I find this story extraordinary. A teacher in a Glasgow primary was deemed 'incompetent' and 'struck off'. Now riddle me this, I know of quite a few 'incompetent' teachers via friends and colleagues children's schools. Even when parents have tried to address it, nothing is done. But here we have not just a teacher being struck off, but NAMED in major newspapers. It all seems ODD. Surely there is more to this story???

It’s because there was an adjudication by the watchdog and it is a matter of public record. All these adjudications are published on their website and are covered in the media.

Witchcraftandhokum · 04/09/2024 19:56

It's public information. Information about struck off teachers is all available on a website.

Cases are published on the GTCS website.

All professional findings of misconduct bodies are made public. Whether teachers, solicitors, doctors, speech therapists, nurses, etc. All have regulatory professional bodies - that's sort of the meaning of the word "profession" - and all can make public findings and stop someone working in that profession. These websites are regularly trawled by journalists in need of a story.

It's normal for teachers who are struck off to be in the press. This one's a little boarding as it just sounds like an inability to do the job. The ones the press are more interested in are when it's been a safeguarding issue.

One teacher I worked with made it into the national newspapers. Not a thing to be proud of but he certainly will never work with children and young people again. 😕

Seen the same happen to 'incompetent' nurses.

Mrswalliams1 · 04/09/2024 20:09

I work in schools. Management either ignore poor teaching or if they try and manage it, the teacher ends up leaving and finding a new job elsewhere. Like nurses, they are almost untouchable.

MassiveSaladEater · 04/09/2024 20:15

@Mrswalliams1
I don’t know why you think teachers are untouchable. I am a teacher and have known of several in different schools who have been got rid of by various means and two who have been struck off. It’s not unusual at all.

Most of the bad teachers I've come across, if they've also got egos the size of a planet, tend to do very well career-wise in MATs. My fave pick has left a trail of failure behind them, yet still is an Exec HT.

And no, I am not naming names.

Sciencestyle · 04/09/2024 20:16

The teaching regulators, GTSC in Scotland and TRA in England publish their rulings and details of every case on their websites.

As stated, it's public knowledge, so if a paper picks it up its fair game, just like the outcome of a court case is.

There a hundreds of rulings published, most are missed by the media and not reported on.

Must have been a very slow day news wise for a newspaper to pick up the story or they really hate teachers and publish all negative stories they can get their hand on. There is not much to see there, the teacher was over their head in the job (it happens) and had already resigned back in 2022. They have now lost their GTC(Scotland) registration which means they cannot teach in Scotland anymore. This is quite a lengthy process, hence why this has taken nearly 2 years. She will never teach in Scotland ever again but I suspect that she probably might not want to anyway. Teaching was obviously not a good fit for her.

She is only banned for 2 years, she can then re-apply and will almost certainly be re-instated to the register, unless the offence is a criminal one that bars you for life the regulator will almost always re-instate after the banning period.

In all likelihood though they will move on and find a new career.
