Person says I hit them with my car!

I've just been to my local shop and as I was driving out the carpark into the road a women dashed in front of me and made me stop while she walked past the front of my car, then I pulled away and as I did I heard clang which I'm assuming was her keys on the top of my car.

I pulled out onto the road and made my way home. Then I realised there was a car tailing me really close, carried on but they followed me all the way home so I panicked tbh and drove round hoping they'd get bored, as I approached a roundabout the car shot in front of me and cut me off (completely blocking the road ) rolled down her window and started screaming at that Id hit them and they were going to report me. I didn't realise until then that it was the same person.

She claimed I'd broken her hand (while waving it about) and she could tell I knew by looking at me that I'm knew I hit her. She said she was going to report to me.

I didn't really know what say other I didn't hit her and if I did why didn't I stop and if I didn't stop why did I drive away so slowly with plenty of opportunities to dart down a side road.

I hate confrontation & I'm really shaken up. I checked my car (it's filthy) and there is a smudge where she's hit the top of the car by the far side passenger window but nothing else on the side of the car. But she was so adamant I'd hit her I'm starting to doubt myself, can you hit someone and not realise? I'd come to a stop so I was in first gear when I pulled away?

What will the police do if she reports it? I can't see any cctv at the shop but the car park was really busy so hopefully someone will have seen?

Completely misread the OP - thought she said you hit her car and then she also broke her hand whilst trying to get you to stop. My comment was completely irrelevant!

Similar happened to my aunt except her situation involved a woman insisting she'd hit her car and caused damage (my aunt looked, saw there was damage, and exchanged details). It was only when she got home and spoke to my uncle that she realised a) there was no damage on her car and b) the shape of the mark on the other car looked much more like the woman had reversed into a post or something. Cheeky mare. My uncle rang her up and told her that he would report her to the police for fraud if she dared involve his wife in her lies. Nothing came of it in the end.

I have been, until fairly recently a motor insurance lawyer. This does have many hallmarks of a scam. If so and the third party wants compensation she will need to report it to the police and/or your insurer. As an individual she cannot obtain your insurance details but the police could and would report the matter.

A claim for compensation would be a civil matter and I will bet my mortgage this NOT go to court. It is simply not economically viable for any party. The police would not likely pursue such a criminal matter (I'm 99% sure, can't say 100% obviously). A civil claim wouldn't affect your security clearance and even IF the police pursued it, driving offences below that of DDD/DCD/DUI would not affect security clearance.

If third party made a claim she would be expected to give full access to medical records which would need to have her attending A&E within a very short time of the incident to establish causation.

The bottom line in this case I suspect is she is unlikely to make a claim as I think the mechanism of injury just wouldn't be credible. She's tried to fake something and done it badly. She tried to intimidate and scare you, which to some extent worked but not in the way she hoped at the time. People panic in such situations and do things like give insurer details, hand over money, take the injured party to hospital themselves etc.

I wouldn't waste too much more time worrying.

Scam. Person runs in front of your car then makes a bang against your car with keys, bag, even fist. Then try to go through your insurance or more likely follow you home then threaten you with prosecution or pay £x cash. Report on 101, they’ll know of it.

Just a quick update on this..

The police contacted me today to ask for more details and if I wanted them to investigate, I asked if anyone had reported the incident and there are no reports involving mine or her car.
They said they would keep it on file & if I change my mind at a later date they can investigate.
Really hoping that's the end of it now but it seems strange and was so angry and screaming that she was going to report for her to do nothing?
Thank you for all the replies on Friday I'd got myself a bit wound up Flowers

I'm really glad that the police came back to you, and offered to look into it for you. It's good to know that they do actually take these things seriously, and doubtless if she follows through with you, or someone else, they'll now be forewarned that it's a scam. Once again, well done for reporting it OP.

You did the right thing letting them know. I very much doubt she’ll report it now. Hope you were able to relax and forget about this. Sounds like a woman out to cause trouble.

This is why both Dh and I have dash cams because sometimes in scams as seen by the one where the moped driver throws himself onto the bonnet of the car have a very convenient witness with a mobile phone recording it so it is your word against several people.

I think the camera was £120, Dh watched a video on how to instal it in our cars so all the wires are tucked into the lining of the car and plugged into the cigarette lighter. Later we will be installing them electrically into the fuse panel, again there are videos on youtube on how to do all of this.

I think she was trying to scam you and may have wanted to find out where you live to come and harass you into giving her money.

It’s lucky she doesn’t know where you live. That was clever to drive round for a bit.

A scammer is unlikely to go to the police, so I think (and hope) you’ve probably heard the last from her.
