To hunt down these bastards who exposed my son to chicken pox

User name changed as outing

went on a caravan holiday last week for 5 nights and my son who is 11 played with some kids from other families and had a great time- all good

On the last night one of the smaller boys was running around with no shirt on and he has spots, one of the other families asked and his mum said oh he has chicken pox but we though getting away would do him good.

I told her my son had never had chicken pox and said I bloody hoped my son was not going to come down with them. One of the other parents also said they should not have brought the kid. Basically it ended up with them going inside the caravan in a huff. The next day we all left

So today the day before my son is use to start at high school he woke up covered in spots and now has chicken pox and won’t be in for his first week at high school. Tonight he is now crying saying he won’t name any friends now and he won’t know his way around and no amount of comforting will calm him down. Very few kids for his school are going to this high school and he is so upset he will have missed out on making friends.

We have been in touch with his form tutor who has been great and has said they will support him and catch him up but I could bloody scream. How can some people be so bloody selfish.

Oh, that is bad. I’m so sorry for your son. Some people have no idea. I had to tell someone who is normally v sensible not to bring their baby with chicken pox to a church service recently. I just can’t understand the logic…

Rocksaltrita · 02/09/2024 22:57

Why didn’t you have him vaccinated? Hardly costs anything and standard in many countries.

DiscoinFrisco · 02/09/2024 22:58

That's rubbish. People are selfish. I hope your ds is better soon. He'll be okay at high school...

SoupDragon · 02/09/2024 22:59

I mean, yes it is shit and was irresponsible of them but at least he won't get it during his GCSEs now.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 02/09/2024 22:59

Well it’s a risk isn’t it - should have got the vaccine

TheYearOfSmallThings · 02/09/2024 22:59

That does suck, and I would be crying too in his situation, but he will settle in fine when he does go in. I hope he isn't too unwell with it.

Beezknees · 02/09/2024 23:00

Yes it's selfish of them but you also could have had him vaccinated.

mothsandgoths · 02/09/2024 23:01

At least he's had it now. Will be forgotten about in a months time

fashionqueen0123 · 02/09/2024 23:02

God that’s awful. Why on earth did they let their kid out!

Hugggy · 02/09/2024 23:02

Better to have it now than as an adult. But I agree not good timing. Hope he's not feeling too bad

DoggoQuestions · 02/09/2024 23:02

That really does suck. But reassure your son, friendships are fluid at the beginning of Y7. Missing the first week won't stop him making friends.

But I have to agree with PP. Why did you not get him vaccinated? Especially as older. It's common knowledge that it's a disease that is generally fine when really young, but can be serious if older.

Chocolateorange22 · 02/09/2024 23:03

I think YANBU to be miffed by it. However it's a common childhood virus so you must have expected to come across it at some point surely? Timing sucks a bit but it is what it is. My DD came out in spots on her 4th birthday. Felt a bit down about cancelling her plans but I wouldn't go hunting down the person who gave it to DS two weeks before. We wanted to get our kids vaccinated as have a DH who is vulnerable but were given the incorrect advice by a pharmacist it appeared. Needless to say DH ended up in hospital with it from the kids because somehow he'd never had it before.

The family could have been a bit decent and pre warned you as chickenpox isn't great for unvaccinated pregnant women or vulnerable adults.

Marnieloves · 02/09/2024 23:03

It’s good that he got it now - better than in adulthood when it’s much more serious. No big deal.

WiseBrownOwl · 02/09/2024 23:04

Does no one remember the basically chicken pox parties if the 80's Confused

Got it out the way quick and everyone got it at the same time, win win, if you ask me.

Hohofortherobbers · 02/09/2024 23:04

There are worse times of his life to have it, and he was going to catch it sooner or later.

SeashellCandle · 02/09/2024 23:04

Why wasn't he vaccinated if you feel so strongly about it?

Chicken pox was going around DD's nursery last year so we decided to have her vaccinated. Fortunately she didn't catch it at the time and now it's one thing less to worry about.

OkPedro · 02/09/2024 23:04

Yes op why don't you go back in time and get your son the CP vaccine?! The one that isn't on the immunisation list and costs £££
Some posters on here are unbelievable.

Your poor son and his first week of high school! It's great you've been in touch with his tutor. My son started secondary last week. He came home today saying he's made a couple of friends.. apparently most didn't even talk to each other for the first week.. I'm sure he'll settle in quickly 🤞

MyToesAreHotNotInaSexyWay · 02/09/2024 23:05

They don't usually vaccinate against chicken pox in the UK

Its not ideal but your son will catch up with the friends making in a couple of weeks

Ivehearditbothways · 02/09/2024 23:06

Why didn’t you have him vaccinated? After he got through the early years with never catching it, didn’t you think to just get the vaccine?

So? You pay for it. You can get it at Boots. It’s not expensive and when your kid has never had chicken pox, you get the vaccine to save them this.

You can pay for it. If you feel that strongly about it which OP clearly does, pay for it.

He goes the Vaccine police 🤪

KimKardashiansLostEarring · 02/09/2024 23:07

That’s incredibly shit timing!! Poor kid. Not helpful but if my kids hadn’t had CP by school age I’d have got them vaccinated! All of mine are vaccinated.

Don’t be so mean. The vaccination is £150. That’s not an inconsequential amount of money, especially when you have multiple children.
