I’m lucky enough to have got to nearly the age of 47 with no toothaches. Today I have woken up with a slightly uncomfortable feeling in my cheek/jaw and a swollen face on one side, not massively bad, enough to make me look like a hamster and the pain is just uncomfortable. Do I need to pre-empt what may follow with a dental check up or do I leave it hoping it goes as quickly as I it came? Thank you.

If you are in a lot of pain go to the dentist. You might have an infection and need antibiotics

How often do you visit the dentist /hygienist? Yes if it's swollen it needs seen to.

In my experience toothache never resolves itself. You will need a dentist.

I had a cyst under a tooth many, many years ago, that became infected. That caused a swollen cheek but it was painful.

You’ll most likely have an X-ray during your check up. If infection you’ll be given antibiotics.

My cyst gave me further trouble and I ended up having my wisdom tooth (which is was under) extracted. In fact they extracted all four wisdom teeth under GA.

But I’d advise getting an appointment asap.

Yes you need to go to the dentist. I has a similar problem and it was an infection. I think most people get to the age of 47 without getting a toothache.
