Husbands poor dental care

My husband’s teeth are terrible! He really needs dentures for his top teeth, but how do I go about the discussion? Its a really touchy subject. He doesn’t brush his teeth although not many to brush! Never go to the dentist either! We recently came into some inheritance so money’s not really an issue. Its just the initial “chat”

”Brian, do your teeth ever bother you? I think you need to sort them out. You need to brush them, and you need dentures on the top.”

Surely that does it?

Jjiillkkf · 02/09/2024 16:04

I'm sure he knows...

Catza · 02/09/2024 16:09

If he is never going to brush his teeth it's just a waste of money, surely.

farleysrusks · 02/09/2024 16:17

Doesn't brush his teeth? How can you even bear to be near him?

TMGM · 02/09/2024 16:23

Can’t say my relationship would last long if my husband stopped brushing his teeth - how disgusting for you to have to live with! It might be a sore subject but it sounds like it’s way past the point where you need to be blunt, for both your sakes.

I'm sure he knows...

It's not nice to subject the people you live with, with bad breath, and your partner who you probably kiss, to come in contact with the state of his mouth and teeth.

I know some can't be helped but there is no excuse for poor dental hygiene. It takes 4 minutes out of your day to brush your teeth.

A tooth brush and toothpaste costs about £2 in the pound shop. There is literally no excuse for poor hygiene.

Coconutter24 · 02/09/2024 16:31

I’m not sure I could let anyone who doesn’t brush their teeth anywhere near me 🤢
I would have to just be honest and say he needs to start brushing his teeth because his breath is not very pleasant. Whether he wants dentures or not that is totally up to him but the lack of brushing is disgusting

Lollygaggle · 02/09/2024 19:10

Lack of self care and a dip in hygiene is often one of the indicators of depression.
Perhaps the discussion should be more wide ranging in terms of health in general and what he can do to help feel better about himself.

'I've been thinking about ways we can do important things with the inheritance money, rather than waste it. I wondered how you'd feel about putting some of it towards the dentist? No, not Turkey Teeth, just seeing what they could do here for you. I always loved your smile and it might be nice to have that back again?'

MintyNew · 02/09/2024 19:27

He's your husband, surely no need for 'gentle chats'. Why can't you tell him his teeth are really bad and he needs to do something about it?
Also, his hygiene is disgusting and that needs a home truth. Why tip toe around him?

Normallynumb · 02/09/2024 19:32

Buy him an electric toothbrush and tell him unless he uses it, no dental treatment will help
Personally I wouldn't let someone kiss me
There is a link between poor dental hygiene and heart disease
He knows his teeth are in a bad way.

Depression or not, it's not fair to subject the rest of the household to the foul breath and disgusting habits.

No need to pussyfoot around it, it's grim.

Pussycat22 · 02/09/2024 19:36

I feel sick!!!!

thursdaymurderclub · 02/09/2024 19:40

oh i feel for you! my husband was a nightmare looking after his teeth, they were awful, decayed and his breath stank...

i used to push and push him to brush his teeth, to the point of losing my temper, i told him he's a grown adult, he shouldn't need to be told to brush his teeth.

he was on the waiting list for an NHS dentist for 8 years before we had a little windfall and his teeth were at the top of the list. a private dentist and a couple of grand later, his teeth are by no means perfect but they are better..

but he still has to be told to brush his bloody teeth! i ask him why he paid all that money to make them somewhere near half decent and without taking care of them he might as well have thrown the money out the window!

he has finally got an NHS dentist.. so fingerscrossed moving forwards

It is grim but a surprisingly large number of people (1 in 8 in the U.K.) brush their teeth less than three times a WEEK!

OPs husband will be well aware their teeth are not great and they are doing nothing to help matters . Often there are other health related problems being brushed under the carpet as well and being confrontational is unlikely to unlock a problem that has probably been going on for years and may just end in partner shutting down even more .

Getting their teeth fixed will help but I wonder if there are more things that he needs to open up about that need fixing.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 02/09/2024 19:56

I’m sorry but if he doesn’t brush his teeth how do you stay married? He must stink 😳

Couldyounot · 02/09/2024 19:57

"Husband, your tribute to the late Shane McGowan is touching, but unnecessary. Go to the dentist. Please."

HRCsMumma · 02/09/2024 20:44

@Lollygaggle is that true??? Less than 3 times a WEEK?

Good god! I hate the feeling of furry teeth after a day talking on the phone (work) and drinking fizzy water. Let alone go days without brushing. That's horrific!
