To give blood to find out omit I'm anaemic

Phoned my GP on Monday as I'm breathless and exhausted. Suspect I'm anaemic.

Haven't been to GP for about 4 years. Was told on the phone to phone back next week to book an appointment and will be seen in 3-6 weeks.

Am I wrong in giving blood tomorrow to find out if I'm an anaemic? Is the test as accurate as a blood test.

I'm at my wits end. I hate my GP surgery!

This crashing exhaustion is affecting my life.

@SunshineAutumn I see people on here telling you to take Iron Tablets without seeing your GP. Please don't do this. Excess iron can cause other nasty health issues and until you can get your blood levels tested, you have no idea whether you need any or not.

On the other hand, B12 isn't stored in the body - and any excess will be passed out, so very unlikely for too much to cause you any health issues.

But you would need to stop B12 several weeks before a blood test for that as unusable B12 may still be circulating in your blood stream for some time after you stop taking it

Could you call back and ask for an appointment with a nurse instead to get your bloods done? That way when your GP appointment comes around they'll already have your results and you won't need to wait another week or so for that. If the results come back very low it may well trigger an earlier appointment. Despite advice here I wouldn't take an iron supplement until you've had your bloods done. If it comes to that I'd recommend spatone liquid sachets because they are much gentler on the stomach than the tablets.

No this was for ANY appointment! I only wanted to see a nurse or a PA.

Don't get me started on my local surgery!!

Here too there are loads of appointments to give blood, even in the evening.

Think I might just book and pay for B12 injections.

If you think that you are anaemic then giving blood is the worst thing you can do. It’s better to wait the 3 weeks for a blood test , they will do full blood count and check iron levels and B12 levels. Are you bleeding ? Or having chest pain ? If your symptoms are severe then go to a and e.
