to have a bonfire in the garden?

Just that really - is it ok to have a bonfire in my garden? When we were kids we used to have bonfires quite often, but I'm not sure if it's ok any more. I'm thinking that if we did it in the evening, when people will have brought their washing in, it's not really anti-social at all. I could even pop round to the nearest neighbours to warn them/ask if they have a problem with it, if necessary.

Thoughts?

Just go for it. I used to use a garden bin with a lid for burning random stuff. It sometimes pissed off next door but he was a twat and deserved it.

I live near someone whose house chimney has started to reek to high heaven recently - not 100% sure why but I see the man cutting up old pallets and wood regularly. A garden bonfire smell is even worse than that. It permeates everything.
It's bad for the environment and health and is ridiculously selfish.

Nobody deserves to have their air polluted.

I don’t see much difference from having a barbecue with charcoal (or worse, wanker over the back who uses lighter fluid or something else horrible to light his) or cooking very strong smelling food with the windows wide open. A one off, I’d say follow your council guidelines, warn your neighbours, don’t do it on a nice day. My neighbour did it for about 4 days all day until another neighbour complained to the council, he was burning stuff from the house he was gutting, could have been asbestos, god knows what, he had no idea.

If its legal its legal.

I love the smell of bonfires. No problem as far as I’m concerned. I would have it late afternoon/early evening.

Same. If it's dry garden waste it smells nice.

Barbecues are antisocial and polluting too.

I was replying to the assertion that pollution is okay because someone 'deserved' it.

lazyarse123 · 15/09/2024 16:14

Please don't. As for pp suggesting fire pits don't do that either. Our neighbours have a fire pit and it stinks our house out. Antisocial things.

Not sure why you felt the need to attack me for pointing out factual information.

Ablondiebutagoody · 15/09/2024 16:19

I love a fire. Spark it up!

Ohthatsabitshit · 15/09/2024 16:21

I love bonfires and the smell of woodsmoke.

Attacking you? No I wasn't. You posted that both bonfires and barbecues are antisocial and polluting. I pointed out that they're also really bloody fun and lots of people love them. No need to get so irate.

Chamone · 15/09/2024 16:21

Wait til next door has got a full line of washing out.

Wolfpa · 15/09/2024 16:22

What are you thinking of burning on it? Random junk is never ok, untreated wood is fine whenever.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 15/09/2024 16:23

Ooh lovely - just as long as everyone's washing is in - top tip - wrap up some potatoes in fool and chuck em on to - best baked potatoes ever!

You started with 'God you must be loads of fun' - that's attacking someone.
You're also now calling me 'irate'.
I've simply posted factual information, as have others.

It isn't factual, though. How on earth are bonfires and barbecues antisocial? People love them. Maybe if there's a massive party of people shouting and screaming, but burning some leaves or grilling some fish is hardly the same thing.

Maybe not fabulous for the air, but then neither is driving a car. It's not like it's burning 12 hours a day, every day.

They are antisocial because of the pollution they create, never mind the strong smell. This is factual and common knowledge.
Some people might love them but loads of people really don't love them at all.
There was no need to conclude that a person isn't 'fun' just because they don't like the same things as you.

Chamone · 15/09/2024 16:35

Everything causes pollution 1 way or another so deal with it. An occasional bonfire is nothing compared to those multi fuel stoves which every1 is buying these days.

ThatMakesSense · 15/09/2024 16:35

Don't do if there is no wind - you'll stink out the neighbours

And presumably no need to conclude that something is intrinsically “antisocial” because you don’t like it?

I suppose you never drive a car, take a taxi, never use planes, etc? Do you cycle everywhere?

It's a little bonfire. No one is burning toxic waste.

I can't imagine getting upset about a bloody barbecue.

FairyMeriy · 15/09/2024 16:36

Christ, don’t be that bad head neighbour. You don’t need a bonfire and as other have pointed out, it’s likely to be the last dry, nice sunny weekend.

I can still smell when a fire is outside as it still steeps through despite closed windows. Think of your neighbours.
