Knife found in garden

Found a knife in the garden (sharp ish one). Things often come from next door as they have young kids but I can’t see how they would have let their young kids have a knife to throw over. I also have a young daughter who has found it so it’s annoyed me. Where would you think it came from?

Also, it won’t have been there for ages or before we moved in. We’ve been here 3 months (new build) and it’s only just appeared

Think you definitely need to talk to the neighbours. Because they either need alerting to the fact their kids are getting knives and messing around or if they insist it’s not theirs how secure is your back garden? Could someone have been scouting your house out for a burglary and dropped it?

Errr we had a stabbing in the neighbourhood and police were going house to house searching in gardens, bins, and sheds for the murder weapon…maybe turn it in to the police just in case. I know that might feel dramatic but you never know.

Thanks everyone. That’s what I thought as they often throw balls, their dogs toys over, even a space hopper but now this knife is there

Are there gangs active in your local area? They hide knives so that if they are stopped and searched by police they won't have it on them.

Personally if you think it could be to do with the neighbour I'd talk to the parents but if you're certain it's not them I'd turn it in to the police. I would make certain it doesn't stay where it is though and I'd search to make sure there aren't any more.

I hope you and your neighbour stay safe xx

How feasible is it that it was thrown in from the street?

kitsuneghost · 08/09/2024 17:17

Somebody broke in with the intention of murder and got startled in the garden and dropped the knife.

Nourishinghandcream · 08/09/2024 17:24

What sort of knife, kitchen, DIY (Stanley), penknife, Zombie etc etc? Is it new & shiny or has it been laying around for sometime?
Can it have been thrown over from the road/path or are the back gardens landlocked?
Is there absolutely no way it was already there and has now just come to light? Developers are notorious for leaving all sorts of rubbish under turf (hence my earlier question about the type of knife & condition).

Depends how secure your garden is. Could it have been thrown over from neighbours or footpath? Could someone have entered your garden and dropped it? I would check with neighbours first, if they don't recognise it then hand in to police. It is possible it's been in the ground for some time and just come to the surface.

SquatWeightaMinute · 08/09/2024 17:52

Sounds like someone wanted rid of it quickly and chucked it over a fence. If there is access at the back of your gardens I would presume it’s a passerby. Hand it over to the police.

SmudgeButt · 08/09/2024 17:54

Knock on the neighbour's door and ask if they are ok. Did they have a burglary or something?

And then mention that you found a knife in the garden and handed it in to the police as it looked like one of those dangerous ones. And that you hope the police will get fingerprints off it as, well certainly anyone carrying one should be arrested shouldn't they?!

Didimum · 08/09/2024 17:57

Is your garden accessible to the street via a gate, fence or wall?

Dr13Hadley · 08/09/2024 17:58

My DH found a massive knife chucked under a shrub in our front garden right by the footpath. We live in a relatively quiet and safe suburban area but there had been a helicopter out a couple of nights before circling over the woods nearby. He took it to the police station in case it might have been any use (wore gloves and put it in a plastic bag).

Dr13Hadley · 08/09/2024 17:58

Just to add we did check with neighbours first that it wasn't theirs and none had ever seen it. We live in a small cul de sac.

Pear9777 · 08/09/2024 18:03

There is a dog walking field behind but there is some bushes behind the fence aswell. Don’t think it could have come over the front. Gate has latch on

Photograph it. Speak to neighbour and show the photo. If they do not recognise it as theirs, phone the police.

Do not under any circs touch it.

If it looks like rain ask for advice re putting a basin or something big and cheap over it to protect it. Just in case it's a under weapon or something. Until the police arrive to take it.

Whatever's happened it's not good or potentially not good. I'd be investing in blink cameras sharpish.

grimupnorthLondon · 08/09/2024 18:16

We found a knife stuck in a plant pot in our front garden - DH pulled it out by the handle and it was a zombie knife painted black. Called the police who came immediately and took it in an evidence bag - along with DH's fingerprints to rule him out. As pp said kids stash/throw away knives all the time to avoid getting caught with them. If it's anything other than a blunt kitchen knife you should hand it in to the police
