He used all the sugar

AIBU to be raging? (Slightly lighthearted post, but only very slightly)

Got up this morning to make myself a coffee, quite literally my favourite time of day is when I get to sit down and take that first sip.

Anyway, I open the pot or sugar and it seems my teenage son has used it all and not told me we need to buy more 😫

AIBU to be raging? I have absolutely no idea how many cups of tea he drank yesterday or frankly how much sugar he must have used because I didn't notice it being low when I made my coffee yesterday morning.

The shop doesn't open until 9am so now I'm coffee-less and annoyed 🙄

I'm considering the honey suggestion, although DP has just popped his head in and said he will go to the shop when it opens.

My coffee is in sight 😂🥳

Definitely try honey, it's much better than sugar. And I drink 25 tea and coffees a day with 2 sugars each🤭 but if I've got honey I always use that. Your DP is obviously a star offering to get your sugar, or he knows he'll have a monster on his hands if you don't get your caffeine fix🤣🤣🤣

First world problems

Oh I didn't know there is a rule that one can only create threads pontificating about really serious topics.

Well that's us told.

pictoosh · 15/09/2024 08:49

I come here for the first world problems.

So talk us through how you would stop him?

You see your 16 year old putting sugar in his tea. What happens next?

I think we could use your advice.

Well obviously the teenager will simply go, oops sorry, you're right, discard the sugary tea and never do it again. It's that straightforward, everyone knows.

I don't understand drams like this. Whybis the sugar in the "pot" the only sugar in the house. I always have the pot plus an unopened bag. The same applies for anything with a long shelf life. The one in use and a spare. It just makes life smoother, no last minute trips to the shop for anything.

If he's only been using in for drinks (not baking) it must have been lowish yesterday.

Storage? Anything that comes in paper bags should ideally be transferred to a hard plastic or glass container at home to reduce the risk of pest infestations, so you end up with two jars of the same stuff and that gets silly.

Having seen infestations of hundreds of food moths, ants, weevils and a few dozen mice (not all in the same house or even the same person!) will make you think twice about leaving sugar in a bag in the back of a cupboard "for later" - same goes for anything with a relatively long shelf life. Some people simply don't have the storage space to start with, or the money to keep spare.

Take your pick 🤷

I started my sugar free parenting journey when my kids were about 1.

I sat them in front of the sugar jar and just gave them a little electric shock every time they touched it.

15 years later they are too scared to go near sugar.

Easy.

Well it seems to have worked OK for me for 30 years 😆

Are you still breastfeeding a 16yo @MotherOfABoobAddict ?

DiscoBeat · 15/09/2024 09:08

I can understand your annoyance but the way I shop is always having a spare of everything, especially when jars get low. Since doing that I never actually run out of anything!

First world problems

Having lived in many non first world countries I can confirm that teenagers are universally thoughtless and that this sort of thing happens across the world.

Also being annoyed by petty thing is allowed and happens everywhere. It is equally annoying to have no sugar for your favourite drink in Angola as it is in the UK.

HelenWheels · 15/09/2024 09:10

i had no lurpak yesterday,
dh finished it all!
i had to have cereal for breakfast and THEN go to the shops to buy lurpak and have a boiled egg and soldiers for lunch!
what a day

What an insightful and thought provoking comment. I shall ponder it for the rest of the day.

Definitely have a spare stash of sugar lumps somewhere (less messy than loose sugar). I personally don’t take sugar or milk in my tea/coffee but can understand your disappointment at that anticipated first cup.

BiscuitlyBoyle · 15/09/2024 09:13

I have cereal a couple of times a week. DH does not, he has his own oat based cereal because he doesn’t like my crunchy nut cornflakes, but he bloody eats them all! Every time he goes into the kitchen he grabs a handful. When I go to eat my cereal in the morning for breakfast there is none left! Granted I have a back up box but that’s not the point.

MissEloiseBridgerton · 15/09/2024 09:13

A crime punishable by death in our house. We will limit the kids bedtime milk to make sure there is enough milk left for our coffees in the morning 🤣 and we just buy milk every other day so it's impossible to run out.

dizzydizzydizzy · 15/09/2024 09:14

I would be ready to commit murder. When my coffee machine broke down, I couldn't cope and had to order in a coffee every day until new machine came .

First world problems

As are most of people's problems given we live in a "first world" country.

Maurepas · 15/09/2024 09:37

Give up sugar - so bad! I gave it up during the Three Day Week (as it was known) in 70s because there wasn't any sugar!

Sugarfreerage · 15/09/2024 09:44

@Maurepas that sounds like an awful time, I'm glad I wasn't alive 😂

Honestly I have one coffee a day with two lovely little teaspoons of sugar. I'm not giving it up 😂

ParisGellerFTW · 15/09/2024 09:45

I always have a few sachets from cafes for this eventuality. Always have a few in my handbags or coat pockets.

Teenagers are so annoying. Mine has eaten my pesto and not told me. I buy endless pasta sauces for him and he knows fine well that that one type of pesto is the one I like and I want it to stay in the cupboard so it's there when I fancy it. Sigh

HelenWheels · 15/09/2024 09:59

my ds used to put my cherry tomatoes in his spaghetti bolognaise or in fact anything he was cooking!
Angry

Now THIS is criminal. How DARE he use up the morning milk?!
Oooh I'd go ballistic.

I know. Verging on LTB..

roseymoira · 15/09/2024 10:10

He's drinking tea? Put a stop to that straight away, he should be out robbing shops and intimidating women like the rest of them

LoveSandbanks · 15/09/2024 10:27

TealTraybake · 15/09/2024 08:27

Ohhh like the other week. I came downstairs for my frothy milky coffee in the morning, in my favourite mug. No milk left. Husband had used it all eating late night cereal. Devastated!

I’ve had my neighbour drop round milk in her pyjamas in times of crisis like this.
