Is this unethical?

Am I unreasonable to buy things from Facebook market place and then sell them on for a profit?
Just that really. I'm always looking for ways to make some money but sometimes I feel guilty about it.
I'm not talking about buying things that are potentially worth loads of money, generally I make £20-30

If it's not from people you know then I think it's OK.

A long as you aren't getting the items under false pretences.

E.g pretending you are in financial crisis or escaping a bad relationship.

Some people do this to get first in line or cheaper/free items and then they sell them and its terrible.

As far as just buying normally?
It is fine.
The original sellers chose what price they wanted to get for it and that is their responsibility.

I'd be fine with people doing this with stuff I've sold on there. I generally only put things on to avoid paying the council to take them away.

This.

MontagueMoo · 09/09/2024 18:21

Of course it's ethical as long as you're acquiring the items ethically (i.e. not lying or stealing).

Selling things on for more than you paid is how the whole vintage and antiques game works.

StormingNorman · 09/09/2024 18:24

It’s not unethical at all. It’s capitalism.

Catlord · 09/09/2024 18:36

I wouldn't say so, unless they've specified they want it to go to someone for their kids' use or similar. I mean, you've still paid the asking price but it's not really in good faith.

They are more likely just to want to get rid of their old stuff and don't overly care to whom. They won't care what you do next with it.

Agreed with being honest. Obv can't prove it but think I've had people trying to queue jump/ go get reductions by claiming dire straits. Their profiles suggest otherwise.

Bear in mind that people do use FB marketplace as a low cost source of kids stuff so don't clear everything especially if not a big town.

Daisypod · 09/09/2024 18:37

I always pay what the asking price and don't try to get anything for less or free

Also probably do one item a month so not sweeping up everything!

I agree with this. I give away and sell stuff for cheap just to get rid of it. I don't mind if someone can get more for it by selling it on.
