No speed limit signs?

Lonelyandweird · 15/09/2024 15:09

I'm quite confused about the speed on a dual carriageway that I regularly drive. There are no speed limit signs on that side of the dual carriageway, but on the opposite side, there are the national speed limit signs, so I've always thought that the other side would also be 70mph. However, recently, I've been questioning what the actual speed limit is because I've never actually seen any speed limit signs on that side of the dual. I've been on Google, and it's telling me that most dual carriageways are 70mph. However, there's conflicting information. I've read it's 30 mph if no signs are visible. Does anyone know what the speed limit would be if the opposite side of the dual carriageway has national speed limit signs?

Thirty fucking 4 in a 30 Angry

You'd be thinking differently if someone ran over your kid doing thirty fucking four in a 30
But as it's you, go ahead and be cross

Why would it be 30mph on a dual carriageway?

I understand if there are street lights but otherwise why would you assume that? Confused

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 16/09/2024 07:28

30mph is only the default in a built up area where there are regular street lights set (something like 100 or 200 yds) apart diagonally.

Most duel carriageways are either 50 or 70mph.

If you have an iphone set your route on apple maps and when you get to the area it will show you the speed limit.

This is the answer. If there's no speed limit sign after the roundabout then the speed limit is the same as before the roundabout.

The speed limit signs after a roundabout can be easy to miss. I don't think it would hurt for them to use a few extra signs as reminders.

I agree with this too. I did do my test nearly 20 years ago though but I was always told if there is no new speed limit sign when you enter a new road it’s because it’s the same speed limit as the road you’ve entered from.

I hate roads like that. I wish they'd make it idiot proof.

You can get 20mph dual carriageways. Why would you assume that you couldn't get 30mph ones?

They can't. Someone always provides a better idiot.

Have you read the Highway Code? Tried google?
Have you passed your test?

I used Google maps like someone above suggested. It was showing the road as 50 mph. And yes, I have passed my test

@Meerkat9 where are there 20mph dual carriageways? I've genuinely never heard of (or seen those) in my entire life.

Theunamedcat · 17/09/2024 07:17

We have ambiguous roads over here in the Midlands we also have roads where they change the speed from 40mph to 30mph and don't bother putting any signs up they then set the speed camera up apparently an announcement in "the local paper" is sufficient

They just don't believe in speed signs

On my (aham) speed awareness course they said National Speed Limit = N S L ... No Signs or Lights. So if there are no signs or lights its the nsl (sp 60 or 70 depending on if on a dual carriageway), if there are lights but no signs its 30. Obviously if there are signs then you go by those. Hoping I've remembered it correctly 😄

This sounds right, with one addition: if you're in Wales then the default speed limit in areas with street lighting is now 20 mph.

Weird post. There are loads of 30 mph dual carriageways in towns and cities all over the country. Yes, there will be (should be) signs and/or street lighting, but they're not some weird rarity. Here's one round the corner from my house.

If you're driving in a 30 mph limit and pass the point where a 40 mph sign used to be, but it's not there now, then that should be a big clue. If the speed limit changes there'll be a sign. Generally no sign = the limit stays the same.

More cross at myself tbh, I was distracted and going downhill. I wouldn’t have been, but as the course instructor said, everyone is human, you didn’t kill or injure anyone learn from it, and don’t let it define you.

There is one in Sunderland City centre. Bloody annoying, no one goes 20 on it so when you do someone always ends up right up your arse.

Redhothoochycoocher · 17/09/2024 20:50

30 mph of street light and 60 if none when there are no signs

sunsetsandboardwalks · 17/09/2024 22:03

@CasperGutman I've genuinely never seen a road like that before be described as a dual carriageway 🤷‍♀️

The definition of a dual carriage way is if it is separated by a central reservation.

Most people think it’s a road with more than one lane going in the same direction.

Indeed. And the road I posted has a central reservation (legal definition) and also has two lanes in each direction (definition as commonly misunderstood). I can't imagine why it wouldn't be thought of as a dual carriageway.

OldTinHat · 18/09/2024 06:27

@Marmite27 Hahaha, me too! 34 in a 30 and had to do a speed awareness course last year. First time in 36yrs of driving. Sigh...
