Is 45 average age to start perimenopause?

Periods a bit more erratic, anxiety slightly more than usual? I’m slightly older than 45 but only noticing little things that other ladies say they have and feel?

OP posts:

Pretty much, yes. Although mine started early 40’s and my, once regular as clockwork periods, going haywire and crippling anxiety were my first symptoms.

Tumbleweed101 · 10/09/2024 18:01

I noticed my moods and periods changing from about that age. I'm now approaching 49 and just started my first HRT patch to see if it helps from night waking, low moods and achy joints. If it does it'll be amazing.

redalex261 · 10/09/2024 18:03

Yes. Gradual slide I would say. No change to period for me but poor sleep, slight loss of focus, tiredness etc. Deal with ASAP.

superplumb · 10/09/2024 19:32

Mine was noticeable around 41. Everything went mad overnight. I struggled on but spoke to a gp who suggested that's what it was.

lobsterkiller · 10/09/2024 19:45

I think I started to notice just before my 50th, nothing too obvious. My periods slightly erratic, the odd night of middle of the night waking and a bit dryer downstairs.

I started HRT sequi at 50 and I'm now 53. I feel like I bypassed some of the worst symptoms others have because I started HRT very quickly after symptoms started.

Sequi gives a regular bleed and I'm over having periods, I'll be asking for conti from 54.

olympicsrock · 10/09/2024 19:47

42-43 here

incognito50me · 10/09/2024 19:53

Mine was about 47. Exacerbated by low iron, as it turned out later, but definitely perimenopausal symptoms too.
I'm now 49 and my periods are still quite regular. My sleep and brain fog is better since being on iron and utrogestan; hot flashes are starting up again, it seems (I had about 6 months of barely any). But honestly, the hot flashes are the least bothersome of the symptoms that had started appearing.

I think my very first signs were at 42 when my cycle changed slightly. I started gettnore symptoms after 45 - like anxiety, feeling flat, poor sleep etc. Generally it's been manageable. I'm 49 now.

offyoujollywelltrot · 10/09/2024 19:58

I started peri at 40. I'm 47 now and still in it. 😫

PinkArt · 10/09/2024 20:00

45 is at the bottom of the normal range for menopause itself (45-55) and peri starts up to 10 years before menopause, so yes very much a normal age for to be kicking in.
My first symptoms were from around 37 and at 44 I think mine are on the cusp of stopping.

oObyeOo · 10/09/2024 20:01

This could potentially explain the crippling anxiety I am feeling, which I have never felt before! I’m 40

MILLYmo0se · 10/09/2024 20:03

Average for progesterone cstarting to drop is 35 so 45 will within range for noticeable symptoms

Cynic17 · 10/09/2024 20:05

At the risk of repeating myself, OP, everyone is different.
I never even noticed anything, or knew there was such a thing as "perimenopause" - it wasn't an issue for me.
If you feel unwell, see your GP. If you're mostly OK, just crack on as normal, and don't look for problems. Other people's experiences (& commercial promotions!) are of no use to you.

AyeupDuck · 10/09/2024 20:06

48 for me and all over by 51, I aged post menopause. Had looked a lot younger before and then bam!

AutumnComing2 · 10/09/2024 20:10

Yep 42, started HRT 44 been on it for 8yrs now. Never struggled with anxiety until early 40s, then brain fog which made me think I was seriously losing my marbles, plus joint pain, sleepless nights all of which improved with hrt despite trying all the usual healthy diet, exercise and sleep.

Melodysmum12 · 10/09/2024 20:13

I’m 37 and I wonder if it’s what I have already… slightly earlier periods, worse PMT, skin bad again, excessively tired and an itchy vulva!

Bouledeneige · 10/09/2024 20:18

I'm one of 4 sisters and our menopause ages and symptoms varied hugely. I was 44 and one if my sisters was 55. Two of us had terrible symptoms and two barely any at all.

JC03745 · 10/09/2024 20:18

When your own mother went through menopause/peri, can give a clue to when you will too- but everyone is different.

I had very regular, 32 day cycles since I can recall. I was still going through IVF at 42 (had TTC 12yrs and no medical issues ever found). I mentioned to the consultant that my cycles were slowly changing from 32days down to 30days. She never mentioned that it could be a sign of peri!

I'm now mid 40's and although still regular, I'm down to a 27day cycle now. No other symptoms that I've noticed. A friend went through full menopause at 36!

Same here, peri was a breeze, only symptom was just skipping periods. Post menopausal by 38 and it was horrendous

Pictures50 · 11/09/2024 19:43

46 for me, periods ended at 53, menopause eased at 56....a long hard decade.

ReacherSaidNothing · 11/09/2024 19:49

My GP informed me yesterday when I visited to discuss peri-like symptoms that average age is 52 and I'm 'on the young side' at 44 for peri-menopause. Was more or less told that I likely have depression instead🤔

WarriorN · 11/09/2024 19:53

It's normal to completely stop periods between 45-54.

Perimenopause can last up to about 8 years.

So perimenopause can start in your late 30s or late 40s

Early peri is generally that periods are heavier, more moderate swings etc as progesterone starts to drop first. Might be irregular but mine weren't. Mid is more temperature issues at night. Digestive issues. Late peri tends to be lighter periods, more fatigue, irregular.

But everyone is different and there can be all sorts of other symptoms or none at all.

WarriorN · 11/09/2024 19:54

Mood swings not moderate swings!

Your GP is ill informed. 52 is average age of menopause I think. 45 is when many women start experiencing perimenopause. Ask to see another doctor!

WarriorN · 11/09/2024 20:03

It's still counted as within the normal range to have completed menopause at 45.
