Other people’s dreams are boring, I know, but last night I had one of the most terrifying nightmares I have ever experienced.

I have a tendency towards vivid, coherent, realistic dreams, and once had one so complete that I turned it into a short story with barely any embellishment.

This one would also make a good short story.

I often dream of living in other houses, and also of water coming through the ceiling – this particular dream combines both.

I’m living in a big old house and my bedroom has two double beds with white sheets. The ceiling slopes down towards the windows, and in this slope, cracks have appeared, through which water is dripping. Luckily my neighbour Keith is big on DIY so I have invited him in to assess the damage and what needs to be done. Keith is a bit of a know-all, an inveterate mansplainer, but a good bloke at heart and has helped me sort out various things around the house over the years.

I leave him to look at the cracks whilst I go downstairs to make a cup of tea for us both. When I get back to the bedroom, he is grinning smugly at me.

‘So what’s the damage?’ I say glumly as I sip my tea.

‘We’ll get to that,’ he says, taking the mug and putting it down on the dresser without sampling the contents. ‘You’re not very observant, are you?’

‘What do you mean?’

He points at the tall-backed chair that sits between the two double beds. ‘That chair there is really three chairs!’

I know this – it’s three chairs stacked cleverly together that can be separated out into three chairs of different sizes. ‘I am aware of that,’ I say drily.

Keith frowns. ‘Well, I doubt you are aware of this.’ So saying he heaves one of the beds to one side, to reveal, on the floor below, that the carpet has been cut away to reveal the bare boards beneath. And what looks like a trapdoor.

My mouth goes dry. ‘No. I did not know that was there.’

Keith grunts as he bends down. ‘Want to see?’

Before I can answer he is already prising it open with his penknife. I get down beside him. The trapdoor opens with a protesting creak to reveal a dark space. As Keith gets out his pen-torch I notice a strange smell, like pickled onions. I suddenly want to slam the door and get out but something stops me. Keith leans into the hole and flashes his torch around. ‘Well well well!’

‘Let me see.’ I squeeze up beside him and look down. The first thing I see is the carpet – a swirly orange and brown design that looks like something from the 1970s. This forms the floor of a narrow corridor, that leads back into the house and disappears round a corner. This corridor is only three feet deep, and its walls are decorated with faded pink wallpaper with a pattern of yellow and blue flowers, that clashes horribly with the carpet.

Keith’s torch beam reveals that the corridor extends a few metres, then makes a right turn. The smell of pickled onions becomes even stronger.

I envisage a network of such corridors running all through the house, unseen and unknown until now. All this time, a secret world below me. I shudder.

Then I hear it. At first, a sound like a cat’s claws on a scratching post. Then a rhythmic grunting, like something struggling to breathe. It’s getting louder. Whatever is making it is getting nearer.

‘What the hell’s that?’ whispers Keith. He trains the torch beam at the point where the corridor turns the corner. I fancy I can see shadows.

I can’t move. I don’t want to see, but I can’t move. The scrabbling, the grunting, gets louder and louder.

And then, round the corner –

I wake up screaming MUUUM! MUUUM! and have to keep the light on for the rest of the night.

Have you been watching any horror films lately? 😅 I'd like to know what happens next. I also have some seriously vivid, scary dreams and it bothers me for the rest of the night, including being stabbed (was convinced I could feel cold sharp, slicing feeling in my side) and being bitten by zombies/monsters. Also have a lot of supernatural/demon type dreams where I go into my kids room in the night and something horrific is lurking in the corner of the room/corner of the ceiling grinning at me.

I’ve watched a few horror films in my time and the only ones which really scare me are the ones where they are based on true stories. But then you get ones which are obviously stretched.

OP, yours is scary enough.

ElatedShark · 11/09/2024 17:22

Have you been watching American horror stories OP? that sounds like an episode from that with the two sisters

Headawobble · 11/09/2024 17:28

Creepy OP. I once had a fever and was having very vivid dreams. I dreamt I woke up to scratching on the window of my bedroom. I walked over and looked to see a man standing almost the same height as me staring in (the conservatory was below my window at the time so he was "stood" on that). I was so shocked and scared I froze. He just smiled and blinked slowly and when he opened his eyes they were totally blood red (no pupil etc), he blinked again and blood fell all over his cheeks and I woke up. It was nearly 20 years ago but I still remember it in such detail and HATE looking out of a window at night still.

I had a full on lesbian dream last night and I liked the sex so much that I'm questioning myself. Happily married, never thought about women in that way before but I feel confused and horny AF since then

Neves7 · 11/09/2024 22:02

Sigh, my dreams are usually completely bizarre and generally incoherent. Last night I dreamt that people were climbing out of my toilet because it was the exit for a secret underground tunnel for refugees from overseas…
They were all wearing business suits and very polite.
Oh and I was welcoming them to Canada, except I’m not in Canada.

Superb @armadillio! All it needed was a cliffhanger / plot twist - involving he's now shacked up her mother - who breeds Guinea Pigs for export.

I've had some really epic dreams over the years. Two that I've been working on turning into stories are:

A really long supernatural war basically. I was back at university and met a guy called Apollo who turned out to be a vampire. And his best friends were a werewolf and a demigod. One of my friends turned out to be a half-banshee. There was an evil vampire called Cato who was out to get Apollo and Cato was helped by a sorceress called Mordextra and two "shadow" twins who were like if you could get a ghost of a ghost. It all ended up in an epic battle and I actually woke up after it ended for a change.

Another one I had been kidnapped and was being held in a massive log cabin/commune type place with lots of other people. If you remember the serial killer Silas in Hollyoaks then the guy who had kidnapped us all was like him but wasn't him, just looked sort of like him, same sort of age and creepiness around him. I think his name was Gerald in my dream. We were all told we couldn't escape but of course now and again people would try it. They would always get caught and then taken to "solitary" but we knew they were being murdered as we never saw them again. But I was the one that worked out that we were often served curry shortly after someone had vanished and yup, Gerald and two other guys were the ones in charge and they were chopping up the escapees and feeding them to us. I eventually hatched a foolproof escape plan, they nearly caught us but I woke up just before we got free.

I'm amazed at and quite distracted by the level of detail in your dream dialogue.

(I said, lightly brushing my hair away from my eyes before turning to the door.)

maybelou · 12/09/2024 02:03

I had a horrible nightmare last night, really detailed and kept falling back into it when I woke up. One moment from it has really stayed with me today - looking up at our loft hatch and seeing it cracked open just slightly, and a man watching me through the gap. It's giving me shivers even now, so I'm putting off sleeping tonight by reading MN!

ncforcatquestion · 12/09/2024 03:02

I was listening to a sleep hypnosis video on Youtube. I couldn't remember my eyes closing, but suddenly my mum was standing in the room in front of me. But she wasn't my mum but a copy, with a different hairstyle, and she seemed malevolent.

I opened my eyes at this point and she disappeared. I closed my eyes again and suddenly felt light and floaty. I felt an energy going through my body and then there was a voice in my ear saying pay attention. And I saw a vision of a globe, only I was able to see all of the detail far below. It was like looking at those old paintings of heaven and hell layered on top of each other.

Then I was seeing my room again, and I could hear my mum and sister talking in the other room. I walked into the hall and then the living room, and I could see they weren't really my mum and sister but evil creatures impersonating them.

I acted like I didn't know and tried to talk to them normally while planning how to escape. I ended up just running from the room, ran upstairs and my sister grabbed me, and it really hurt. It was like being electrocuted. I woke myself up by jumping from the landing

Haha that would have made the story complete!

Alas, I didn’t write it, I got it from the Take a Break Reddit sub 😊 I thought it was a genuine story but I think it’s a spoof!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 12/09/2024 09:51

I used to have the same nightmare every night when I was on a high dose of antidepressants. I would wake up and hear a noise coming from outside the door, get up and try and turn on the light but it wouldn’t work, I’d keep trying but the room stayed dark and the noise is getting louder and louder and then my ears start buzzing and the carpet starts growing, I realise I’m dreaming so I wake myself up. I get up and go to the light switch, which again doesn’t work, and the whole dream repeats over and over until I actually wake up, usually experiencing some kind of sleep paralysis where I see faces floating in the room or (much worse) feel something pushing me on my back. The only way to get out of the cycle was to wake myself up fully and drink some water. It was terrifying.

Shrimpi · 16/09/2024 09:58

I feel it is highly relevant to this thread to point out that the enormously influential film "The Terminator" was conceived by James Cameron (then a nobody) after he had a dream featuring the vivid image of a metal skeleton emerging from flames - from that powerful visual starting point he literally came up with the whole film. It launched his career!

Ormally · 16/09/2024 10:40

I have a couple of similar elements in a dream that's recurred a time or 2. Definitely water dripping through the corner of a (student) room, though in my dream this is due to an old shower room joining next to that room which is manky, leaky and steamy.

Instead of a trapdoor there is a kind of lower level vent or skirting thing that opens and goes through to what looks like an old and forgotten set of narrow passages - but nothing scratching!

Interestingly I did work somewhere that was quite modern and sleek in its public areas, but had an old warden's flat in the middle of the premises that was hidden, but still in use to store furniture. Your time capsule decor is very like how it is!

Exx · 16/09/2024 10:46

Nicotine patches are supposed to cause amazing dreams, especially if you are a non-smoker 😁

bringbacksideburns · 16/09/2024 13:00

“ It’s not what it looks like!” 😆

I had a horrible dream when I was a little kid and I’ve never forgotten it. My mum had a very distinctive outfit in RL at the time - think early 1970s long purple maxi coat with black fur at bottom and a matching hat. Anyway, I was trying to catch her up in my dream and we were in a street near home. I was desperately calling her and trying to get to her and then she turned round and had a monster face like a pig.

My best friend also had a dream as a kid that it was hometime at school and all the parents were waiting outside and the other kids were saying “ There’s your mum!” but she knew it wasn’t really her mum. It just looked like her but was evil. Waiting there to take her home.

Incidently we both have very difficult relationships with our mums!

Oh I SEE lol. Yes I do know what Take A Break is!

Funnily enough I am a published author with 10 novels to my name and numerous short stories. So that IS the day job for me!

😮
