To think that with over 1million pensioners in poverty, removing the WFA makes Labour the nasty party, who tell blatant lies?

1000 replies

TealTraybake · 11/09/2024 20:20

And hypocritical lies at that. Just a few months ago Labour ‘vowed to be the party for pensioners’

‘Nearly 1 million people aged over 66 in the UK are living in deprivation, according to government statistics, the highest number since comparable records began.
Labour, which analysed figures from Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) records, has vowed to be the party for pensioners, with plans to insulate millions of homes and reduce energy bills. It has also “committed to retaining” the triple lock which guarantees annual rises to the state pension’

I understand the WFA should be means tested - but the current threshold is far too low. Food prices have gone up. Energy prices have gone up. Some pensioners need that WFA 🥺.

Separate report suggests number of people living in poverty aged between 60 and pension age has tripled under Tories

Wow. It’s shocking they’ve all plunged into poverty in what, a matter of weeks. Can’t be anything that happened years before.

Well, exactly. They got the WFA the years before! Not difficult…

sunbum · 11/09/2024 22:15

Im no fan of this labour government, in fact i cant stand them, but it seems absolutely ridiculous to me to give multi millionaires over 65 or whatever it is or even just wealthy people 300 quid they dont want or need, when that money could be used to help other people, so it seems fine to me to makes this means tested.

My mum isnt wealthy but she has 2 pensions and has paid off her mortgage. She doesnt wam or need the payment. My friend from a hobby group in his late seveties is a retired finance director and used to give it to charity. Another is a retired police office on a good pension and says he doesnt want or need it.

Won't the people who would struggle and do need the payment mostly qualify for it anyway?

EasternStandard · 11/09/2024 22:15

gamerchick · 11/09/2024 22:13

Tbh, having had it rammed down our throats over and over on a daily basis. I couldn't give a fuck that it's been taken away.

Even for a pensioner on £12k scared about being unable to pay their bills and or turning on the heating at all this winter? Maybe at increased risk from a fall

You've accessed too much online stuff or too much press and now couldn't give a fuck about them either?

Mooneywoo · 11/09/2024 22:19

Putting · 11/09/2024 21:54

Do you think someone on £60k should qualify for means-tested benefits when someone on £12k doesn’t?

Well considering the 60k salary has a family to support, a full mortgage to pay or full rent, food for more people, children to clothe, non subsidised transport to pay for in order to commute, no council tax discount, no free prescriptions etc maybe the person raising a family on 3.5k per month should be eligible for a wfa! If 1k income after housing isn’t enough for 1 person then 3.5k before housing can’t be enough for 4, right?

Csdrassticcallychanginngnnammes · 11/09/2024 22:19

I must admit I am shocked by Labour. I thought they were the party who looks after the sick, disabled, vulnerable and elderly. It would seem I was mistaken. They appear to be money grabbing for their own bills, whilst taking from the elderly. Who is next? It’s disgusting.

Kelly51 · 11/09/2024 22:20

Why just pensioners? disabled people could do with a WFA, always the poor pensioners.

I think child benefit should be universal as it was in the past, why not? People who pay more tax should be entitled to benefits too & we have major economic issues in this country because housing costs are far too high vs salary & childcare costs are prohibitive.

Ni it shouldn't be. And should be restricted to claiming for two children for everyone.

No they won't. Only those who are in receipt of pension credit I.e living on less than £12,000 will receive the winter fuel allowance. This means that pensioners who may only be living on an income of pennies above this threshold won't receive it.

Evilartsgrad · 11/09/2024 22:22

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 11/09/2024 20:32

It’s means tested. The poorest will get it.
Why should people like my aunt and uncle with literally hundreds of thousands in the bank get a winter fuel payment- crazy!

But the still pretty poor won't. Honestly your aunt and uncle are utterly irrelevant.

This. The government have just demonstrated that there isn't a bar that is too low for them to stoop to. If they can do this to pensioners what will they do to everyone else....

JohnTheRevelator · 11/09/2024 22:26

I must admit that I thought when I first heard the news,I was rather shocked,as I'd always thought of labour as being the party who support the less well off in our society. But then I thought, well it makes a bloody change for it not to be the sick and disabled in the firing line! Although I'm probably speaking too soon by saying that. I'm fully expecting RR to train her sights on them next.

Julen7 · 11/09/2024 22:26

I fear they might scrap the 25% single person’s council tax discount in the budget so widowed pensioners would also be affected by that (as would many others)

I think they are going to get rid of the council tax single person discount, which is going to affect a lot of vulnerable groups

Nobody needs to "bash labour" when we can all see the despicable cuts they are making impacting our most vulnerable people. This isn't bashing, it's disgust at what we can see them doing and clearly see that they don't have a conscience about who else they go after next...

Next target likely be widowed pensioners and single parents then.

Labour are doing short term popularist thinking? This seems at odds with the 'bashing' part, do you mean your party?

How can people concerned about elderly just on the basic state pension be that?

I was trying to click on a different thread, shit jumps about.

I have a pal who's retired. He's got pensions that mean he'll be very comfortable for the rest of his life and it's all he's whinging about. Apparently he's paid on all his life, this is his due, an acknowledgement that he's paid in and to get something back. He doesn't actually need the bugger.

Now I'm wondering if Tories get paid to whinge on here. Might be a nice little earner for those elderly souls who'll be donning the oodie this winter.

Ah the good old Labour faithful. Whinging about threads they trip on to

No thought to any pensioner as Starmer and Reeves have cut payments to people on £12k

Whatever it is from Labour you'll sign up to it

Absolutely. Like moths to a flame.

Labour voters who are now predominantly middle classes, will vehemently defend any Labour policy no matter how detrimental it is to some sections of society, counter arguing it with what the tories did instead.
