Locs for SEN children in London?

Posting for traffic sorry!

DD is 3 years old and has Autism. She’s also non verbal. Because of how much DD hates having her hair cainrowed (I plait it every 2 weeks), I think having her hair in locs would be the best way to maintain it. Trouble is, I can barely find anyone in London who will loc a 3 year old’s hair.

The other issue is that I know DD will hate the hairdressers and find it incredibly overstimulating so I wonder if anyone knows of a hairdresser who does locs at a home location? Alternatively, someone who will possibly come to our house. Even if they don’t so locs and just standard braiding, please let me know so that I can check them out!!

I’ve tried to look for SEN friendly Afro/Caribbean hairdressers but it’s like that doesn’t exist?! Pls help🥹

Have you got a local FB group for parent carers? Try asking in there for recommendations. That's how I found an SEN-friendly barber for my son.

Or check out the social media pages of Black SEN Mamas - I heard their founder speaking on Woman's Hour this week and if they run an FB group then that would be a great place to ask.

@BoobsOnTheMoon I honestly have no clue about local groups on FB but I’ll have a look and join some now. I’ve also never heard of Black SEN Mamas so thank you for the link!

I have had so much advice/info/support from my local area FB groups. As your DD gets to school age you'll find them really useful to get opinions on schools etc too, and lots of them organise stuff like exclusive use of soft plays and out of hours museum trips for SEND families which have been amazing for us.

There’s no SEND support groups on FB in my area, I’ve just had a look. There’s local groups that have like 500 followers and most are just people trying to sell things. I’ll keep on looking but for now, the aim is to locate a hairdresser

Where in London are you OP? I have a few contacts that would posdibly visit you at home and do this?

bryceQ · 15/09/2024 18:02

There are some London autism groups I would ask on there for someone who comes to the house. Good luck

Try some friendly stalking. Going to SEN sessions and approaching parents of kids with their hair done. Sessions such as soft play, gymnastics, athletics that sort of stuff.

Haha I hear it, well not there then haha but deffo black centred-spaces. I see there was a comment with a fb group, there are quite a few that are well suited so hopefully once you get there that’ll help and it’ll roll on from there
