My son decided that after GCSE's he wanted to go to College, this has been his first week and he has told me today that he feels that he has made a big mistake.

He is not hugely academic although got a healthy set of GCSE's and says that he now wishes he had gone to Sixth form and done BTECH Applied Sciences plus another. A BTECH would suit him as there is a lot of coursework which plays to his strengths. The Sixth form at his old school went back last week. Surely it is too late to change now?

We had a lot going on at the time of GCSE's, we had a sudden death in the family and he was present. This was someone he loved very much and his first experience of death - right in front of him. We had 5 weeks of post mortems around the time of application and the beginning of exams. I feel that the circumstances clouded his judgement at the time - in fact the whole period feels like a daze.
Is it too late now?

No I don’t think it’s too late yet but you must contact the school quickly and see what they say. They may not have space in the course for example.

Ask the sixth form and see what they said it’s not too late to inquire at least as to whether it is possible

Dreamcatchergirl · 11/09/2024 18:59

Call them tomorrow and see if you can get a place.

Definitely not too late

Definitely not too late. Most allow until end of September. Make some enquires. also ask at his college if they offer the BTech

Not too late but must be done ASAP or he’ll miss too much. Another week and it’s getting to be too late.

In the schools with Sixth Forms I've worked in,students were allowed to join until October half term.
They had to bring any coursework or notes with them after half term .
To be fair ,after one week, the only thing they'll have done is write their names on their folders.
The first week was all about orientation ,behaviour and work expectations.
Lectures/lessons introduced the AO of the various exam boards ,dates of any assessments etc into diaries or organisers.

Phone the sixth form tomorrow. More pupils means more money! If there’s any way at all that he can still start, they’ll snap him up.

caringcarer · 11/09/2024 19:14

Not too late if the Sixth Form still have a space.

My DS started 6th form last week then found out about a college course that was much more his specialty
He sorted his own interview/audition (music course) and has now enrolled and loves it

I’m sure it’ll be no problem for your lad

TeenToTwenties · 11/09/2024 19:24

Not too late, but get on with it.

Thanks so much for everyones messages. I've emailed the school and will phone them in the morning. I had a feeling that this college course wouldn't be for him but he was adamant that it was. Sometimes you have to take a step back and let them work things out for themselves....but likewise I don't want the whole acamedic year to be a write off. Fingers crossed there will be spaces.

From what I remember of my daughter starting 6th form last year there is a lot of movement in the first two weeks, even kids who have made it into the school will sometimes try out different courses for the first couple of weeks before deciding what they want. My daughter is doing two BTECs and an A Level, the BTECs are so suited to her needs and she's doing so well.

I’ve done lots of work with my sixth formers! No time to faff about, we get stuck in straight away. It doesn’t mean a student can’t catch up though.
