To go to urgent care because of a headache?

This is the third day of it and it's making me anxious - I have previously seen my GP about headaches who said they were migraines and prescribed sumitriprin which didn't really do anything.

It's like a combination of toothache and pressure on the left side of my head. Paracetamol and ibuprofen help but it just won't go away. No other symptoms.

I have another GP appointment but it's not until the 15th, and my practice is closed today so no emergency appointments!

Hope you're ok and don't have to wait too long OP x

Just been seen - the GP thought it was migraine too but has given me a different triptin which I'm waiting for.

Home and in bed with my cats. Already starting to feel better! Very glad I went!

I'm glad you're home and in bed.

As a long term migraine sufferer, if you've been taking paracetamol then please stop. It can cause a Medication Overuse Headache that can be worse than your original headache! When I have the first signs of a migraine I take my triptan, ibuprofen and a can of original coke. No idea why the coke does, but it does genuinely help.

I hope you feel better soon, it's rubbish.

Hope you feel better soon. It does sound like an infection. Sinus, but could be ear or throat or teeth...if it's teeth then obviously see a dentist. But glad you're getting it seen to. It sounds horrible. But I'm sure they can treat it.
I get terrible migraine and it feels like my sinuses and temples and head are swollen and boiling hot. I hope you can get a cold can of pop or something to hold/roll against it. Anything cold seems to help me. Wishing you well x

Still not feeling quite normal but it's better. I have a GP appointment next week and part of me want to push for a scan because two of my aunts have had brain tumours, one had an aneurysm that had to be clipped and my mum has had mini strokes. Not sure if I'm being dramatic tho but I've basically lost a week to a "migraine" that I'm not even convinced is/was a migraine!

@QuestionableMouse but did the triptain the doctor give you help with the pain?

Because if the answer is yes then it's either migraine or cluster headaches. Triptains are NOT painkillers they won't work on regular headpain. They are often used by consultants to diagnosis migraine for this reason.

I would always recommend anyone who has a change in headache pattern to see their GP. And you where absolutely right to seek extra care, unfortunately you probably had status migraine these can go on for serval days. Some people even have them for weeks at a time unfortunately 😕. Given your family history you also wouldn't be unreasonable to ask for a scan.

Another good rescue for migraine is full fat coke (it's the caffine and sugar) with 900mg of aspirin ot ibuprofen if you can have aspirin. Another one recommend by neurologist.

QuestionableMouse · 06/09/2024 18:07

I'm honestly not sure if it's helping - it zonks me out totally! I've been using ibuprofen (recommended by the GP) but will pick some aspirin up tomorrow just in case.

I will bring a scan up at my GP appointment. Is there anything I can take to prevent this? I've missed out on so much stuff I should have been doing!

Ah after reading about status migraine I'm even more confused! I have none of the symptoms bar a headache. Have had no vomiting or nausea, though I haven't really had any appetite.

Genuinely thinking about going back tomorrow if I still feel like this - I feel like everyone has latched on to it being a migraine and they're not looking at anything else!

I think they often seen one sided head pain and diagnose migraine. Which it certainly can be as not everyone get the classic symptoms.

Does it hurt more when you bent over, and are you light sensitive?

But definitely worth going back to see them if it isn't clearing up.

QuestionableMouse · 06/09/2024 18:52

Not light sensitive but yep, worse if I bend over!

Yes I would. Just go and see what they say.

UnhappyAndYouKnowIt · 06/09/2024 19:30

Cold migraine caps are often a godsend. My go to is Anadin because it has the aspirin and caffeine with the paracetamol.

Rocknrollstar · 06/09/2024 20:07

Sounds to me like trigeminal neuralgia. Wish you better

Amberpants · 06/09/2024 20:11

I can get pain in this area on one side and put it down to sinuses. I also clench my jaw and grind my teeth when stressed so can be that too!

sarahzbaker · 06/09/2024 22:18

Wish you better. Headaches are horrid

QuestionableMouse · 08/09/2024 14:43

It's still hanging on. Not sure if I should go back to urgent care or hang on until my GP appointment on Thursday.
