To dread getting a haircut

To the point where having an anal wart frozen a few weeks ago was easier/preferable?

No complaints about service - hairdresser was pleasant, and I'm more than pleased with the cut. I think it must be the eye-contact in the mirror, it makes me panic a bit. Not massively keen on being touched either, but don't find it as uncomfortable as the former.

Anyone else feel this way? How do you cope?

I hate it too. I wish you could just press a button to choose a style, pay by card, stick your head in a special hood and 5 mins done.

Too much wasted time, too much idle chit chat and then the pretend you like it role play. Ugh.

Svolvaer · 04/09/2024 15:01

I hate going to the hairdresser's too. The forced chat, looking at yourself in the mirror for however long etc. I'm so lucky my daughter trained as a hairdresser (changed job now but still got the skills) and does mine at home for me.

Holitorn · 04/09/2024 15:03

Yes I hate it too, haven’t been in at least a year. Cut my own but really do need to go. Not sure what I hate about it, fine with dentist etc, just find the whole thing so uncomfortable

HighHeelsOnCobblestones · 04/09/2024 15:04

Anawi · 04/09/2024 15:04

I hate it too, probably not to the same degree I'd definitely prefer a hair cut over anything involving anal warts 😆🙈 but I do hate it.

I now have a lovely hairdresser who comes to my house to cut and colour my hair. I find it far more relaxed than a salon environment. I don't have to sit staring at myself/hairdresser in the mirror. It is also a lot quicker having my colour done as she isn't trying to fit other clients in between doing mine. Still have to make idle chit chat a bit, but she's really nice and it feels more genuine and friendly than in a salon to me. Might be worth trying to find a mobile person near you in case it might help. 🤔 it's also cheaper than I've paid before in salons.

I hate it as well - not been to the hairdressers in seven years, lol.

I just do mine at home.

I last went to the hairdresser in 1970.

KarmenPQZ · 04/09/2024 15:07

I have a hairstyle where i can go once a year at most. Every time i go i come out thinking ‘oh it’s not actually that bad and it looks way better for having a nice cut. I should go more often’. But I just can’t bring myself to do it… I guess it’s the anxiety

Outnumbered99 · 04/09/2024 15:10

Never have I read a thread more where I've thought these are my people!! Totally the same, i go probably every 3 years or so but hate every minute

givemushypeasachance · 04/09/2024 15:14

I have short hair - like cut with clippers short - and go to barbers to get it cut, unless I do it myself in the bath. I actively go to different barbers each time, or not the same place for like a year anyway, to avoid developing a relationship with anyone. I just want it cut back and tidied up with as little chat as possible. Also hate looking at myself in the mirror and watching what they're doing, them thinking I'm judging it, answering Qs I don't really care about like do I want it cut around the ears or this short or quarter of an inch shorter, idk, you're the professional whatever you think is best, please just sort it out quickly and efficiently and I will give you money and leave. It's peak social awkwardness territory for me for some reason. Do I tip you? Again idk, tend to just round up the amount when I pay by card and quickly run off...

Wow, I find it hard to co-ordinate everything, while doing it the opposite way too confusing. Is it complicated to cut, ie. layers?

EasyPeelings · 04/09/2024 15:20

I solve the problem by cutting my own hair. Saves me a fortune as well.

longdistanceclaraclara · 04/09/2024 15:22

I HATE it. Last went August 23. Really need to go again. I am autistic and it just to much one on one with strangers for me.

DaughterNo2 · 04/09/2024 15:23

I take a book. I have the polite convo about what I want cut wise, hair washed, then I pick up the book…. It signals that you don’t want to chat (to my hairdresser at least) 🤣

Quacksalver · 04/09/2024 15:24

Haha, this statement makes so much sense to me. The what have you been up to questions. Mind goes blank!

If I pick a Turkish barbers I might be lucky enough to get someone who doesn't have the best English and that tends to cut back on the casual chat! Another pro tip. 😉

Quacksalver · 04/09/2024 15:30

im guessing it’s a very very rare occurrence you go to the hairdresser op?

Not very often extrabubble. I sort of hack bits off with (hairdressing!) scissors for a while, then start thinking how nice it would be not to have to wear my hair in a ponytail all the time which usually results in making an appointment. I didn't used to mind it so much.

OP posts:
Hillarious · 04/09/2024 15:35

I last went two hours ago. I really don't like it. I have a hearing impairment, so have difficulty hearing what the hairdresser is saying over all the hair drying going on around me. I should enjoy it, as the hairdresser is the dad of a friend of one of the DC, and he is really nice. I really would like a different style, but never feel I can articulate what I want.

So, I just focus on how great it feels now, two hours after having the cut, sound in the knowledge that I won't need to go again for a while.

Pilotingmyownlife · 04/09/2024 15:37

I have a home hairdresser cuts out most of the issues and cheaper. Only thing is you have to clean up after (but that's a small sacrifice).

Meezer · 04/09/2024 15:38

How about finding a hairdresser that comes to your house?
So no stress of going to the salon, or sitting in the window etc.

And once you trust her, you can do without a mirror whilst she is working (so no eye contact either)?

It is often cheaper too.

MidwichCuckoo · 04/09/2024 15:40

I think at my hairdresser they wait to see whether people want to talk, rather than force chit chat on people, so it's ok

PointsSouth · 04/09/2024 15:43

“Do you do that head massage thing?”

“Yes, of course!”

”I’ll pay you not to.”
