To be sick of Lime bikes being dumped in my street?

This seems to be a growing problem. I am in London, with pretty narrow footpaths. We keep having these Lime bikes being left in really inconvenient places, including in the middle of footpaths, blocking the way. I was just looking out of my window and spotted someone leaving one of these bikes right outside my house, almost blocking my gate. I don’t understand how this is allowed.

I just googled and apparently one borough in London is thinking of banning them if they are not put in designated bays.

I agree that these bikes are a great idea but there has to be a better way!

In other countries they have to be rode from and to a designated area, it won’t let you finish the session unless it’s in one.

So does that mean the user keeps being charged? They really need to do that here and in other countries where they have the same problem. Those things are a huge problem.

They've been a problem in London for a good two years easy.

People seem to deliberately leave them in the most difficult and obstructive place possible.

I don't use Facebook but apparently there is a group where users post pics of selfishly parked bikes.

Immemorialelms · 06/09/2024 22:01

I don't understand how they can be nicked! Wish I knew;)

shockeditellyou · 06/09/2024 22:02

They can be a complete PiTA (round here it’s Voi) but isn’t it interesting we happily accept enormous cars completely dominating streets with parking?

Voi are quite good at moving the ones that have just been abandoned.

SocksShmocks · 06/09/2024 22:02

YANBU. They’re a menace. Santander bikes are fine because you have to dock them. But Lime bikes all over the pavement are a pain especially for people with visual and / or mobility impairments. Or all of us really.

Bruisername · 06/09/2024 22:29

Big cars aren’t blocking the pavement!

sunonthetrees · 06/09/2024 22:46

They are a bit of a menace but I was secretly quite delighted by some very cheeky mid-street parking recently - there was space for cars to get round, and they were dojng a great job at traffic calming! And so much better than the awful pavement parking, for sure

thinkfast · 06/09/2024 22:49

They are a pain round here too. Dumped anywhere. I think we are technically out of their zone, so they get dumped anywhere.

This of you saying to report to Lime, I don't have time to report 5 or 6 bikes every morning when I'm rushing to catch a bus to work.

ZiriForGood · 06/09/2024 22:54

I don't like the bikes left in the middle of the pavement either.

I don't have any issue with them being parked on the normal parking spots - there is no reason to prioritise cars over bikes in a city, unless it is privately owned parking space of course, but public on street parking is a fair game.

spaceshooter · 07/09/2024 12:58

Yeh it happens round here, you can report them.

emmaw1405 · 07/09/2024 13:24

Most of them are stolen or "borrowed" without being paid for and then dumped. If you lift the back wheel, and then run to get on it forces the lock open or breaks it which makes the clicking sound. Used and then dumped wherever because they are not registered to anyone. We had 4 of them at the top of our road - never to be seen again after the first week.

Petalbird · 07/09/2024 14:47

Hate then too. People don't seem to think where they leave them, had people leave them literally outside my front door, they are so hard to move whilst trying to stop a heave fire door shoving you into the bike

MrsToothyBitch · 07/09/2024 15:58

I hate this too. I saw an article about how they're very hazardous for blind / visually impaired pedestrians- something that could be easily remedied with docking stations. I've also seen an idiot of a tourist ride one on the pavement in Central London; dressed up to the nines, going at snail pace and trying to film her self. The silly woman almost went headlong down the steps into Westminster tube station.

AvidDeer · 27/10/2024 12:49

In my area they are getting worse by the week. There are so many just abandoned and thrown in the river. I’m sick to death of them every street now has dumped bikes. Surely this cannot be a good idea. It’s the most stupidest idea I’ve ever heard there was this was gonna happen.

Tootingbec · 27/10/2024 13:03

Feckin hate Lime bikes. Tried to move one that was dumped outside our house and it started telling me in a robotic voice that it was contacting “law enforcement” - like the Met Police are so underwhelmed with crime that they would be rushing to my bit of suburban London to avoid a Line bike being nicked 🫠😂

And when I am in central London there is something about the people who use them that gives me the rage. Always young men cycling like twats. Nothing like the cycle culture in the Netherlands or Belgium where everyone cycles and people respect each others space etc

And pray tell how is someone like myself who is disabled supposed to move a heavy sodding bike so I can walk the pavement? Or people in wheelchairs, the elderly, heavily pregnant or mobility scooter riders. You can't imagine how this might effect others?!!

Every day, I find myself having to navigate around Lime bikes blocking the sidewalk. It’s frustrating, and honestly, it feels dangerous. Whenever I have to move into a busy road just to get by, I know I’m putting myself at risk. Drivers don’t always expect someone in a wheelchair to suddenly be in the street, and I shouldn't have to face that kind of uncertainty just to go about my day.

It’s not just an inconvenience—it’s a safety issue. I shouldn’t have to worry about encountering a blocked pavement or wonder if today’s the day I won’t have a clear path forward. A simple solution, like designated parking spots or better rules to keep these bikes off the pavement, could make a huge difference for people like me.

Give up some car parking spaces so there are more places to park them, would be a good start

I actually live near a designed space where bikes can be parked and are out of people's way. They are still dumped anywhere and everywhere on the foot path.

I've even reported Santander bikes that have been dumped in random places rather than docked.

In fact Lime bikes aren't allowed to be parked in my borough yet they are still found dumped all over as they are ridden from the neighbouring boroughs instead of through it.

Cars in cities are a far bigger problem over all, anything that gets people moving around cities without cars is a progressive move

MobilityCat · 05/11/2024 17:55

If properly managed there would be a lot less cars so parking would not be a problem
