to want to shut my cat in the garden until he remembers how to control his bladder?

Before I start, let me warn you this is likely to turn into a massive rant...

We've had our cat since October. Since then I've been nagging DH to get it insured - it was his idea to get the cat, and I said I'd agree to it if he agreed to do ALL the maintenance, as we have an 8mo DS and I have enough to do without sorting out litter trays and stuff. He said "OK" but surprise surprise, he never got round to insuring it

This past Wednesday we took the cat to the vet as he couldn't wee. He was hospitalised and treated, and is now on medication and special food to stop the problem returning. This has all cost £600, so now we can't afford to go on holiday in June.

He's been put on medication to relax his bladder sphincter to stop the problem recurring. The trouble is, he is now pissing everywhere. Well, everywhere except his bloody litter tray! I shut him outside for a bit but DH complained that I was being cruel. So, I let him back in, and he has:

  • Pissed on the floor in the hall
  • Pissed on a rug
  • Pissed on a blanket
  • Pissed on the floor in our office
  • Pissed on my lovely green knee-high boots.

ARGH I really, really am beginning to wish I'd never said yes to getting the bloody creature in the first place!

Makingdo, please don't feel the need to justify your actions to me. I'm sure you're perfectly comfortable with the decision you've made to get rid.

"or she could have him rehomed to someone whom may be happy to deal with his problems or provide him with a lovely outdooor home"

Makingdo, the OP never said anything about her cat not being able to be outdoors. I think you may be projecting your situation on to the OPs here.

TsarChasm · 19/04/2008 16:06

Sympathies (especially the boots) and at £600. YANBU.

We used to have two cats. Trips to the vet were astronomical and our cats used to enjoy coughing up eveywhere and leaving little piles of yak all over the furniture for us to discover each morning.

Haven't had any pets for years now since dc came along. I always said never again.

Thanks for this thread. I'm sorry that's not much help is it? It's just that I have been wavering ever so slightly lately due to pressure from dc to 'please please mummy can we have a cat/dog/rabbit etc', but in my heart of hearts I really don't want a pet again cos I know it'll be me that clears all that up again and they are so expensive.

ExtraFancy · 19/04/2008 20:03

To clarify, my cat is going nowhere! It's a temporary condition, yes, and should be cleared up in a week or two. He's currently confined to the hall and the stairs, plus a few hours of fresh air a day - we have a big garden.

I have to concede to the point about being a f*king idiot for not getting pet insurance sooner though. Most spoken words in my house this week? "I TOLD YOU SO!"

Makingdo my friend has two cats who poo in the bath all the time. She doesn't have kids, so just puts up with it! Not sure what to suggest, sorry...my cat has always been meticulous about going outside/in his litter tray up until this week.

He'll be ok in the garden for a week I reckon. Mine stays out there all the time even when it's cold.

The little git.

FreddysTeddy · 19/04/2008 20:44

ExtraFancy, I meant your DH was the f*cking idiot, not you.

Hope you get it sorted

yurt1 · 19/04/2008 20:47

What are they giving him? When ds1 couldn't go because of bladder spasm the hospital gave him calpol and nurofen. Bet the vets costs more

Our cat pissed everywhere, then turned diabetic. It was old and had come free with the house and it kept weeing where (autistic) ds1 was eating. We were going to have her put down (thread on here somewhere). The day she was meant to be sent to cat heaven she disappeared then reappeared after the vets had shut. Never weed in the house again

You have my sympathy- it was a nightmare.

erm I really wasn't suggesting the cat should be given paracetamol.

it was more a comment at the size of vet bills. I can barely get calpol into my children, let alone a cat..... Actually didn't know that paracetamol was dangerous for cats. Do they miss the enzymes for breaking it down then?

I'm just bitter because our very old, poorly (collapsing) cat cost £250 to put down!!!! At the end on a long life.

Thanks oops, he is lots better today and so far has not peed anywhere other than the litter tray. He's got his appetite back, and is drinking lots of water, so that's good.

I'll have a look at that website, thanks. We think thatit most likely developed because he is middle-aged/overweight (thanks to previous owners). Vet says he should be OK with the right diet.

We are taking him back for a check-up in a week or so

"Get rid of that cat! IMO, you'd be completely justified in leaving it in front of the RSPCA."

oh people like you piss me right off. Are you a heartless cow in all areas then or just ones to do with animals??

To everyone saying lock the cat out etc etc...POOR CAT HAS BEEN HOSPITALISED DUE TO A MEDICAL URINARY CONDITION...for fucks sake are you people fucking normal or not?????

When cats have cystitits/other UTI, they pee all over. Cats are normally clean and WILL NOT pee anywhere but garden/tray. If they do, it is a sign of medical/psychological problem and not the cat doing it to piss you off!!

Insensitive bastards!!

ImflightbutIcantlogintoday · 20/04/2008 13:25

Not really

Ours just pisses on the clean laundry when her toyboy comes in at night. I would too if I was being poked up the bum with a spiky penis every sodding night.

hascas · 20/04/2008 19:21

Our kittens kept pissing and poo-ing on the hallway mat. A few drops of eucalyptus oil on there stopped them from doing so - cats (and dogs) cannot abide the smell of it. It also helps to eradicate the awful funk of cat poo/pee!

narkymum · 20/04/2008 19:32

my cat pissed on my bed today because shes in love with dh and hates me i have tryed to tell her she is welcome to him she did it where i had been laying bloody pain in arse should have said in pre nup about rehoming his frigging rancid cat

cariboo · 22/04/2008 13:08

Crumbs! my comments were made tongue-in-cheek... Do you think I'd dare write such inflamatory comments on MN in seriousness? I was just joining in on OP's rant. I'm not an "insensitive cow/bastard/etc" nor am I unaware that the RSPCA is stretched to breaking. I love & respect all animals & have had 3 cats myself, the last of which (whom!) died of feline AIDS, poor little thing. I do feel though that the OP's DH has behaved very irresponsibly.

BTW, if you ever need to give a cat meds (vet-approved, of course) the best way I've found is to use a syringe - without a needle! - & squirt the contents in the corner of the cat's mouth, not the front or else it might choke.

Sorry for any offence caused.
