  1. Work from home the majority of the time with 1-2 days in the office per month. Office is a 40 minute drive
  1. Earn £7k more than job 1, BUT you have to go to the office twice a week. Some of these office days are to a site with a 45 minute commute, some are a 90 minute commute.

The higher paid job. I’ve driven an hour each way on a six day a week in person job, so I’d go for that, assuming the commuting costs don’t eat up most of the higher salary.

Well this is bollocks. Why is working at home lazier? Utter nonsense.

Stropalotopus83 · 02/09/2024 18:16

I'd work out the cost of the commute in fuel costs etc for the second job as it may be more cost effective to take the first one x

I don’t work from home but this is just such a bold and incorrect statement. I have friends who WFH that are quite stressed and work very hard!

Womblealongwithme · 02/09/2024 18:17

I'd definitely go for the higher paid job, I'd hate to work from home all the time. DH works from home and ends up doing longer hours because the time he would be commuting to and from work, he's working.

username44416 · 02/09/2024 18:17

Which has better opportunities? I'd take that one.

Ignore Gravystain, they’re posting goady crap on lots of threads at the moment.

£7k more with more office days. Without a doubt.

I worked fully remotely during the pandemic and for a year or so after and I now do 3 days in the office and I much much prefer being in the office. I love having the company and chat and do find I'm more productive in the office.

My DH would say the opposite. He works fully remotely apart from maybe one onsite meeting per quarter and he loves it and would hate to back into the office.

coldcallerbaiter · 02/09/2024 18:17

You can easily spend a third of the 7k on the commute costs, so depends on the train or petrol costs etc. wear on car. Train does not run, stranded so need Uber..

Nonsense. I work from home one day a week, we are expected to work from home and productivity is noted. I am far more productive on my wfh day as I'm conscious that it's monitored. When I'm in the office I stop for chats, make a cup of tea and don't worry as I'm "in the office" and therefore it's assumed I'm working. When working from home I'm bashing out the letters so no one thinks I'm slacking.

Dreamcatchergirl · 02/09/2024 18:18

2 but that’s because I drive 45 mins every day to my workplace and haven’t WFH before. I guess if you’re used to being in your home then it might be a big change having to go into an office

whiteroseredrose · 02/09/2024 18:19

Working from home as much as possible. I'd take another cut for no office at all!

Prawncow · 02/09/2024 18:19

Is that an extra £7k after tax? If not what’s the after tax difference. Also, what is the extra as a % of total salary ie is it an extra 20% + or an extra 5%?

Sethera · 02/09/2024 18:20

What are the two salaries? if it's £20k vs £27k that's a very different scenario from £90k - £97k.

Insistence on working in the office for jobs that don't require it is a sign of weak managers who are obsessed with their own egos rather than caring about productivity.

Extra money please. If it's only 2 days a week in the office!

WFH has been fab for 4 years, but tbh I am getting a bit bored seeing no-one now, and am actually going to my office 1 day a week from November. (I work 3 days a week so 2 will be at home obvs.)

sunnshine · 02/09/2024 18:20

Is that £7k more before or after subtracting tax and commuting costs?

LOL RUDE! 😆 I'm not lazy and am very productive working from home. I am just starting to miss the company.

I was kind of hoping for a ‘Would you rather have a lion right outside your front door or know there’s a tarantula somewhere in your house (but not exactly where it is)?’

Pipecleanerrevival · 02/09/2024 18:22

Wfh without a doubt. Those travelling hours are not worth the extra $$$

Although as a pp said it does make a difference whether it’s 20/27k or 90/97k.

Lion outside front door please. That tarantula is probably having millions of hairy legged babies as we speak and I'm not having them running over my face while I'm sleeping. At least the lion can eat the postman if he gets peckish and leave me in peace.

Home working with relatively flexible hours has allowed me to continue working whilst chronically ill. It's been an absolute revelation for my health and I'd take a substantial pay cut to keep these type of terms if I was to move jobs in the future.
I do still go into the office and aim for once a week around particular team meetings where I find in person interaction easier, but there's no pressure if I'm struggling.
