It depends whether you need the confirmation, understanding and acknowledgment of being formally diagnosed and/or if you are looking for medication.

i know I have it everyone says. So I guess it’s medication but will this actually change much?

Onewishtoday · 10/09/2024 22:06

iv been on waiting list for 3 years but still have another 2 year to go. I get a bill of money tolorrow and could go private. But I feel
like
ill be disappointed if I do and the medication isn’t life changing

It won't change anything in terms of how you manage your symptoms or your daily life
It might validate your views
Unless you're in education I can't see how it's useful as there's so much self help literature
Unfortunately tick tock means everyone thinks they are neurodivergent- and private assessors are making a mint

The medication can indeed be life changing.
If you can get it that is!

Medication has make a significant difference to me. So many other mental health medications could probably have been avoided over the years when I was younger. Moved into a managerial post which I wouldn’t have done unless I was on meds. When I can’t get them it’s really not easy but at least I understand why and what helps.

Why only being in education will it be useful?

How do you know you will receive a diagnosis of ADHD?

If you do, then there are a range of medications that may support your symptoms

Daddydog · 11/09/2024 21:42

I'm going though this process at the moment. I started it in 2018 and gave up as I didn't think getting a diagnosis would make much of a difference as my days of education were long over (misconception!). Also didn't like the sound of having to take meds daily. But as ADHD affects so many aspects of life, since getting married and having kids, my coping mechanisms that worked when I could be selfish and only think about myself - started to fail. Want to be the best person I can and if I need meds, so be it. One upside is that since going through this journey and getting help, my partner is a little bit more understanding of why my brain is such mess and isn't so angry with me all the time!
