AIBU to think it's time to make misogyny an jmprisonable crime?

After reading this horrendous article about religious groups spending vast amounts to remove women's rights?

Isn't it time to make these people accountable and punish them?

I'm trying to imagine the absolute uproar if this was targeted at another group that regularly encounters oppression. Yet this will be shrugged off by most and ignored.

Incitement to religious hatred is a crime so why isn't incitement to hate women?

It's horrendous but unsurprising. Religious conservatives uphold misogyny and are homophobic shocker.

Religion has always done this, exerted influence and put money into upholding its regressive values.

SleepToad · 11/09/2024 21:41

The laws in this country are getting weirder and weirder. You can say that people should get their throats cut, but your defence is you didn't want it too happen. But suggest that a religion should be banned and can be sent to prison.
But in this case I agree that it should be added as part of a review of what is not legal. All hate speech laws need a thorough review.
However, I don't see this or any other government will do it

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 11/09/2024 21:42

You'd need to make it illegal in the first place. Misogyny isn't categorised as a hate crime

Over40Overdating · 11/09/2024 21:43

It would be impossible to enshrine because the people fighting hardest against it would be women, trying to save their arses of their male relatives whilst shouting NAMALT.

What could happen if the labour gvt get their way (some women have penises and all that), is that women could end up being accused of being misogynistic - if they eg. call a trans woman (a man), a man. 😑

The Scottish guy alluded to this but he’s gone now, thank goodness.

Prison’s are overcrowded and they’re letting violent, abusive domestic abusers out.

Until we have a government that cares about women you’ve no chance.

Transwomen will be automatically protected by any misogyny legislation, because that's how hate crime legislation works. It protects absolutely everyone regardless of status.

It isn't a question of sitting down and determining who is, or is not included/excluded, because hate aggravators are not defined by the status of the victim, but the perception of the perpetrator.

It's why it's still an Islamophobic hate crime if someone attacks Hindus in the belief they are Muslims, or attacks and abuses two heterosexual women holding hands because they are perceived to be homosexual, etc etc. It doesn't stop being a hate-aggravated crime just because the offender was mistaken about the status of the victim.

Misogyny as a Hate aggravating factor is still in the pipeline in Scotland, thank goodness, and Labour have indicated it's a priority for them in England & Wales too.

The supposed criminalisation of "misgendering" you are alluding to was always a complete nonsense and has been proven as such.

Nobody who acts against trans identified males is under the impression they are women. It's not a case of mistaken identity.

Define "acts against". I am unsure precisely which point you are making here.

TealTraybake · 11/09/2024 23:42

@XDownwiththissortofthingX you're waffling.

‘Misogyny (/mɪˈsɒdʒɪni/) is hatred of, contempt for, or prejudice against women or girls. It is a form of sexism that can keep women at a lower social status than men, thus maintaining the social roles of patriarchy’

My concern is that a woman, who refuses to treat a man as a woman, when a man insists he is a woman, could be accused of being a misogynist. For example not wanting the male to join her all female swimming group.

But I’m pretty sure you didn’t really need me to spell that out for you.

Where is the criminal offence here?

And fwiw, I didn't actually ask you to spell anything out.

Improbablywrong · 11/09/2024 23:47

I absolute 100% agree it should be imprisonable. But given that you can commit a fair amount of crime in the UK and still not be imprisoned, sadly, it won’t ever happen.

Edingril · 11/09/2024 23:47

Well if it was reversed 99% of the posters on here would be with something, why does it only work one way?

AGirlInACountrySong · 11/09/2024 23:49

Er no. There's no space in prisons

LargeSquareRock · 11/09/2024 23:52

We all know the first person charged under any new misogyny laws will be a woman saying no to a man in a dress.

Challenges the presence of trans identified males in single sex (female) toilets, changing rooms, hospital wards, sports teams, social groups etc etc. That will no doubt become a crime if misogyny became an offence. As PP said, the first person to be charged under any misogyny law would be a woman defending her right to single sex space.

GeneralPeter · 12/09/2024 08:39

Hard no.

No in principle: criminalizing beliefs is totalitarian, and should be opposed everywhere and always.

No in practice: how many of the items in the screenshot (which is from the report the article is based on) do you agree with? Even if nil, it should not be illegal to hold those views, let alone imprisonable.

As for lobbying: we should be extremely wary of criminalizing lobbying based on the viewpoint (not methods) of the lobbyist.

It's wrong when conservatives do it and it's wrong when progressives do it too.

This.

Even anti misogyny laws would turn out to be detrimental for women.

What a fucking mess we are in 😔

Nowordsformethanks · 12/09/2024 08:58

Not with the way Misogyny is thrown about here - you'd have to clearly define Misogyny first (for those who obviously don't know) and have people stick to it.

The crimes would have to be spelt out to avoid people like some mumsnet posters braying for blood because... (well, go to any thread where a man is accused of breathing misogyny and a woman is accused of "misogyny" for being in support...a.k.a having a different opinion that doesn't automatically make the woman a victim).

pigletinthewoods · 12/09/2024 09:00

I doubt what they’re doing is so much worse than the TRA organisations that actively promote scarring children for life.

Nobody should be imprisoned for their beliefs.

Disclaimer: I was born in what used to be the USRR and seen where it leads to.

RedToothBrush · 12/09/2024 09:04

Where are we going to put all these additional criminals.

Will there be many men left?!
