To always tell someone I trust when I’m going away for safety reasons?

I’ve always made it a habit to let at least one close friend or family member know when I’m going away, even if it’s just for a weekend. It’s something my parents always did, so I guess it’s ingrained in me as a safety precaution. I don’t share it publicly or anything, just with someone I trust in case of an emergency.

Recently, a friend mentioned that they don’t tell anyone when they go away, saying they value their privacy and don’t see the point. It got me wondering—am I being overly cautious or is this a sensible thing to do?

I know it seems like common sense, but I’m curious if anyone else thinks it’s over the top. Do you do the same, or do you think it’s unnecessary? AIBU?

As a person who works in digital and physical security, ALWAYS tell at least one person. For your own safety. You never know something could happen to your place back home. An emergency could occur. Or something god forbid could happen to you or you could need help. There should be someone out there who knows where you are.

I think it's a very sensible thing to do.

I do the same.

Very sensible. I always tell my folks, unless it’s with work as they know where I am if I am away on business.

I always do as well. We mostly go abroad as a family so I tell my brother who lives in another country and send him important things like my travel insurance details, etc. He does the same when he’s travelling too. I thought most people do
