local FB page/next door app and I'm sure someone will happily relieve you of it.

Hayley1256 · 15/09/2024 21:48

Do you have any school age children that could take it into school?

MartinCrieffsLemon · 15/09/2024 21:48

Say on the local FB page you have a cake going free
It'll get snapped up

Or drop it into a local hospital/doctors/fire station as a thank you

OrwellianTimes · 15/09/2024 21:49

cut it up into slices, wrap in clingfilm and freeze it.

anxietyaardvark · 15/09/2024 21:49

Take it to your nearest homeless shelter or soup kitchen.

mynameiscalypso · 15/09/2024 21:50

Depending on what sort of cake it is and whether it has cream in it, I'd freeze it. Either as a whole if you think you'll use it in future or in slices for whenever you want a slice of cake.

Blackcountryexile · 15/09/2024 21:51

Is there a church or community centre locally that has a luncheon club or serves meals to vulnerable people? Or even offer it a food bank?

AgileGreenSeal · 15/09/2024 21:51

Bin it. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Honestly, if it’s causing you stress then it’s not worth “saving”.
You could donate in to the food bank if you can easily do that.

Sepoctnov · 15/09/2024 21:51

As long as it's unopened local FB or Nextdoor page.

No point freezing if you don't like chocolate cake.

And if she's not there but near me, I'll very happily take it. I really want a large chocolate cake now!

I agree with other suggestions. If unopened, donate to a local refuge, care home, or homeless accommodation. Or if none nearby, offer on Nextdoor or FB or similar. Or freeze it.

DoYouReally · 15/09/2024 21:55

Is there a women & children's refuge nearby?

Or a nursing home? Assisted living centre? Homeless shelter?

Newtrix · 15/09/2024 21:56

I cut it up and take to our neighbours. We only have 10 so I know they'd be super happy to get suprise cake!

BobbyBiscuits · 15/09/2024 21:57

You could make a chocolate trifle, soak the cake in booze and then add chocolate custard, bananas, caramel and cream. With chocolate shavings on top. I know that's probably not ideal but you could then freeze that and serve in portions. To make it a bit more exciting?

knittingdad · 15/09/2024 22:02

Cake freezes surprisingly well. I'd slice it up, separate the slices with baking paper and freeze in bags. Then it's easy to remove a slice at a time, leave it on a plate for half an hour or so to defrost, and eat when you want it.

My wife's birthday was nearly three months ago and we still have a fair bit of her birthday chocolate cheesecake to eat through.

Bjorkdidit · 15/09/2024 22:03

I'd get rid of it by one of the suggestions above. A giant cake from a supermarket is unlikely to be very nice and if you open it you won't be able to give it away.

soupfiend · 15/09/2024 22:07

I wouldnt be letting that slip away, I'd freeze it

Or make a chocolate brownie thing with it and freeze that

Then take it into work (saving lots for yourself of course) when you're next in, and it will be 'fresh'.

Im like you OP, if there is too much food I panic because I dont like waste but equally cant eat a lot, due to a myriad of stomach issues. So I freeze almost everything.

Arrivapercy · 15/09/2024 22:10

Donate it to:

Church lunch clubs or coffee mornings
Local toddler group
Offer it free to collect on a local group

Freeze it in slices in takeaway tubs.

Stainglasses · 15/09/2024 22:13

Well I would freeze it and be glad of it in the future. A glut of cakes sounds like a good problem to have but I do know gluts can be stressful.

I was so relieved when I managed to pick all the apples off our tree and froze them

kkneat · 15/09/2024 22:16

If unopened donate to food bank or pensioners luncheon club. I’m sure if won’t be hard to find somewhere to donate it.

Loooooo · 15/09/2024 22:17

I’d donate it. My local Tesco has a food bank so I’d put it in there. I wouldn’t bin it- seems v wasteful. Does it have a good sell by date? Shop cakes often do- might it last until you’re next in the office?

elderflowerspritzer · 15/09/2024 22:18

Just find a food bank/ homeless shelter/ soup kitchen etc near you and take it there. They will take it as long as it's still unopened.

ManyATrueWord · 15/09/2024 22:48

Either put yourself out enough to get it taken away or chuck it. It only has value to you if you like it and want it. Otherwise it's a big box of guilt - and why would you keep that?

Loonaandalf · 15/09/2024 22:50

Put it on Olio, it will be gone in an hour
