Checking dog didn’t mess - reasonable?

I was at my relatives house this afternoon and we were stood in her kitchen.

She lives in a house that doesn’t have a garden at the front, but it has some grass and that grass goes down the side of the house (which is hers). It’s a nice house and she plants flowers etc, she likes to take care of it. but there are no walls, fences or gates allowed at the front or side.

As we were chatting, a lady walking a dog stopped outside the window on the pavement. She didn’t see us and she was letting her dog all over the grass.

My relative was livid. She went outside and pointedly checked where the dog was to make sure it wasn’t pooping and the lady looked up and walked away with it.

Relative came back inside and that was it. I get that this isn’t my business, but I didn’t really want relative doing this as I worry about who you get into confrontation with these days, but relative was never going to let the ‘cheeky buggar’ leave without it being noted that she was letting the dog use a garden as a toilet,

Who is being unreasonable?

I’ve done a diagram of house garden area and pavement. I promise lady has a pet dog and not a pet spider.

I have similar bit of grass and I'm sick of having to check it for dog shit every time I get the mower out! Disgusting when it's obviously someone's property and people let their animals piss and shit on it. Well done to your relative for saying something

I’m sorry you are dealing with this too. I know it really bothers my relative. It is disgusting and I was quite shocked to see the person with their dog right outside the kitchen window! Less than about a meter away. She couldn’t have seen us both stood there.

People are just really rude apparently.

I was trying to decide if the spider would pass for a dog when a penis caught my eye! Is that the dog owner?!

I agree OP, I definitely wouldn't want to get into a confrontation with someone who has a big pet spider.

In fairness and if you look closely, the bottom four lines were the legs and then the two to the left going up were the ears and the back right one was the tail.

Your relative was entirely reasonable! Might be a bit biased though as this is a pet hate of mine. We have a neighbour who walks his dog late in the evening and several times I have come home and he is letting his dog crap on our front lawn. The first time, when he saw my look of utter disgust he said 'It's okay, I'll pick it up'. He did pick it up but I don't want dogs shitting in my garden at all! He explained that his dog prefers to shit on grass rather than the hard pavement. I was lost for words but wish I had thought of a polite way of saying that I don't care about his dog's shitting preferences and that if it is so important perhaps it could use their lawn instead.

My husband thinks I am complaining about nothing. But surely it's not acceptable to let your dog poop on other people's front lawn? Words will be had (politely but firmly) next time it happens. I haven't plucked up the courage to say much yet but my face must make my feelings clear as he dashed off the second and third times it happened.

Clearly more common than I thought.

My relative has no problem confronting people who she deems cheeky. I had to persuade her not to broadcast the violation on the neighbourhood Facebook page. Although perhaps in retrospect I should have just let her get on with it.

I have a similar garden - not allowed to have a fence.

It’s completely unacceptable to even walk on let alone let a dog shit/piss on it. It’s a private garden.

So many dog owners are completely clueless. If they can train the dog not to shit/piss all over the house, they can train it not to shit on public footpaths/gardens. They should be shitting in their own gardens.

greenbirds · 10/09/2024 14:21

@CarpetSlipper I sympathise - we are also not allowed fences!

JohnTheRevelator · 11/09/2024 02:30

Pet spider! 😂😂😂

Dog owner here.

If it is a lead length onto the grass that close to the pavement, I would let me dog wee on it, or poo.

I would try not to and would certainly pick it up but, in an emergency, I think it's better for them to go on grass than the pavement where people will then walk in it.

Luckily he normally saves his poos for the bridleway undergrowth or field.

If she has such a short strip and is that worried about it, a more formal barrier (shrubs, stones etc) might be better.

You would literally let your dog poo on someone else’s grass? Seriously? 😧

EXACTLY .

I think if it’s her front garden it’s not ok for someone’s dog to be on there.
I also think B for your diagram because the effort is brilliant but dogs only have four legs xo
