To pawn my necklace?

I was gifted a (I believe real) diamond necklace for my 18th birthday by my grandparents. They’ve never told me how much it cost, only “it was a lot of money”.

I’m now 30, and have never worn it. I’ve never worn any jewellery due to sensitive skin. (I get rashes and struggle with sensory issues)

I feel guilty that I have never worn it. My grandparents (now in their 80’s) haven’t asked me about the necklace in years. It’s just sitting in its original box in my bedside drawer.

Would I be unreasonable to pawn it? I’m not expecting a lot for it but would use the money to go towards paying off a minor credit card debt.

Personally yes, if it's never been worn, and you feel no emotional tie to it what's the point of keeping. Explore other options before a pawn shop....they pray on the desperate.
If asked say it's too precious to wear.

I speak from a position of getting rid of a lot of my parents stuff recently. I'm 55 and my mum died when I was 17. She had a 1970s style display cabinet she loved...I had it in my house for 30years but it was looking battered and old and so I got rid of it...it was a thing, not my mum, not something really important to our relationship.

So yes use it to really help you now

Personally I’ve never been in a pawn shop but this doesn’t surprise me. What other options would you suggest? (Sorry, I’ve never bought or owned much jewellery so I’m a bit clueless to this 😅)

An auction house

If you have an independent jeweller nearby they will often buy good quality jewellery. We have a local shop who will give a no obligation valuation if they are interested in buying it to resell

I agree that you should try a jeweller and an auction house before a pawn shop.

Do you where they got it? Is it a family heirloom? First stop is to take it to a proper jeweller to check the diamonds are real and what it’s worth. You’d get much less than its real value at a pawn shop.
