AIBU to assume most people just use BBC news mostly as their "news homepage" as it were and maybe go elsewhere for detail or perspectives on various stories?

AIBU to ask where you go for your news primarily? Papers? Social media? TV?

Today in Focus and The Daily podcast.

FirstTimeHomeowner · 09/09/2024 11:03

I used to have the apps, but to be honest it depressed me so much I deleted them during covid.

Normally if it's something big I see it on Mumsnet/socials and then google it and read an article from a decent source. I also get notifications from Apple News which I very occasionally open up.

Marmiteontoastgirlie · 09/09/2024 11:03

BBC homepage like you and The Economist app.

CoffeeCantata · 09/09/2024 11:05

Yes, BBC News online. I can't bear to listen to or watch the TV news any more. I keep abreast of events but some news stories, I just read the headline or skim - others I'll read the full report.

PaillettenBedeckt · 09/09/2024 11:12

The only news app I've got downloaded is The Guardian. I get important news update notifications from that.

Otherwise, updates from friends on FB, or again I follow The Guardian on there. I also have a news sidebar on my phone that I scroll through, which has various sources. Although I make sure it doesn't report news from The Daily Mail et al. or dodgy websites that have screaming bullshit headlines and harvest data. The BBC is still on there.

Occasionally I find out news from topical memes.

LittleLlama · 09/09/2024 11:13

I use the BBC homepage and Sky News for most of my News.

I also look at the front pages of the Telegraph and Times (but as I don’t subscribe I am unable to read any articles). I occasionally read an article in the Guardian.

Hallamlass · 09/09/2024 11:16

BBC news online, also their tv bulletins. I also check C4 news - the only one apart from the BBC which I watch. I read the Independent online, I don't like the others and no longer trust the Guardian.
I watch the Laura Keunssberg Sunday morning tv programme for political updates and opinion, sometimes Trevor Phillips on Sky.

KreedKafer · 09/09/2024 11:17

BBC News, ITN, C4 News, Sky News, newspapers (either online or on paper). Sometimes I read The Economist or the New Statesman.

swimsong · 09/09/2024 11:17

The Ecomist is expensive but worth it. I learn much more about all kinds of subjects from it than anywhere else - and actually rarely read the financial section fully.

Meadowfinch · 09/09/2024 11:20

BBC web site, occasionally BBC TV.

Will very rarely treat myself to the Sunday Times.

Hallamlass · 09/09/2024 11:21

There's a Saturday morning BBC programme where the Foreign Correspondents give updates, it's really interesting and covers issues not included in many bulletins.

Kitkat1523 · 09/09/2024 11:22

BBC app

MsLavender · 09/09/2024 11:23

I follow news sites on social media, Sky News, BBC etc and if an article catches my eye I'll look for further details. If it's a huge news story then I'll usually see it trending on Twitter/X first then go looking for more information if it's something I want to know more about.

I don't buy newspapers offline, I don't watch TV so never watch the news live, I don't use news apps and I don't subscribe to any newspapers online. I can be obsessive about certain things in the news and it impacts my mental health so I try to avoid being bombarded with negative news articles.

AyeupDuck · 09/09/2024 11:26

I personally like to get news from as many sources as possible. So left and right wing and everything in between. I do not like the echo chamber of just sticking to a specific type of press or view. It’s unhealthy.

FuzzyDiva · 09/09/2024 11:27

I get breaking news notifications from Sky and BBC but tend to rely on Reuters as a news site to actually read.

Beth216 · 09/09/2024 11:27

BBC online mostly. For celeb shite gossip Daily Mail.

DriverMeCrazy · 09/09/2024 11:29

Radio, mostly.

MidYearDiary · 09/09/2024 11:29

Guardian, Irish Times, BBC and RTE news.

Sethera · 09/09/2024 11:32

A fair summary in my case, but with the addition of my DH randomly quoting bits of his beloved (paper version) Daily Fail at me throughout the day😄

You're brave to admit you read the DM on here! 😂

Jjiillkkf · 09/09/2024 12:05

Thank you for your responses! Some good suggestions here. I always tend towards the BBC because I'm only dimly aware of any reliable alternative. I was just curious what others did and what their go to was as increasingly the BBC news homepage has disappointed me with the growing volume of very unserious entertainment articles

I don't! The way I see it, there isn't anything I can do about it except when voting comes a round so I ignore it. Not missing the added stress!

Hallamlass · 09/09/2024 12:08

I have the BBC app and you can change the settings. I don't get any topics that I won't read.

Jjiillkkf · 09/09/2024 12:12

Never thought of that Hallamlass- my only worry would be missing out on something cultural that is part of the zeitgeist because of my settings! But really that's minor...

Thanks again for the responses

Hi. I'm guessing your name is Jack and you're alright.
