Term has only started and I don’t know if they need laptops or how they usually so their homework (which doesn’t seem to have started).

We do not have a family computer. It seems inappropriate to have a child use my expensive work laptop on a regular basis for homework. If something happens to it, like it has water spilt on it, I would have to explain to my work and that would be mortifying and look unprofessional.

It’s probably not permitted by your employer to let anyone other than you use it. They would be logged in as you, which is generally against company code of conduct. It’s a data security and privacy risk. Not worth it. Find out what is required, which would likely be a Chromebook, and see what you can find secondhand if needed.

I have DC in high school in later years. We have one but they rarely use it. Maybe once a year if they need to do a powerpoint. The rest apps for maths science and english they prefer to do on their phone.

I'd be annoyed if id bought it only for that purpose and i wasn't cash rich.

Maybe wait until its becoming an issue before taking the plunge?
