Should the care home do tbis?

Went to see a person in a care home at weekend as I often do.
The bedroom.is on the front so you can see the room from the car park.
I noticed the curtains were drawn this was 2.30 pm. I thought it strange and wondered why was she there was she in bed etc?
She was up and in the residents lounge. When we went to the room later it occurred to me that nobody had pulled the curtains back or opened the window etc to.let some air in, so I did both.
My question is should the staff not be pulling the curtains back in the morning?
Do t they go.in, I the morning and pull the curtains backetc?
I thought it odd.
AIBU to call in the afternoon and expect not to find the room.in darkness?

Maybe they meant to go back and do it after getting the resident to the lounge but forgot seeing as how busy they would be, esp in the morning.
Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things unless it was happening every day.

Dodie66 · 03/09/2024 10:58

Was it a hot day? Maybe they drew the curtains and shut the windows to keep the heat out

Dreameeeerrr · 03/09/2024 10:58

They might have, and they might have been closed again. If its not a normal occurance I'd forget about it.

BigAnne · 03/09/2024 10:59

@PassingStranger Was there anything else you found fault with?

Daytimedoser · 03/09/2024 10:59

Care homes are extremely busy. They probably forgot.
If the resident is in the lounge, not the bedroom, does it matter ?

vodkaredbullgirl · 03/09/2024 11:01

Is that all you can complain about?

Danioyellow · 03/09/2024 11:04

Maybe she prefers them closed? One of mine has vivid hallucinations and she always thinks she’s being watched by men, all of her curtains and doors have to be closed. Maybe she got herself up and left her room really early and her room hasn’t been attended to yet? Maybe they kept the curtains drawn to keep the room cool? Maybe someone plain forgot to open them in the morning chaos of getting probably dozens of residents up, washed, dressed, medicated and feed? If that’s the only vaguely negative thing you’ve got to say about the home, I’d say theyre doing very well

Stressfordays · 03/09/2024 11:07

They probably just forgot as they are human! Weekends are always dicey for staffing, someone could have called in sick or they had agency and they were extra busy. Or they could of had an emergency and got called out the room before they had chance. The nit picking drives me insane. We care for multiple people and they all have individual needs that need to be met. The pressure is high and if all you've got to complain about is they've forgotten to open the curtains once, then you need to just let it go. I forget to open my upstairs curtains at home sometimes 🤷

Catza · 03/09/2024 11:09

Really, OP? The room is empty and you think it is of any importance to the care staff to faff about with curtains in an empty room than to look after the residents?

Did it even occur to you that not everyone wants to have curtains or windows open?

qualifiedazure · 03/09/2024 11:12

Opening curtains is last on the list of things to do.
Care homes are always really understaffed.

HeddaGarbled · 03/09/2024 11:13

My mum’s carers pull the curtains for privacy when they change her incontinence pads or if they have to change her clothes for some reason. It’s possible the curtains had been drawn in the morning and then closed again later for some reason. Then in dealing with the waste, laundry, moving the resident, the curtain drawing got missed out.

It really does seem such a trivial thing to fuss about.

Pennyplant19 · 03/09/2024 11:16

My Mums home pull the curtains on warm days to keep the room cooler.
They also may have closed them whilst getting the person ready if the room looks out into the car park?

Humdingerydoo · 03/09/2024 11:16

Yes, I would expect them to pull back curtains and air out the room on a daily basis.

I would assume this was a one-off though and not ask them about it unless you see it again.

lightsandtunnels · 03/09/2024 11:19

If she was lying in bed at 2.30pm with curtains closed then I think that would be different. Perhaps it was sunny/hot so curtains were closed. Perhaps they wanted privacy to get dressed and curtains were left closed.
Bit of a non event really OP.

Sera1989 · 03/09/2024 11:31

If you can see into the room from the car park I assume they are closed for privacy during dressing etc. and if she is not going back to the room until the evening then there is no point opening them. I think the care staff are more focussed on helping residents rather than opening windows

Wingedharpy · 03/09/2024 11:35

Are you my neighbour OP?
She thought I was dead one day last week as it was afternoon and my bedroom blinds were still down!
As others have said, on sunny days I keep the blinds down to block out the sun so my bedroom doesn't get too hot.
Cool room plus warm bed = good night's sleep.
If this was the only "fault" evident on the visit, trust me, they're doing extremely well.

My Mum opens her blinds in her sun room first thing every morning….even if she is going back to bad for a snooze after her first cup of tea….otherwise her neighbour is round knocking on the door to make sure she’s ok

catofglory · 03/09/2024 11:49

This is so trivial that if that is the worst you can say about the care home they are doing a fantastic job.

My mother's curtains are usually drawn back, but sometimes they aren't. I'm sure there is a good reason for it, among the examples given by other posters above.

untiltheend · 03/09/2024 12:42

Having worked in nursing homes if this is the only thing you have to worry about then I’m really happy for your relative! I thought you were going to complain about the hours they got her up or put her to bed ( which are often unreasonable!)
