If you just started a new job and a colleague asks how old you are?

poppyzbrite4 · 13/09/2024 23:56

Yes I would mind.

K37529 · 13/09/2024 23:57

No

clarinsjourney · 13/09/2024 23:58

No, never understood why people are funny about age.

Scutterbug · 13/09/2024 23:58

No I wouldn’t mind at all.

Positivenancy · 13/09/2024 23:59

It usually happens to me on within the first hour or so of talking to someone, general conversation around my dc and their ages and my life so far is always met with “oh my god how is that possible what age are you!? I’m nearly 40 and everyone things is at least 10 years younger 😂😂 I don’t mind at all

MarkingBad · 13/09/2024 23:59

No not at all

Djmaggie · 14/09/2024 00:00

No, not at all. It’s just general conversation.
However, not something I would ask myself.

LoftyPeachSnake · 14/09/2024 00:00

No, I wouldn't care. Age is just a number.

MummaEllie · 14/09/2024 00:01

No

Clammyclam · 14/09/2024 00:01

No not at all

Mmhmmn · 14/09/2024 00:01

Nope, not at all.

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/09/2024 00:01

Wouldn’t bother me in the least.

OnYourTogs · 14/09/2024 00:02

I would never ask someone because I know lots of people are sensitive about age, but I wouldn't mind being asked.

Neveranynamesleft · 14/09/2024 00:02

No. Why do you ask and why does it bother you ?

BananaGrapeMelon · 14/09/2024 00:03

I wouldn't mind exactly, but I would be surprised. No one at work has ever asked my age and I've been there 10 years!

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 14/09/2024 00:03

Maybe. I’d be a bit put off if that’s what they asked first off.

HarelessMiffy · 14/09/2024 00:06

I don't mind. They usually ask when I mention my children and people expect them to be young, but they're late teens. Apparently I look like I could be ten years younger it's the fat that pushes out the wrinkles

cherish123 · 14/09/2024 00:08

No

JollyRanger · 14/09/2024 00:09

Thanks everyone. Just curious. I'm early 20s. It didn't follow any conversation about children or anything, they just asked. I hope it's not because they think I might be incompetent because I'm younger than them or something like that. It's an admin role

Hmm then it depends who is asking, why and in what tone?

LateMumma · 14/09/2024 00:13

No. I'm interested in other peoples age and their relative life experience

Aquamarine1029 · 14/09/2024 00:15

I wouldn't be impressed. Not because I care if people know my age, but because an adult should have enough sense of decorum to know not to ask that question in a work environment when you have just met a colleague. It displays poor judgement.

MummaEllie · 14/09/2024 00:15

@JollyRanger I wouldn't think to much about it unless they start to make you feel uncomfortable while your working.

We have a girl at work who is obsessed with asking everyone new how old they are so she can see if she's still the 'baby' of the group. She quite likes being the youngest and it's nothing sinister, she just likes to know.
Some people also find it as an icebreaker / conversion starter.

Good luck in your new job

Sweetnessandbite · 14/09/2024 00:15

I was brought up being told that it is rude to ask about age, so I never do. There are three ladies at my work that repeatedly ask everyone their age. It bugs me but not sure why.

Don't care. My date of birth is a matter of public record.
