Pregnancy and Perimenopause

I've been with my husband for 10 years, and we were trying for a baby soon after we were married. After 7 years, I finally got pregnant but miscarried a week after finding out.

Because of how long it took to fall pregnant, I assumed it was unlikely to happen again. So we continued not to use contraception, and if it happens, it happens, but if not, I was fine with it. We both have a child from previous relationships.

4 months before I was pregnant, I was convinced I was perimenopausal, although I still had fairly regular periods.

I am now pregnant again - a year on from miscarriage. I am booked in for a termination as recent personal and financial circumstances, means it's the best thing for us all.

I'm not sad, but I am confused as I have an appointment next Friday to discuss starting HRT.

I'm worried now that they won't allow me to start. That they may see my fertility as a reason they don't think I'm perimenopausal.

I assumed during perimenopause that you would be less fertile, and yet despite hot flushes, vaginal itching and atrophy, insomnia, low mood etc. I seemed to have gotten pregnant twice!

Has anyone experienced similar, and how likely is it that my GP will refuse me HRT?

Thanks in advance

I would think that the GP will leave some time for your pregnancy etc hormones to be gone before starting you on HRT. However they might suggest a vaginal HRT. You can get pregnant during Peri, so the GP won't dismiss Peri.

Thank you. Its taken so long to get them to take me seriously. That's why I'm worried.

@GinNphonics I honestly feel that’s when you really need hrt, is when you’re in peri and as you know when in perimenopause you’re still going to be having periods.I know it’s so difficult to get things across, when speaking to a specialist or doctor, write down the symptoms you’re going through, so you’re more prepared and don’t have to think too much. All the symptoms you’re experiencing, is a big sign you’re in peri.
Regardless as to whether you’re still fertile, the doctor will go by your symptoms, how it’s affecting you. Perimenopause can last for 10/15 year’s, you shouldn’t have to struggle through until your periods stop. Some GP’s are better than others regarding the menopause, so even if this GP, doesn’t take how you’re feeling on board, see someone else, don’t be put off by one doctor.

Yes agree.

Thank you for your replies. My GP is sadly very anti menopause treatment for anyone in their 40's. It's taken a lot of persistence on my part.

With the vaginal HRT, is that estrogen only? I thought I'd need to take progesterone, too if I'm still having periods?
