Cockerel on housing development - yay or nay?

We live on a new build estate. Small gardens, close knit etc. We have neighbours nearby with chickens who can be noisy but generally they are ok - cannot hear them in the house. Clucking generally acceptable noise along with dogs, kids etc.

Neighbour now has a boy chicken who crows in the morning. I think this is a dick move on their part.

AIBU to be irritated that there is a cock on the block?

Someone in my village has got a cockerel this very week! I think it's totally unacceptable in a residential area. I've managed to sleep through its early morning crowing, but it keeps disturbing me on the days when I'm trying to WFH.

I sometimes feel like the only person in the world who likes cockerels. I love lying in bed hearing them cockling and doodling and knowing that I can roll over and go back to sleep. Our neighbour had one for a while and it was great but someone complained and it had to go Sad

My anger is reserved for the inconsiderate w*nkers that let huge noisy fireworks on late at night for so far as I can tell no good reason. I don't want to feel the explosion and think it's a flipping bomb... but natural bird noises are OK.

Somebody near me has a cockerel and I love the sound of it. I find it quite comforting and charming. I much prefer it to fireworks, radios, cars, cars with their engines running, etc. I always hope nobody complains about it. We had a church clock that chimed through the night and I loved that too but some people in some new-build houses complained and they stopped that and also hung the church bells lower so they are not as loud. I loved hearing them on a Sunday morning and evening.

We’ve got a couple of cockerels next door. They’re a delight, proper characters and beautiful birds. Yes they crow early but not much earlier than the magpies, and you can’t exactly complain to anyone about them!

I don’t know that a new build estate is the right place for poultry but I feel sad that they get so much hate. Maybe get to know him and you won’t hate him so much!

I'll swap you the cock in the garden for the multiple of cocks having parties with their mates round here. And the cocks waiting for their dealer to drop off and squabbling amongst themselves when perched on my garden wall at night.

Bax765 · 06/09/2024 18:37

I love the sound of cockerels crowing in the morning!

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 06/09/2024 19:19

Even the chickens are a pisstake. A cockerel is just egregious. Are they obviously mental in other ways?

MinnieMountain · 06/09/2024 19:32

I bet chickens are banned from your estate. Check the TP1 transfer from when your house was first sold. They all have the same rules.

Vitriolinsanity · 06/09/2024 19:36

Ah this allows me to tell you the time I walked into my kitchen and a neighbours chicken was sitting, clucking contentedly on my draining board.

Scars were stumped and just looking at it going WTAF?

Said neighbours also had a cockerel (this was SE London, not rural Gloucestershire). Every Sunday windows would fly open and people would scream at it to shut the fuck up you bastard bird.

leapinglizard1234 · 06/09/2024 19:38

100% no .. so anti social ! Chickens stink too !

mindutopia · 06/09/2024 19:39

I have a cockerel. We live on a farm. With no near neighbours. Yes, it’s absolutely ridiculous. While ours doesn’t bother me, it blends into the background now, I would absolutely not have him if we had close neighbours. Personally, I don’t think anyone should keep chickens on an estate. They need space to move and explore. Our chicken run is the size of many people’s gardens. It’s not fair to keep them cramped in a tiny corner of the average garden.

LammasEve · 06/09/2024 19:41

We're on a rural estate and cockerels aren't allowed according to the covenants - your neighbour is a moron.

PassingStranger · 06/09/2024 19:52

It's a noise nuisance and it's selfish in a built up area. Maybe ok o a farm. Report them.

thecrossIambearing · 07/09/2024 00:45

Definitely NO!

ilikecatsandponies · 07/09/2024 17:22

We have a rooster and a flock of hens, as do our near neighbours. We live in a village.
We give our neighbours eggs and no one has ever complained.
We keep our rooster in a house overnight so he can't crow until he's let out in the morning as he has to be able to stretch up - he can't stretch high enough in his house. It also protects him from foxes.
We don't have a rat problem - that's caused by leaving food out.

Seatalteaxl · 07/09/2024 17:33

If you are rural or based in a farming community then I think you’ll just have to suck it up as cockerels are a part of country life. I don’t think it is appropriate to have one in a suburban setting though.

SpiderGwen · 07/09/2024 18:39

It's against the rules in many, many areas where hens are permitted as cockerels are a noise nuisance. Worth checking with the council?

Merryoldgoat · 07/09/2024 19:03

I thought my neighbour had a rooster as I heard the crowing repeatedly the other morning. I got absolutely furious.

Turned out my son’s ‘press for the sound’ Mr Brown Can Moo book was stuck on the rooster.
