Whats the point in eating healthily?

Whenthechipshitthefan · 02/09/2024 22:26

When I've gained 3lbs.
On a bad week when I was eating normally I gained max a 2lb a month. This week I weighed myself and I've gained 3lbs. I've been following Zoe rules, upping my plant intake. Eating nuts when hungry. No crisps. Very limited sugar. Chosing the healthiest option when out, feeling positive about it all.. and gained 3 fucking pounds. Whats the point? Just feel like saying fuck it as I munch my way to obesity.
I wanted to lose 2lbs a week and hit my friends wedding next month looking and feeling great. Now I don't want to shop for a new dress or even go because I'm going to look like a heifer in all the photos for years to come.

Please don't stress yourself over three pounds. It's nothing. Sometimes I put on up to half a stone for no apparent reason, especially around the later half of my cycle.

For context, I've been the same size for most of my adult life. Randomly putting on or losing bits and bobs of weight is completely normal. Please, please don't beat yourself up thinking you haven't tried hard enough.

Justbrowsing2024 · 02/09/2024 22:33

Health. Eating healthily is for long term health.
Keep going and stop being dramatic.
Zoe is all about gut health right? So your body will benefit. Weight fluctuates, it's normal. Keep going and have a great time at your friend's wedding. I am sure you will look great!

bakewellbride · 02/09/2024 22:34

What portion sizes are you eating? Even if it's healthy food you can still eat too much of it. How often are you snacking on nuts? I'm slim and limit that to once a day. What's your drinking like? Wine etc and the calories can all add up.

theorangecounty · 02/09/2024 22:35

If you're doing it properly, you will eventually lose weight. Keep going!! This is for long term health and will make you feel much better mentally and eventually, physical results will inevitably show. You will feel fresher and less sluggish if you keep eating healthy

Grapewrath · 02/09/2024 22:35

You can eat very healthily and still be consuming too many calories.
if you are substituting crisps for nuts, that might be a problem. More nutritious but probably higher in fat and calories.
Are you tracking?

RhaenysRocks · 02/09/2024 22:35

How many nuts? They're a much healthier option than crisps assuming they're not roasted in honey but they are calorific. Healthy eating is not just about the scales. If you want a quick fix crash diet drop all carbs and do a month on steamed chicken, green beans and eggs. Healthy eating is a much wider process about range and variety and portion size.

Nuts are high in calories, have you trued weight watchers? I found it so much easier using the points and letting them do the calculations. Honestly though 3lb is nothing

I'm trying to lose weight. Lost so much after starting back at the gym, but then came to a standstill - there's been no weight loss for at least a month.

However, my GP is adamant that she can see a fat loss in me and that the lack of weight loss is because I'm building muscle.

I find that the NHS weight loss app is good for keeping a check on what I'm eating.

Nuts are high calorie

You likely have digestive issues , I struggled to lose weight and had multiple health issues amd terrible skin issues I decided to give up gluten , got a laxative prescription and started taking probiotics. After 3 weeks the difference was huge and I lost 2 stone in 6 months

Meadowwild · 02/09/2024 22:40

Nuts are shockingly high in calories. 3 walnut halves are 40 calories. A handful of nuts could easily be 300 cals or more. Eat a few of those each day and you will gain.

For snacking I'd go for crudités, slices of melon, berries or just small packets of snacks you actually like - DH bought some lentil chips the other day. About 60 cals a bag, really delicious, a bit of protein in there. They are perfect for when I am hungry and it's a while until dinner.

That sounds like a recipe for yo yo dieting and gaining the weight back on just as quick.

OP you might find that 3lbs is gone tomorrow. Perhaps you ate late or evening meal was bulky etc. It's not necessarily real weight gain. Nuts are always going to be healthier than crisps etc. Make sure you're just eating plain, whole nuts. You can decrease portions when you're on a better routine free from the junk. For now you might need them as a stop gap. Dropping sugar and flour sprted me out and I plenty of nuts etc. as they dont set off cravings for me. Wishing you the best of luck.

IdaClair · 02/09/2024 22:41

Stop weighing yourself. You were happy before.

I have no idea what I weigh and have only ever been weighed at medical appointments and I can’t remember what the numbers were. Wouldn’t be relevant anyway now as the last time was 13 years ago.

Eat nice food and enjoy it and be healthy and don’t weigh yourself.

Haroldwilson · 02/09/2024 22:43

Well, looking nice in a dress is good and all but I'd say avoiding premature death and disease is up there as a benefit of healthy eating too.

Ineedaholidayyyy · 02/09/2024 22:44

You aren't giving it a chance. Losing weight is a process, it takes time and consistency with a calorie deficit, there is no quick fix. It's great that you are making changes to living a healthier lifestyle, please stop weighing yourself every day/ week as weight fluctuates for all sorts of reasons. It will only make you feel disheartened and you'll end up going back to your old ways.

I'd suggest to take body measurements instead and track progress that way, and go off how you feel in your clothes.

PeloMom · 02/09/2024 22:45

When you eat more than you burn, you gain- nuts, avocado etc add up fast. It also be increased water intake, where your cycle’s at etc.

CherryValley5 · 02/09/2024 22:45

3lbs is nothing. Could well be just water weight, a poo.. who knows. Why wouldn’t you want to be healthier in the long term?

Legendairy · 02/09/2024 22:45

Unfortunately what you have described is doesn't controlled enough to lose weight, foods you might consider healthy may have loads of calories in (or you could be eating portions that are too big). Its obviously much better for you than eating crap but to lose weight you have to be properly disciplined IME.

Sunshineandrainbows23 · 02/09/2024 22:48

Well done on improving your diet! Gaining weight on scales doesn't mean you are gaining fat. It could be water weight if you are drinking more water/consuming more fruit and veg which contain lots of water. Whole foods such as fruit and veg weigh a lot so they will weigh a lot while they are working their way through you.

Focus on your clothes and optics, and health not scales. Good food will also make you look more attractive with good skin, nails and hair! Good luck! :)

MiddleClassProblem · 02/09/2024 22:49

of you are following Zoe rules, listen to the Zoe podcast ep on obesity. It has some interesting takes on anyone’s weight.

And a flux like that is nothing. As pp said it could be water weight, it could be to do with your menstrual cycle, you could be backed up more etc.

CherryValley5 · 02/09/2024 22:51

RhaenysRocks · 02/09/2024 22:35

Even in MN terms this is absolutely ridiculous advice. Not sustainable or healthy in the slightest.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/09/2024 22:51

DH and I did Zoe, we found it very useful for resetting our diet to include more veg and pulses, less carbs esp sugar, BUT it's naive to think calories don't matter. So, using nutracheck for that... works well together. The Zoe type foods are more satiating but nuts need weighing!

Whenthechipshitthefan · 02/09/2024 22:55

You're all so wonderful! And I do need to look at the bigger picture. I do feel better. My gut health is so much better. My skin is pretty good.
And the reason I started was to feel better. I was just hoping to lose weight too.
I think because I've been feeling so positive this just felt like a slap in the face. I've been going to the gym (obvs not enough!) And just moving more too.
I guess time will tell and I probably should eat less nuts!
Reset- thanks for giving me a kick up the arse. Keep being positive about diet and food and good health will follow.

Weight control and eating healthily are two differ things.

Weight loss is about working out calories used and eating less over the day, thereby being in a deficit and burning fat to lose weight.

Healthy eating is cutting out processed food, avoiding chemical additives and sugar, and balancing macros, nutrients and vitamins.

If it's weight loss you want, eat less calories than you eat. That doesn't mean go hungry. Veg, quark, yogurts, meat - can all have a low calorie base and leave you full. In fact protein takes a whilst to digest so leaves you feeling full whilst sugar breaks down fast - spikes you - then you feel hunger again quickly.

Eat healthily on a calorie deficit and weight will go over time, even without exercise. Figures are made in the kitchen.

Chocolateorange22 · 02/09/2024 22:56

Are you exercising alongside it?

If so stop weighing yourself and use a tape measure for a better measure of how you are doing.
